A fat ginger kittypet stands on a stone wall and hiss at patrol of ThunderClancats travelling to the mountains. Foxleap is getting ready to fight them, but Jayfeather stops him, telling that he doesn't have any medicine nearby to treat him after battle. When patrol leaves, the kittypet calls them cowards.
Jagged Lightning mentions that Shy Fawn is carrying Dark Whiskers' kits and asks how she is supposed to raise the kits in the cave. When Furled Bracken plans to leave the mountains, Shy Fawn asks if the father of her kits died for nothing and she cannot travel until her kits are born and strong enough. At the mountains, Shy Fawn goes into labor, and Jay's Wing believes she will have at least three kits. Jay's Wing tells Shy Fawn he believes the first is coming, and the small bundle slides out onto the cave floor. Half Moon cushions the kit and nudges him to his mother and announces it is a tom. Shy Fawn notes that he is black just like his father, Dark Whiskers. She gives birth to three other kits, and Half Moon guides the black kit and his siblings into the curve of her belly. The kits latch to a teat, their high–pitched complaints die away to silence as they start to suckle.

At the mountains, Shy Fawn goes into labor, and Jay's Wing believes she will have at least three kits. The second kit is a little tom, and Jay's Wing traps the kit between his paws and places him beside his black brother. He announces it is another tom and there's another coming right behind the kit. Shy Fawn gives birth to two other kits, and they and the tom begin to squeak and wriggle. The kits latch to a teat, their high–pitched complaints die away to silence as they start to suckle.

When the Tribe attacks an eagle who confronts with rogues, Dovewing spots two intruders – a black tom and Flick – throwing themselves to battle. Their moves are feeble because they're already hurt and exhausted. When eagle flies away with Swoop, black tom stops a patrol to thank hesitantly for help in the fight and gets snarled by Splash.
While sheltering next to a boulder when an eagle attacks the rogues, Dovewing and Foxleap spot a stunned young tortoiseshell cat hurled against a rock, bleeding from one ear.
