When the medicine cats share dreams with StarClan at their half-moon meeting, Jayfeather notices a group of other StarClan cats standing in the shade of trees. The tom finds their scent unfamiliar, and when he tries to scent them properly he finds it completely unrecognizable. The medicine cat questions Firestar, who alongside the other gathered StarClan cats, delivers a new prophecy to the medicine cats.
The WindClan tabby chases after a rabbit on a slope in her territory, belly fur brushing the moor grass and tail streaming behind her. She disappears over a hollow but an abruptly cut-off shriek tells Alderpaw, Sparkpaw, Molewhisker, and Cherryfall that she has caught her rabbit.
At their first Gathering, Cherryfall offers to introduce Sparkpaw and Alderpaw to some cats from the other Clans. Sparkpaw declines her mentor's offer, and Cherryfall leaves the two apprentices and sits beside the tabby she-cat.
Whilst sharing dreams with StarClan, Alderpaw joins Firestar in watching the young cat's warrior ceremony. Alderpaw later has another vision where he sees the SkyClan cats all in distress and amongst them he notices the black-and-white warrior.
Alderpaw, Sparkpaw, Cherryfall, and Molewhisker are stopped by Rain and three of his companions. The black tom is among them, and when they part to let them pass, Alderpaw thinks to himself that all four of the cats could do with a good grooming.

Alderpaw turns to her, who is the closest cat to him, and introduces himself. She eyes him balefully, and Alderpaw is disappointed that they are not more welcoming.
Mistfeather'smate is mentioned, although unnamed, when Mistfeather tells Alderpaw what happened when Darktail took over the gorge, noting that his mate was killed in the battle.
