| "I am you, and you are me. We are two halves. Of course I'm real, and I live in a world few cats can see. But I'm tied to you, Moonpaw. We are part of each other." |
| — Morningkit to Moonpaw in The Elders' Quest, page 184 |
Morningkit,[6] originally only known as Moonpaw's sister,[5] or the voice,[3] is a small, pale orange tabby[7] she-cat[3] with green eyes,[7] and curled ear tufts shaped like crescent moons.[8]
Morningkit is a ghostly kit, formerly of ThunderClan. She was initially born to Thriftear and Bayshine, two warriors, during Bramblestar's time as leader. She, along with her sister, Moonpaw, were named to represent both the daytime and the nighttime. Unforuntely, Morningkit was too weak to survive, and she passed away less than a moon after her birth. This distraught her parents, who mourned for her greatly. She appears after her death to her sister, Moonkit, who originally did not know that she had a sister. Morningkit's existence is a conundrum, and her sister wants to know why she feels haunted by Morningkit. Originally, Morningkit appears to be nothing more than an imaginary friend, wanting to play and have fun with Moonpaw, but her intentions soon turn malicious, greedy, and dangerous as Moonpaw grows up. Her physical appearance is identical to Moonpaw, and it looks like she is a copy of her sister.
While younger, only Moonpaw herself could see or hear Morningkit, but this soon changes as Moonpaw gets older. Morningkit is responsible for the short disappearance of Sunkit, one of ThunderClan's young kits, although many believe Moonpaw is to blame for it instead. Brambleclaw, the former leader of ThunderClan, is able to recognize her and warns her that she does not belong in the world of the living Clan cats and that she needs to move onto StarClan. She is also noticed by Starlingpaw, a SkyClan apprentice, and her presence can be sensed by SkyClan's mediator, Tree, although he is unable to physically see her like Starlingpaw or Brambleclaw can. Morningkit wants Moonpaw all to herself, and constantly distracts the young apprentice from her duties in ThunderClan. Morningkit grows tired of Moonpaw asking her to move on, and lashes out and attacks Moonpaw, showing that despite her ghostly appearance, she can harm living cats if she wants to.

Personality and traits[]
- Morningkit is very intrusive,[9] manipulative,[10] and bossy,[11] despite only being a kit when she died.[11] She has also been described as spiteful, mischievous, and malevolent.[8] Morningkit initially acts harmlessly meddlesome and as an unwanted visitor in Moonpaw's psyche, showing that she can be playful at times,[12][11][8] and that she wants to spend time with Moonpaw and talk to her.[9]
- Morningkit shows up in Moonpaw's thoughts during Gatherings,[13] and training[9][14] and distracts her from being able to pay attention to what is going on around her. This frustrates Moonpaw[13] and those around her, who think that Moonpaw is not paying attention to what she is being taught.[15] This turns troublesome at times, when Morningkit tells Moonpaw not to say anything about her existence. She is very determined to make sure that Moonpaw does not become a medicine cat,[9] even going so far as to taunt her.[14][16]
- Morningkit turns much more malicious as time goes on, going so far as to attack Moonpaw, despite Moonpaw believing that Morningkit could not hurt her. Even after Moonpaw tries to assure Morningkit that she should move onto StarClan and that others will join her as time goes on, Morningkit refuses, not wanting to leave Moonpaw. She is even shown to be jealous, if not spiteful, that Moonpaw gives to live out her life as a Clan cat while Morningkit does not.[17]
Relationships[]
Moonpaw[]
- "I can't see her, but she's always with me."
- ―Moonkit to Thriftear about her voice The Elders' Quest, page 35
- The voice, for the most part, seems to care about Moonpaw and wants what is best for her. She is inquisitive towards Moonpaw, asking questions about what she thinks of Sunbeam, her mentor. However, Moonpaw is annoyed by how much the voice talks and often tries to shut her up by ignoring her.[9] At times, this angers the voice,[11] who then tries everything she can to get her to pay attention to her instead of Moonpaw's own surroundings.[18]
- After the revelation that the voice is actually her deceased sister, the voice seems to understand a little better why Moonpaw was so scared of what was going on. However, they turn to fighting with one another rather quickly, with the voice turning more and more malicious as their exchanges grow. This goes to show that despite understanding why her sister was scared, she is not afraid to threaten Moonpaw.[11] Throughout the book, she appears to gaslight and manipulate Moonpaw into doing what she wants, going so far as to sow seeds of doubt in her about her skills as a potential healer in the Clan.[19][20]
Thriftear and Bayshine[]
- "Jayfeather and Alderheart tried everything they could, and we never left her alone for a single heartbeat. But she couldn't be saved."
- ―Bayshine The Elders' Quest, page 253-254
- After Moonpaw reveals to her parents that she can talk to Morningkit, Bayshine and Thriftear reveal that they know where Morningkit is buried, and the two parents often visit Morningkit and mourn her loss together. They, along with Jayfeather and Alderheart, try their best to keep her alive, but she was not old enough to even open her eyes. Not quite ready to let Morningkit go, Brightheart tells Thriftear and Bayshine where she is buried, and the two cats reveal that once Moonkit was old enough to be left on her own, they would leave and visit Morningkit's grave. They wanted to surround Morningkit with all of the love in the world, and tried to breathe life back into the young kit. However, after a while, they decided to not visit as often and to say a final goodbye to Morningkit, telling Moonpaw that she was the reason her parents were able to find the strength to move forward, even without Morningkit.[21]

Trivia[]
Interesting facts[]
- She has the same tabby pattern and pale ginger coloring as Moonpaw.[7] In addition, her green eyes are the same shade as both Moonpaw and Bayshine.[22]
- She can only be heard or seen by Moonpaw,[3] and Starlingpaw[23] thus leading many to believe that Moonpaw either has an imaginary friend, or that she is not paying attention.[3]
- Morningkit's burial location is not far from the grassy clearing where apprentices have their battle training. Thriftear and Bayshine visit her grave often, keep it clean, and talk to her.[24] Brightheart is the cat who told Bayshine and Thriftear where she was buried.[4]
- Her gravesite is between two alder trees, has goldenrod and primroses blooming, and is surrounded by red and yellow leaves during late leaffall.[4]
- She retains the same physical age as Moonpaw,[25] despite dying as a kit.[4]
