"You're right. Clear Sky ordered me to watch [Micah]. But I knew, after the first day, that Micah could be trusted. He cared about his Clanmates right from the start.I enjoyed working with him. And I loved helping. One time, Blossom got a thorn in her paw. It was really deep. Micah had to dig around for ages to get it out. He talked to her the whole time, distracting her with jokes and stories of when he was a farm cat. He showed me that there was more to being a medicine cat than learning herbs. You don't just care about the wound; you must care about the cat. [...] He said that's why StarClan chose you. Because you always knew that better than anyone."

Chapter description[]

Moth Flight dreams of hunting in unfamiliar territory, and imagines bringing a rabbit home to her kits, who are almost old enough to start eating fresh-kill. She has named the kits Bubbling Stream, Spider Paw, Blue Whisker, and Honey Pelt, and she thinks of them fondly. Spider Paw is mentioned to have an extra toe, after which he was named.
Micah appears and Moth Flight is distracted from her hunt. He tells her that he's missed her and wishes he could be there to help raise the kits, though he thinks she's a wonderful mother. Moth Flight is delighted to see him, but furious about his death. Micah tells her that it was his destiny to only cross paths with her for a short time, and that she must walk the path ahead alone. He promises that he will be in her thoughts, her heart, and her dreams, and tells her that someone is coming to visit her, someone she must help. Moth Flight awakens and realizes that the place where she saw Micah was StarClan.
Later, Moth Flight is concerned for Bubbling Stream's safety as Storm Pelt gives her a badger ride. Slate reassures her that the kit will be fine. Blue Whisker is afraid to take a badger ride, and huddles close to Moth Flight. Meanwhile, Spider Paw practices hunting moves with Silver Stripe and Black Ear. Moth Flight is alarmed to lose track of Honey Pelt until she spots him burrowing under the camp wall with White Tail. She worries about her kits getting lost, but is grateful that her Clanmates are always around to help look after them.
Reed Tail reports to Moth Flight that Dew Nose has wrenched her paw in a rabbit hole, and Moth Flight instructs him to treat her with the comfrey from the stores. She recalls how Reed Tail has been helping to treat sick and injured cats around the camp for the past moon, while Moth Flight is constantly looking out for her kits. Slate has told her that she needs to be tougher and not worry so much about the kits when they have a whole Clan to care for them, but Moth Flight still worries.
Wind Runner and Jagged Peak enter the camp, escorting Dappled Pelt and Acorn Fur. Moth Flight asks about what's happening, and Wind Runner accuses them of wandering on the moor. Dappled Pelt and Acorn Fur protest that they were on their way to see Moth Flight. Moth Flight feels resentful of Acorn Fur for taking Micah's place as SkyClan's medicine cat, but puts her feelings aside to advocate for them, as she feels they haven't done anything wrong. Jagged Peak accuses Clear Sky of sending hunting patrols onto SkyClan land, and Wind Runner states that Willow Tail and Jagged Peak found rabbit remains on the border that morning. The argument escalates, and Moth Flight snaps at Wind Runner that this quarrel between warriors has nothing to do with medicine cats. Jagged Peak accuses SkyClan cats of being thieves and liars, and Blue Whisker anxiously asks if Micah was a liar as well. Jagged Peak and Wind Runner are uncomfortable at the kit's involvement in their argument, and resolve to leave it for another time. Moth Flight apologizes to Acorn Fur and Dappled Pelt on her Clanmates' behalf.
After sending Blue Whisker to be watched by Slate, Moth Flight speaks quietly with the visiting medicine cats. Dappled Pelt tells her that her kits are beautiful, and Acorn Fur remarks that they have Micah's spirit. This upsets Moth Flight, who feels jealous and accuses Acorn Fur of spying on Micah. Dappled Pelt begins to tell Moth Flight that she's being unfair, but Acorn Fur interrupts and tells Moth Flight a story of when Blossom got a thorn stuck in her paw and Micah distracted her with stories of his life as a barn cat while he dug it out. Acorn Fur explains that it taught her that being a medicine cat was about caring about cats, not just their wounds. Moth Flight suddenly understands why Micah liked Acorn Fur, and feels guilty for treating her harshly.
Acorn Fur and Dappled Pelt reveal that they have come to Moth Flight to learn all she knows about being a medicine cat. Acorn Fur explains that Micah came to her in a dream and told her to seek Moth Flight's guidance. Moth Flight is worried about her kits and that Wind Runner and Clear Sky will disapprove of the training, but the medicine cats assure Moth Flight that her Clanmates can look after the kits and that Clear Sky and Wind Runner don't need to know.
When Moth Flight returns from a training session with Acorn Fur and Dappled Pelt, she is caught by Wind Runner, and confesses to meeting with them. Wind Runner accuses SkyClan of stealing their prey again, and says that she's been sending hunting patrols over their border. Moth Flight finds the entire conflict ridiculous, and hopes that Acorn Fur may be able to guide Clear Sky to be less cruel. Moth Flight resolves that nothing will stop her from training Acorn Fur if it's what Micah wants.
One afternoon, Moth Flight arrives at the usual meeting spot, but Acorn Fur isn't there. She worries that Clear Sky has found out about the meetings and prevented Acorn Fur from attending. She enters SkyClan territory to search for Acorn Fur, but runs into Sparrow Fur, who knocks her over and warns her that no one can enter the forest without Clear Sky's permission. Moth Flight argues that she needs to continue training Acorn Fur, but Sparrow Fur says that she has to follow Clear Sky's orders, and that if Moth Flight reaches SkyClan's camp, Clear Sky will rip them both to shreds. She says that Clear Sky is angry that WindClan cats have been stealing prey from SkyClan, and that Acorn Fur's SkyClan scent on the moorland is making it impossible to prove that SkyClan hasn't been trespassing. Moth Flight insists that it's essential for medicine cats to be able to travel freely through the territories. Sparrow Fur sends her away, though she seems frustrated to be bound to Clear Sky's orders.
