"I was at the Moonpool, just like when I was awake. But it was only me and Leafpool and this StarClan cat from ThunderClan, Spottedleaf. You and Barkface and Littlecloud weren't there. I was looking into the Moonpool, and at first it just reflected stars. But then storm clouds started gathering in the pool. And a cold wind blew so hard it almost blew me away." |

Chapter description[]
- Willowpaw gushes that the Moonpool is beautiful and scary. Mothwing affectionately looks at her apprentice, saying she did well and asks what it felt like to be an medicine cat apprentice. Mothwing had previously worried that her secret might be revealed, but Willowpaw had dreamt of StarClan, and Leafpool had offered to teach her in the parts where Mothwing couldn't. Mothwing wonders if she'd been right telling Leafpool everything, and wants to be able to trust her, and worries that any cat might use her secret against her, since Hawkfrost had. Leafpool had pointed out that he was vulnerable as Mothwing has, since he had made a false sign. Mothwing shivers, and parts with the other medicine cats.
- Willowpaw states she had a dream, and explains that she was by the Moonpool, with Leafpool and Spottedleaf, then a wind blew so hard it almost had blown her away. Mothwing asks what Willowpaw thought it meant, and her apprentice says that there might be trouble for RiverClan. Mothwing says that it could be. When a shadow falls across RiverClan's camp, Willowpaw asks if it is a sign, and Mothwing thinks that she doesn't need a sign to know that trouble was coming.
- The next day, Mothwing drills Willowpaw on the uses of herbs. Mothwing enjoys teaching her apprentice, and passing on what Mudfur has taught her. Mothwing asks what herb the leaf is, and Willowpaw guesses tentatively that it is borage, and it could be used for bringing up milk supply in queens, and bring down fevers. Mothwing is about to ask another question when a commotion outside the thorny tunnel interrupts them.
- Blackclaw states Voletooth has been stung by bees, and the two warriors enter the den. Mothwing can clearly see that Voletooth was injured badly, and assures him that they would take care of him. Mothwing asks Willowpaw what they should use to treat him, and Willowpaw answers that blackberry leaves would help. Voletooth says he must've angered StarClan, and begs Mothwing to tell them that he was sorry. Mothwing doesn't want to promise this, as she doesn't believe in StarClan. Willowpaw stares at her with wide eyes, and Mothwing thinks that she's figured out her secret. Mothwing worries that Willowpaw would reveal her secret, but Willowpaw tells Voletooth that they would tell StarClan. Willowpaw then rushes to find the herbs, and says that they were almost out of blackberry leaves.
- Mothwing states that she would go find the leaves with Blackclaw. Blackclaw nods, and assists Voletooth in lying down into one of the nests. Willowpaw asks if she can go instead, and Mothwing tells her that she would go look for herbs, and Willowpaw would take care of Voletooth. As Willowpaw laps at Voletooth's stings, Mothwing thinks that she would be fine; Willowpaw was a natural, and she had sharp instincts. Mothwing hurries to the camp entrance, Blackclaw following. Hawkfrost's gaze is passing over the cats in camp, and Mothwing jerks her head in greeting. Hawkfrost merely looks at her, and Mothwing shivers, thinking that she didn't know what was in Hawkfrost's head anymore. Mothwing pushes thoughts about Hawkfrost into the back of her head, and hurries on.
