Chapter description[]

Mothwing rolls onto her back in her nest, unable to sleep. Beside her, Hawkfrost sighs, telling her that if she shuts her eyes she would be able to eventually. Blackclaw growls at the two warriors for disturbing the den and Mosspelt adds that as new warriors the pair need to be more sensible. Mothwing apologizes and closes her eyes, telling herself that she is a warrior and can look after herself. However, her thoughts drift to her mother, Sasha, and how the she-cat had left to return her life as a rogue. Mothwing notes that Sasha had offered her and her brother to come with her, and Mothwing would've but, she instead stayed with Hawkfrost who didn't want to leave.
As she settles down again to try and sleep, Mothwing disturbs Hawkfrost and quickly mutters an apology to him and wonders if she could explain to him why it was hard for her to fall asleep. She notes that he had been there when it had happened and why she was afraid to dream. The she-cat soon drifts off and the dream comes as she is unable to stop it. Mothwing dreams of herself as Moth, and her brothers, Hawk, and Tadpole searching for Ken and his Twoleg nest. Tadpole takes charge of the situation, pointing out that Sasha had told them where she used to live and that by finding it, they'll make her happy. Doubtful, Moth shares a look with Hawk and the two follow Tadpole as he takes the lead.
The kits continue their adventure and find themselves in a Twoleg nest. There, they spot a Twoleg kit and Moth asks if Ken had kits and Tadpole tells her that he didn't think so as he was an elder. A noise catches the three kits' attention and they spot an angry female Twoleg glaring at them. The three leave and as they continue through Twolegplace, they become lost. Moth points out that Sasha will be mad at them but Tadpole points out that they are doing a nice thing for their mother. As Hawk goes to say something, he is interrupted by a strange voice and the three siblings are happened upon by three stranger cats. The cats make threats that scare the kits causing them to bolt in fear.
In an effort to hide after making a run for it, Tadpole suggests for them to hide in an old Twoleg nest. Mothwing briefly wakes up as the dream continues, murmuring not to go into the nest, before drifting back into her dream. The younger Moth asks if it is safe to which Hawk tells her it's an adventure as they enter the den. As Hawk enters, he knocks the stick holding the clearstone open away. Tadpole, full of confidence, tells him that they'll figure out to escape when they're ready. As they explore, and it begins raining, water begins pouring into the basement. Hawk tries to open the clearstone from where they entered but is unable to get it opened as the water continues to rise. Tadpole shoves Moth as Hawk manages to grab her and pull her up onto the ledge as Sasha arrives. Moth turns back to grab Tadpole but watches as the rising water washes her brother away.
She wakes up from the dream with a gasp, reaching out for her lost littermate. She once again disturbs Hawkfrost who is initially irritated, but quietly asks her if she's okay. She tells him she's fine and he doesn't push her as he goes back to sleep. Mothwing dwells on the dream and the memories of her mother calling out to Tadpole and not being able to save him. She recalls her decision that she and Hawk had to stick together because they needed each other more than ever and that night, she'd been unable to sleep. She looks over at her sleeping brother in the warriors' den and whispers that they'll always stay together as that was all they had without their mother or Tadpole.
The following morning, Mothwing returns to camp with a fishing patrol and is greeted by Hawkfrost. He makes a remark about the minnow she is carrying, but she tells him Stormfur had caught it, not her. He leads her away to the edge of camp and tells her that they both have to do their best all of the time as not everyone wanted them in RiverClan. Mothwing's thoughts turn to her father and if the Clan found out about that fact, things would be worse for them. Hawkfrost reassures her that he had overheard Leopardstar talking to Mistyfoot about them and that the two cats had faith in them. He also entertains the thought that maybe they could be leader and deputy someday. Mothwing tells him maybe, unable to see herself as anything more than a warrior, but affirms that she would support her brother by being by his side.
