Mothwing pads along the edge of the lake, thinking it is a good day. Mothwing doubts that the Clans will stay at peace and continue to be allies after the battle against the Dark Forest, but decides to enjoy the peace while she can. Mothwing hears a yowl, and drops her catmint to run to the RiverClancamp. Mothwing sees a panicked patrol in the middle of camp and pushes her way through the knot of warriors. She sees her apprentice, Willowshine, hurrying out of the medicine cat den. In the middle of the group, Icewing and Mallownose are supporting Petalfur, who is bleeding badly.
Mothwing orders for them to put her down, and she scans the warrior's wounds, noting how Petalfur has deep and shallow ones. Mallownose explains that a dog did it, and is fearful for his mate's life. Mothwing assures him that Petalfur will be fine, assessing her injuries to see what is most serious. Mothwing asks Willowshine to bring cobwebs. The two medicine cats apply pressure onto the wounds to stop the bleeding, but Petalfur only bleeds more. Petalfur starts gasping and struggling, and Mothwing orders Mallownose to hold her down. Willowshine whispers that StarClan is watching over her.
Blood soaks the cobwebs, and Willowshine desperately says that the she-cat is losing too much blood. Mothwing decides to try horsetail and see if it will stop the bleeding. Mothwing chews the horsetail when the other medicine cat returns, and Willowshine clears away the cobwebs. Mothwing smears the poultice on thickly until the bleeding slows to a trickle.
Petalfur wakes, and Willowshine orders Mothwing and Mallownose to carry her to the medicine cat den. Mistystar and the circle of RiverClan cats who were watching are relieved. Mistystar says thanks to StarClan, and Mothwing is irritated, but lets go of her anger as Petalfur will be healed, and that is what matters most. She thinks that she was right to stay in RiverClan with Hawkfrost and have Mudfur train her, and that she belongs in RiverClan.
