RiverClan has claimed all fish as theirs and confront any cat that approaches the dried lake. Due to the confrontation, Thornclaw states he is not getting into the middle of that debate. If they go over there, they will just get into a fight with both RiverClan and ShadowClan.

Twolegs

"They’re watching the animals and pointing...something, some Twoleg stuff at them. Maybe the animals are blocking the river because the Twolegs told them to."
— Dovepaw about the Twolegs in The Fourth Apprentice, page 70
Noimage
Description: At least five Twolegs,[5] some of which have hair on their faces[6] and one has huge paws[7]
Rank(s): Twoleg[8]

History

Dovepaw tells ThunderClan there are Twolegs watching the beavers making a dam in a stream that leads to the dried up lake. Mousewhisker sarcastically asks if the Twolegs are sprouting wings and flying too. Dovepaw snaps they are watching the beavers and pointing Twoleg stuff at them. She wonders if the beavers are building the dam because the Twolegs told them so. The Clan doesn’t believe Dovepaw and she asks if they can hear the Twolegs and beavers, not realising she has special powers that allows her to hear and see the Twolegs and beavers when others cannot.

On the journey to find the beavers, Dovepaw detects the Twolegs up ahead. She tells Whitetail she thinks she can scent Twolegs and Whitetail agrees with her. She tells the rest of the patrol the Twolegs are ahead, so the patrol is careful to not be noticed on by them. The patrol sees the Twolegs are in a clearing with several peltdens. One of the Twolegs are sitting outside the entrance of one of the peltdens. Two different Twolegs are looking at something on the ground a few fox-lengths away. Rippletail asks the patrol what they think the Twolegs are doing and if they have anything to do with the beavers. Petalfur guesses they have come to watch the brown creatures. Other Twolegs from the three are gathering around hard black things, muttering and occasionally touching them. Tigerheart points out that some of the Twolegs have fur on their faces. Toadfoot says they looks strange so don’t need to go on about it. Sedgewhisker wonders what they have in their peltdens and goes to investigate the smell of fresh-kill. Petalfur follows and doesn’t notice the Twoleg moving towards her. The Twoleg yowls and bends to scoop up Petalfur in it’s huge paws. Petalfur struggles but the Twoleg firmly holds her, meowing to her in a way that Dovepaw doesn’t believe is hostile. Toadfoot hisses he’ll claw the Twoleg’s ears off but Lionblaze stops him. Petalfur pushes her face into the Twolegs’ face, battering at it’s ear gently. The Twoleg stroked a paw down the warrior’s back. Tigerheart cannot believe the Twoleg is petting Petalfur and cannot wait to tell everyone back at the Clans. The Twoleg puts down Petalfur and makes patting motions with it’s paws, trying to tell her to remain where she is. The Twoleg goes into the pelt-den, unknowingly passing by Sedgewhisker and ducks inside. It reappears a moment later with food and carries it to Petalfur and puts it down in front of her. Petalfur rubs against the Twoleg’s leg before taking their food and dropping it. Toadfoot points out she was being very friendly with the Twoleg and Petalfur asks so, pointing out it got them out of trouble. Sedgewhisker apologises for her actions, saying she did not think the Twolegs would bother them.

Whitetail is worried about the Twolegs already knowing they are there and says that it bad enough without looking for trouble. Woody reassures the patrol, saying the Twolegs are much more interested in the beavers. Toadfoot asks Woody what he knows of the Twolegs and the loner explains the Twolegs have been giving him food for the last few moons. Lionblaze notices his wariness and reassures they have not come to steal food from him or the Twolegs. The cats move well out of the sight of the Twolegs as they continue to talk. Woody offers to take the cats to the beaver dam and warns the Twolegs will be around. He reassures they do not need to worry about them as their only interest is watching the beavers. He adds the Twolegs brought them there. Toadfoot repeats what Woody said, asking why the the Twolegs brought the beavers. Woody doesn’t know but suggests they wanted trees chopped down. Woody leads them around to the opposite end of the stream, explaining the Twolegs don’t go on that side. Lionblaze asks if the beavers sleep at night and Woody notes the Twolegs would know. Toadfoot snaps they cannot ask the Twolegs. Lionblaze adds the Twolegs will be gone at night at least.

When the patrol is about to take apart the beaver dam, Toadfoot asks about the Twolegs. Lionblaze concedes there is nothing they can do about the Twolegs as they do not have enough cats to distract them. They can only hope the Twolegs do not cause any trouble. While they take apart the dam, the Twolegs turn on Twoleg lights. Lionblaze sees them charge down towards the stream, voices raised. One of the Twolegs spots Dovepaw clinging to a branch. The dam collapses and it cuts off the yowls of the Twolegs. The patrol has succeeded, so they return home one of Dovepaw’s and Lionblaze’s Clanmates asking if they had any problems with the Twolegs.

Dovepaw peers out of the riverbank they are in to see the Twolegs, noting they are huge. She stares at them, the fully grown ones are with Twoleg kits. The Twolegs are described as tall and pink, with the only fur being on top of their heads. The adult Twolegs are sitting outside pelt-dens. Lionblaze notes that they are like moving trees. One Twoleg kit spots the Clan patrol and the adult Twolegs jump to their hind legs and race across the clearing. They are trapped by one Twoleg and Rippletail turns around, but the other Twolegs are blocking their way too. The patrol flees, being pursued by the adult Twolegs and the other Twolegs, all yowling. Lionblaze is exhilarated, thinking the stupid Twolegs cannot catch them. A young male Twoleg grabs Petalfur and one full-grown Twoleg bellows at him, causing Petalfur to be dropped. They run again, with all Twolegs pounding towards them. The patrol hides as all the Twolegs keep on baying. Toadfoot blames Dovepaw but Lionblaze points out he lead them straight to the Twolegs. He notes if the Twolegs were not crazy, this wouldn't ave happened. Toadfoot asks how they can finish their quest when they panic over the Twolegs. Tigerheart isn't fazed, saying they showed those Twolegs, calling them dumb. He declares they were frightened of them so asks who cares if they see them again.

The patrol continues their quest with Lionblaze noting Dovepaw's fur is still bristling from their encounter with the Twolegs. He also notes the entire patrol is tired from running from the Twolegs. Lionblaze thinks they have enough delays already because of the Twolegs, anxious to get going.

Rank(s): Dogs[15]

History

When the Clan patrol journeys to the beaver dam, Dovepaw warns Lionblaze she can hear dogs. She points out they are over the stream they are crossing. Lionblaze doesn't detect their scent but knows due to her special powers it does not mean they are not there. He knows they cannot outrun the dogs so he warns the patrol of the incoming danger. They are confused, saying they do not smell the dogs' scent. Rippletail asks Lionblaze how he knows the dogs are near. He pushes the patrol to climb a tree for safety. Sedgewhisker tries to go for an easier tree to climb but Lionblaze insists the dogs will follow her up there. He soon hears the barking of the dogs, faint but growing louder as they get nearer. As they just begin to climb, the dogs are nearly with them. They are loudly barking and plunging into the undergrowth, their smell thickly drifting around the cats, so much so that Lionblaze breaths shallowly as to not taste it. It's noted they climbed that tree because it would ensure the dogs cannot follow and just as Sedgewhisker claws onto a branch, the dogs burst into view. It's noted there are two dogs, they are smooth and shiny. One of them black and the other is yellow. They playfully look around, jumping in and out of the stream and sniff around the roots of the tree the cats are in. Lionblaze notes they aren't hunting them. He calls them 'stupid creatures', remarking they do not have any idea they are there. One of the dogs suddenly catches Lionblaze's and Sedgewhisker's scent. It erupts into a flurry of excitement of barks as it bounds to the tree. It jumps, reaching with it's front paws up the trunk. It's jaw is open, it's tongue hanging out. Sedgewhisker starts to fall and the dog leaps and barks in it's frenzied excitement. Both dogs start leaping up at the tree, snapping at Sedgewhisker's tail as she dangles down. Twolegs yowl and the dogs turn and retreat, casting hesitant looks back at the cats. Only when their sounds due away does the patrol get back on the ground. They are shocked over the dogs though. Lionblaze notes their scent is stale now, and Dovepaw tries to stay awake in case the dogs return as she'll be the first to hear them.

The next morning, Dovepaw recognises the clearing where they ran from the dogs. The patrol goes hunting and Lionblaze warns them the dogs could still be around. Dovepaw checks but cannot find any trace of the dog. She thinks they are probably asleep in their Twoleg's den, referring to them as 'stupid creatures'.

The patrol reaches the stream, but Dovepaw blames herself for the young Twolegs. She believes he should have heard them coming then warn Lionblaze that they were. The warrior calms his apprentice, noting he can still hear the young Twolegs yowling interspersed with thumps as they kick around the boulder. Sedgewhisker watches them, noting the boulder cannot be a rock or their legs would be broken. The boulder goes into the stream and Tigerheart and Sedgewhisker investigate before one of the Twolegs thunders into the long grass. He is yelling to the other Twoleg kits and Lionblaze guesses they are searching for their boulder. The patrol hides, Sedgewhisker's gaze following the Twoleg.
