"I am Quiet Rain, mother of Gray Wing, Clear Sky, and Jagged Peak. I stayed behind in the mountains when they left the Tribe. But my heart cried out for them every day they were gone. My need was so strong that I spent my final days crossing unknown lands to see them. Only when I was sure they were safe in their new home could I give in to the sickness that made every step heavy with pain." |

Chapter description[]
- Moth Flight listens to the medicine cats' chatter as they wait for the moon to rise and hit the Moonstone with its light. Pebble Heart, Acorn Fur, Dappled Pelt and Cloud Spots discuss the weather and season. Moth Flight reflects on how she had felt after giving away her kits, and had asked after their health when they had been travelling to the Moonstone. The stone now flares, and as it's fierce light fades away, starry StarClan cats are visible.
- Half Moon steps up, and when Moth Flight blurts she had to, the she-cat steadily replies that she had made the right choice. The Healer states that their greatest loyalty must be to StarClan and to their Clan, and that they must promise to never have a mate. Acorn Fur protests that she could, but Quiet Rain comes forward, challenging the she-cat. Quiet Rain continues she was the mother of Gray Wing, Skystar and Jagged Peak, adding that she had spent her last days travelling to meet them before dying. She asks Acorn Fur whether she'd be able to ignore her kits when treating Clanmates.
- Moth Flight tells Acorn Fur that she must make her choice now before it broke her heart, and uses her experience to hammer the message through. Half Moon then tells the toms that they could be fathers when Pebble Heart speaks up, stating a father loved his kits as much as their mother. Gray Wing steps from the ranks of cats, and tells Pebble Heart to promise or step down as a warrior. Half Moon surveys the medicine cats, asking who would suffer when the Clan could no longer depend on them to do what's right for the Clan and save lives. Pebble Heart agrees first, followed by Cloud Spots and Dappled Pelt. Quiet Rain stares at Acorn Fur, asking if she would promise. Acorn Fur shifts around, uncomfortable, but at last decides to do so.
- Moth Flight is relieved, and presses against Acorn Fur, murmuring that tending to her Clanmates would give her joy. She blinks at Half Moon, stating it must always be like this. Half Moon nods, and states that medicine cats must not take mates. Gray Wing agrees, and meows of approval spreads around StarClan's ranks. Micah is watching Moth Flight, affection glittering in his eyes. Moth Flight returns his gaze, sorrowful. From now on, they must never be together, even in dreams. She had sent away her kits to be the best medicine cat she could be. Everything she was - physically and emotionally, every breath she breathed, every beat of her heart - belonged to them now.
