"Our skills and knowledge will live forever, thanks to our mentors, who teach the next generation of Clan cats the way of the warrior. But it took a great leader to see that it was not only the apprentice who gained valuable knowledge from the mentor. Being entrusted with an apprentice teaches the mentor how to lead and gain loyalty and respect. For what is a deputy or leader if not a mentor to the whole Clan?"
Mentors are warriors, deputies, leaders, or medicine cats of a Clan who are assigned to teach apprentices important skills in order to complete their respective training. A mentor is entrusted with the task of ensuring their apprentice learns how to provide for their Clan.[1][2]
"Lionblaze. You will be mentor to Dovepaw. You are a loyal warrior and your battle skills are outstanding. I know that you will pass these qualities on to Dovepaw."
Mentors are entrusted with the position of training young cats to become either warriors or medicine cats. They are expected to teach their apprentices how to hunt and fight, in the case of warriors,[1] and the art of medicine and communicating with StarClan, for medicine cats.[3] Mentoring is an important skillset for the survival of the Clan and is considered a high honor;[4] one of Sunbeam's trials for becoming a ThunderClan warrior was an assessment of her mentoring skillset.[5] An apprentice's poor performance or attitude may reflect poorly on their mentor.[6][7] Mentors are also responsible assigning duties to their apprentice, such as tasking them with cleaning the elders'den or bringing prey to the elders.[8][9] Once an apprentice is ready to become a warrior, their mentor will recommend their assessment to the Clan leader.[10][11]
Mentorship was carried over from the Ancients when they first arrived at the forest territories. The early settlers would teach their young how to hunt and fight,[12][12][13] with supervised sessions from their kin or other adult cats, usually called trainers.[14][15]Riverstar was the first cat to coin the term mentor, having carried the term over from his time with the Cats of the Park.[16] RiverClan was the first to acknowledge this relationship formally as mentor and apprentice.[17] During Featherstar's leadership, a new addition was added to the warrior code requiring that new deputies must mentor at least one apprentice before becoming deputy.[18]
A newly named apprentice is assigned a mentor at their ceremony by their Clan's leader. A leader may choose a mentor based on a multitude of factors, including the cat's loyalty to their Clan,[19] their skill,[20] their seniority within the Clan,[21] or their personality's compatibility with their potential apprentice's.[22][23] However, it does not matter how experienced a warrior is; when a cat is made a warrior, they can then be a mentor at any time.[24] Such as Twigbranch and Finleap becoming mentors despite being warriors for only a short period of time beforehand.[25][24]Oakfur,[26]Stonewing,[27]Wasptail,[27]Sparkpelt,[28]Larksong,[29]Leafshade,[24]Whorlpelt,[30]Snaketooth,[31]Fireheart, and Graystripe are also examples of this.[19] Warriors are sometimes able to choose the kit they would like to mentor, however, are not given the guarantee when they reach six moons of age.[6] A warrior will often watch a kit they hope to mentor, and become familiar with the particular kit.[32]
While most cats will mentor two to three apprentices in their lifetime, there is no set number of apprentices a cat can mentor, with such cats as Rosepetal[33][34][35][36][30] or Tawnypelt[37][38][27][39][24] who have mentored a total of five each. Some warriors may never mentor apprentices throughout their careers; Bluestar reasons that while Runningwind is a loyal warrior, he may not have the patience for mentoring.[19] Clan leaders may also mentor apprentices and it is usually seen as a high honor for the apprentice.[40][41]
Unofficial mentors[]
Unofficial mentors essentially train a cat, albeit not officially by normal standards. Examples include:
Firestar training Brackenfur due to Graystripe constantly leaving camp.[42]
Graystripe teaching Millie fighting skills and how to hunt on their way back to ThunderClan.[43]
↑Sunfall took over Bluepaw's training when Stonepelt retired to the elders' den.[67]
↑Featherwhisker took over Spottedpaw's training when she decided to train as a medicine cat.[72]
↑When Firepaw first came to ThunderClan he was not officially assigned a mentor, so Lionheart and Tigerclaw helped with his training until Bluestar accepted Firepaw as her apprentice.[79]

↑Darkstripe took over Dustpaw's training following Redtail's death.[80]
↑Longtail took over Fernpaw's training when Darkstripe was exiled from ThunderClan.[85]
↑Although unofficial at first, Fireheart essentially finished Brackenpaw's training due to Graystripe's inability because of his constant leaving camp to maintain a relationship with Silverstream.[42]
↑Cinderpaw became a medicine cat apprentice following her accident that left her unable to complete her warrior training.[94]
↑Brackenfur took over Hollypaw's training when she decided to train as a warrior instead of a medicine cat.[100]
↑While not an official medicine cat, she played the part while SkyClan was without one, using what she was taught by Cinderpelt.[106]
↑Thornclaw took over Sootpaw's training following Longtail's blindness.[110]

↑It is unclear which apprentice Rowanberry mentored, though she, Scorchwind, Foxheart, and Crowtail are noted to be chasing after "their" apprentices, Nightpaw, Clawpaw, Blackpaw, Flintpaw, and Fernpaw. Since Foxheart and Crowtail mentor Nightpaw and Clawpaw respectively,[143] Rowanberry is either mentoring Blackpaw, Fernpaw, or Flintpaw. Though notably, a fifth mentor is missing from the list.

↑There are several contradictions regarding Harelight's mentor. In the first editions of A Vision of Shadows, Beetlewhisker is listed as his mentor,[234][242][24] despite being killed in The Last Hope.[243] In an attempt to fix this error, the Finnish version of Darkest Night lists Mallownose as Harelight's mentor,[244] while the Norwegian version of River of Fire instead lists Sneezecloud as his mentor, since Beetlewhisker is not listed at all.[245] However, in the English reprinted versions of A Vision of Shadows, Harelight's mentor is listed as Mallownose in Darkest Night and River of Fire,[246][247] in addition to Spotfur's Rebellion.[241] However, Harelight's mentor changes to Sneezecloud in the reprinted version of The Raging Storm.[248]
