Chapter description[]

Moth Flight stirs in her sleep, dreaming. She is greeted with the vision of a flame-colored tom, who she recognizes from an earlier dream. Beside him, a brown-and-white tabby she-cat lays still on the grass. Moth Flight takes a moment to wonder if she is dead, as a third cat watches the mists around them. The white she-cat presses closer, knowing that they can't see her and she's only there to watch. She watches as the scene unfolds as more cats appear. She notices a gray-and-white cat appear with droplets in his fur, making her wonder if he's a spirit cat. Moth Flight realizes that she had seen this before as the tabby-and-white she-cat jerks with pain as the tom's nose touches her. She sees a dark gray tom touching the nose of the brown tabby and as she trembles again.
Following him, an older tabby-and-white she-cat appears and Moth Flight wonders if they are related. Her thoughts drift briefly to her own mother, Wind Runner, and how her condition since the battle hasn't improved. As the two tabbies touch noses and the younger stiffens from the pain, Moth Flight watches as the older of the two pulls back and begins lapping her cheeks almost apologetically. The white she-cat realizes they have to be mother and kit as the older cat leaves. This causes the younger tabby to call after her as Moth Flight is filled with grief from the imagery. It affects her so much that she wakes up from her dream, noticing that her den remained cool while the sunlight outside is scorching the clearing.
Beside her, Moth Flight feels her mother's burning body and wonders what she can do. She notes that Wind Runner had been mainly unconscious for the past couple of days thanks to poppy seeds. Moth Flight wonders if she should hold off on giving her mother more in case her body needs to feel the pain in order to fight against it. She feels as though when she and Pebble Heart had set her broken leg, they had done it right. Same with the poultice for the leader's neck wound, which Micah had taught Moth Flight to make. The white she-cat scents the neck wound and is alarmed to smell infection there and is unsure of what to use to treat it instead. She considers going to Pebble Heart from ShadowClan for help, but decides against it. She then thinks about Dappled Pelt from RiverClan, who had been experimenting with the herbs near the river. Moth Flight wonders if she would have something that can help Wind Runner.
Honey Pelt interrupts her thoughts, stating that he and his siblings missed her and wanted to play. Moth Flight feels guilty as she tells him that she needs to look after Wind Runner. The kit leaves without objection, but his tail droops, increasing the white she-cat's guilt. Gorse Fur appears at the den's entrance next, asking after his mate. Moth Flight states that Wind Runner's fever is getting worse and she isn't sure what to do. The news angers Gorse Fur, as he wonders why the Clans can't have a moon without new troubles. Moth Flight tells her father that she's going to RiverClan to see what Dappled Pelt can do, or if she has any suggestions. She gives him some instructions to watch over Wind Runner while she's gone, promising that she would not be too long.
As she leaves camp, her kits approach her, asking to play. Moth Flight tells them that she's heading to RiverClan and that she can't play with them yet, not until Wind Runner has recovered. Slate and Storm Pelt both offer to play with the kits and Moth Flight thanks them, but tells Slate to rest. With that, she leaves WindClan camp and heads towards RiverClan camp. As she crosses the stepping stones, her thoughts drift to Micah and she asks him and StarClan how can she make Wind Runner feel better. On RiverClan territory, she scents fox, but despite her uneasy feeling, continues on. The stench becomes stronger as she ducks into reeds. There, she hears squeals and is shocked to see her kits, Honey Pelt, Bubbling Stream, and Blue Whisker, huddled on a stepping stone in the river. Moth Flight is full of alarm when she sees Spider Paw struggling in the water. She dives in to save him but struggles against the current. She manages to grab him by the scruff and drag him to safety. However, on the shore, he lies motionless as Moth Flight begins to panic.
A distant voice sounds, as Micah reminds her of what Dappled Pelt had done earlier with Drizzle. Moth Flight goes through the motions and soon, Spider Paw coughs up water and regains consciousness. She hurries him up so that they can find his littermates as Moth Flight notices the fox scent is still strong. The white she-cat locates her other kits soon enough, and demands to know why they followed her. Without a good answer, Moth Flight takes them back to WindClan camp as the fox scent remains. Back at the camp, Gorse Fur and Storm Pelt greet her. Gorse Fur warns the kits as they try and defend their actions. Moth Flight, full of irritation, notes that she needs to go back despite the fox, noting that River Ripple would have sent a patrol by now. Before leaving, she asks after Wind Runner and her father states that she's awake and talking, but not making any sense.
Moth Flight leaves and runs into Dappled Pelt on her way. The RiverClan medicine cat states that she'd been worried as she scented the white she-cat and fox earlier. Moth Flight tells her she's fine and explains Wind Runner's condition, stating that she believes the infection from the leader's neck wound is making things more complicated. Dappled Pelt explains that some wounds are too severe for poultices to treat and that she is unsure of what else could be used as treatment. The WindClan medicine cat wonders if Cloud Spots would know of anything. Dappled Pelt is unsure, but thinks it might be up to StarClan to decide. The thought terrifies Moth Flight as she hopes desperately. However, at the edge of her vision, she spots the moth, and knows it wants her to follow it. Dappled Pelt encourages her to do so, and Moth Flight races after it, wondering if it could help save Wind Runner's life.
