"Her dreams belonged to StarClan now. Every hair in her pelt, every beat of her heart, every breath belonged to them."
— Moth Flight on being a medicine cat in Moth Flight's Vision, page 479

Moth Flight is a graying,[13] snowy[14]-white she-cat with bright green eyes.[15]

Moth Flight was the first medicine cat of WindClan under Windstar's leadership in the forest territories. She was born to Wind Runner and Gorse Fur alongside her siblings, Dust Muzzle, Morning Whisker, and Emberkit on the moor. As she grew, Moth Flight was exiled for a brief time, and she followed a green moth, discovering the Moonstone. Afterwards, Moth Flight became close with SkyClan's medicine cat, Micah, later becoming his mate. Later, Micah died in an accident, and she mourned Micah's death heavily. The medicine cat then stayed briefly in ShadowClan, when she found out at not long after that she was expecting his kits. She gave birth to Blue Whisker, Bubbling Stream, Spider Paw, and Honey Pelt within the following moons.

However, Moth Flight struggled to find balance between motherhood and her medical duties to her Clan as a medicine cat and later decided to give her kits up, splitting them up among each Clan. Thereafter, she established the rule that no medicine cat should have a mate or kits, an addition to the warrior code. After her death, Moth Flight ascended to StarClan and reunited with Micah. She later appeared at Heatherstar's, Tallstar's, and Harestar's nine lives ceremonies. She also took part in judging whether or not Leafpool belonged in StarClan, holding the opinion that she did not, but she was outvoted by others.

Quick Answers

Why did Moth Flight give up her kits? toggle section
After Micah's death, Moth Flight gave birth to their kits: Honey Pelt, Blue Whisker, Bubbling Stream, and Spider Paw. However, Moth Flight struggled with her duties as a medicine cat and motherhood. Recalling Micah's words that she will one day gather the scattered petals of the Blazing Star and realizing how she was distracted caring for her kits, Moth Flight gave up her kits to be raised in the other Clans. As a result, she established the rule that medicine cats should not have mates or kits.

Dawn of the Clans[]

«Wind Runner and Gorse Fur's scatterbrained kit had wandered away from the patrol again and was staring at the sky. The small white she-cat was five moons old, but she was as easily distracted as a kit half her age.»
—Gray Wing observing Moth Flight Path of Stars, page 29
Moth Flight is born to Wind Runner and Gorse Fur alongside Dust Muzzle, Morning Whisker, and Emberkit. However, Emberkit, dies shortly after birth because of a disease, and Morning Whisker later dies from sickness. "The Clans need more than leadership and strength; they need nurture and care. But it must come from within. We can't guide their paws in everything. That is why we have chosen you to be the first medicine cat."

Moth Flight entering StarClan

In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight is lured by a green moth to travel to the Highstones after Wind Runner banishes her for her carelessness. She meets three farm cats named Micah, Cow, and Mouse. Micah and Moth Flight discovered that Micah had dreams of her, and they travel together to the Moonstone, led by the moth the spirit cats sent. Her ancestors greet her, and Half Moon declares her as the first medicine cat, tasking her to recruit the other chosen cats. At the Gathering, the other Clans are highly skeptical about Moth Flight's words until the spirit cats send lightning to strike a tree, and they succeed in fulfilling the prophecy. Moth Flight reveals the chosen cats to be Pebble Heart of ShadowClan, Dappled Pelt of RiverClan, Cloud Spots of ThunderClan, and Micah for SkyClan. After, Moth Flight and Micah travel to the other Clans to exchange knowledge, and the two grow close. When Rocky suffers from redcough, Moth Flight and Micah go to SkyClan's territory to gather tree sap to cure him. Micah volunteers to climb the tree; however, while stopping a fight between Red Claw and Willow Tail, Micah falls from a tree and dies. Moth Flight later gives birth to their kits, Honey Pelt, Bubbling Stream, Spider Paw, and Blue Whisker.
Moth Flight helps mentor Acorn Fur, Micah's successor, and tries in vain to save Clear Sky's son, Tiny Branch. Tensions between WindClan and SkyClan climax when Clear Sky keeps Moth Flight prisoner. The two Clans battle, and Wind Runner is gravely injured due to a broken leg. Moth Flight, again guided by the moth, takes Wind Runner to the Moonstone where she receives her nine lives and is named Windstar. Shortly after, Moth Flight realizes that she cannot be a mother and tend to her Clan simultaneously, deciding to give up her kits to each Clan, bringing the five Clans closer together by the bond of heritage, like the five petals on a star flower. In the manga, Moth Flight reunites with all of her kits in ThunderClan as she helps Blue Whisker give birth, but follows her moth to join StarClan.
"You are young. Wisdom will come with experience. Until then, let my words guide you."
―Mothflight to Heatherstar Tallstar's Revenge, page 5
In Tallstar's Revenge, Moth Flight confronts Heatherstar after her leadership ceremony and warns about a warrior who will leave his Clan in order to understand where his heart truly lies. During Talltail's leadership ceremony, Moth Flight gives him his fourth life for adventure, to take heart his time outside the Clan.
"Leafpool. You had kits even though you were a medicine cat. I know how that feels. I was the Clans' first medicine cat. I gave up my kits and it broke my heart. That's why I made the rule that no future medicine cat should have kits. I wanted to save you all from such pain."
―Moth Flight to Leafpool at her StarClan trial Squirrelflight's Hope, page 344
In Squirrelflight's Hope, Moth Flight is among the StarClan cats gathered to judge Squirrelflight and Leafpool. Moth Flight harshly berates Leafpool for breaking the medicine cat's oath to not have kits, but Leafpool insists that she never regretted her choice.
