Nettlesplash is a SkyClan warrior under Leafstar's leadership in the gorge and lake territories. He was born as Nettlekit to Waspwhisker and Fallowfern along with his siblings, Plumkit, Creekkit, and Rabbitkit. He became an apprentice named Nettlepaw and a warrior named Nettlesplash. He and several other young cats took Twoleg food from an elderly Twoleg, though Leafstar reminded them that warriors reject the soft life of a kittypet. Nettlesplash later mentored Rileypool and became Mintfur's mate, fathering Gravelkit, Nectarkit, Palekit, and Fringekit. In the aftermath of the battle of the gorge, Nettlesplash and Mintfur became loners because their kits were too young to travel. Darktail and his band of rogues remained in the gorge, but when one, Dragonfly, fell sick, Nettlesplash felt pity and helped nurse her back to health. Moons later, a SkyClan patrol led by Hawkwing found Nettlesplash and his family and they rejoined SkyClan in their new home beside the lake.

Darkest Night

Once SkyClan are settled at the lake, Leafstar sends a patrol to search for their missing Clanmates, including Nettlesplash and his family, who stayed behind near the gorge. Nettlesplash and Mintfur approach when Palepaw and Gravelpaw confront Hawkwing, Violetpaw, Blossomheart, Rabbitleap, and Molewhisker. Nettlesplash gasps if it is really them, and when Blossomheart tells him that he looks well, he returns the compliment. He introduces his and Mintfur's other kits, Fringepaw and Nectarpaw, and asks who Violetpaw is. Hawkwing introduces her as one of his and Pebbleshine's kits. Mintfur asks where Pebbleshine is but Violetpaw explains that she had died. Eager to move on, Nettlesplash asks if they traveled far and invites them to rest and eat in the gorge. They show the patrol the sheltered hollow they have been sleeping in with Fidgetpaw and Nettlesplash explains that they have kept to themselves because trusting other cats is difficult after Darktail. Moreover, he is pleased to hear Darktail is dead and his rogues chased off.

Hawkwing asks that they rejoin SkyClan, and while his kits protest that they are SkyClan, Nettlesplash points out that they are without their leader and deputy and believes it may be best to leave their bad memories behind them. He agrees to show the patrol the Twoleg den where Frecklewish is being held captive the next morning. In the morning, they arrive at a towering Twoleg hive, and Nettlesplash explains that he snuck in once but was unable to find Frecklewish. On another day, heavy rains sweep away the nests in their hollow and they return to attempt to rescue Frecklewish. Nettlesplash doubts that she could climb down in the heavy rains. He leads the cats up the tall oak tree beside the hive and finally spots Frecklewish in a window. Frecklewish's Twoleg allows her to exit and Nettlesplash explains that it's a long jump to the next ledge and scrambles down the tree after Frecklewish lands. Nettlesplash catches her as she jumps for the tree and they race away from a Twoleg.

Nettlesplash shares stories as the cats travel back toward the lake through heavy rains. When they prepare to make camp, Nettlesplash goes hunting with Mintfur, Gravelpaw, Nectarpaw, and Palepaw. When Tree appears, Nettlesplash stalks around him with hostility and doubts if the tom wants to join them. Impatiently, Nettlesplash explains to Fidgetpaw that Tree was brought by Violetpaw's dead friend to join them. After reaching SkyClan's camp, Leafstar touches noses with Nettlesplash and asks if he found Tree at the gorge.

In the bonus scene, Nettlesplash is out hunting and thinking about his young kits. He decides to visit the gorge before returning to his den but comes across a rogue named Dragonfly on the way. She tells him to get off of Darktail's territory and asks if he is a SkyClan cat. Nettlesplash lies in order to keep his kits safe, telling her that he does not know what she is talking about. He informs her that tansy will help her cough, and then quickly leaves. Nettlesplash wants to assist, but decides that the safety of his kits is more important.

Later, Nettlesplash sits and watches his kits play. Palekit and Gravelkit play with a leaf, and Nectarkit sneaks up behind them. Meanwhile, Fringekit is sharing tongues with her mother, Mintfur. The she-kit is shy, but tentatively leaves her mother and inches closer to her littermates. Palekit tackles her, bringing her into the game. Mintfur and Nettlesplash are content, and proud of how much their kits have grown. Suddenly, Nectarkit sits up, commenting that she can hear a strange moaning noise.

Mintfur tells the kits to go inside the den. Nettlesplash goes into the forest and finds Dragonfly, who is very sick. He and Mintfur decide to help her, and she heals in a quarter moon. She shares her catch with the family, and Fringekit snuggles into her side. Nettlesplash is warmed as he watches the rogue lick the kit's head. He and Mintfur invite Dragonfly to live with them permanently, and she tells them that they'll find out her decision in the morning. However, in the night, she returns to Darktail's group.

Later, Nettlesplash plays with his kits, but slumps down, tired. The kits argue over what kind of prey is best, and Fringekit says that she liked the pigeons Dragonfly hunted for them. Moments later, a rabbit runs across the clearing. Nettlesplash realizes that some cat is chasing it, and orders his kits to hide. Darktail and Dragonfly enter the clearing, and Nettlesplash tells them that he is the only one there, having lost Mintfur and his kits after the battle.

As punishment for yowling when the rabbit raced by, Darktail declares that Nettlesplash must catch three pieces of prey for his camp. Dragonfly protests, saying that Nettlesplash has already suffered enough. Darktail agrees, and the two rogues leave. Mintfur and Nettlesplash agree that they must leave. Nettlesplash hopes SkyClan returns soon, as they might not survive on their own with Darktail around. He is content knowing that his kits are safe for now.

The Raging Storm

Nettlesplash pauses his work repairing the elders' den with Bellaleaf to listen to Sandynose's report of ShadowClan sccent within SkyClan's borders, muttering in agreement when Macgyver responds that it cannot be anything good. Later, he bares his teeth at ShadowClan as they push past SkyClan on their way off the Gathering island.

As ShadowClan prepares a night raid on SkyClan's camp, Nettlesplash quickly rises for battle, diving at Snowbird with Sandynose. However, the ShadowClan warrior dodges them as her Clan retreats, and Netttlesplash joins his Clanmates in pursuing the fleeing warriors. He returns to camp having lost sight of ShadowClan. Hawkwing orders him to take a patrol of apprentices to gather materials to repair camp, and he picks Sunnypaw and Nectarpaw. When Leafstar suggests they should just abandon their camp and the lake, Nettlesplash blinks at her with a twitching pelt.

Nettlesplash glances around nervously as SkyClan travel away from the lake, the apprentices urging Leafstar to change her mind. He shelters with SkyClan in a large tree while stranded in the storm, his dismal words frightening Violetshine. After they are rescued, Leafstar sends Nettlesplash and Sandynose to ThunderClan to ask for support against ShadowClan.

The Silent Thaw

Nettlesplash and Plumwillow are on a border patrol with Hawkwing when Dewspring and Rootpaw ask to join them. He marks the border and reminisces with the ThunderClan patrol about prey returning to the forest. Later, Rootpaw spots Nettlesplash and Macgyver selecting prey from the fresh-kill pile.

Veil of Shadows

Nettlesplash and Blossomheart arrive in SkyClan's camp with Bramblestar's impostor in tow and he announces they found Bramblestar near the border wishing to speak to Leafstar.

Nettlekit is a kit of Fallowfern and Waspwhisker, and he and his littermates, Plumkit, Creekkit, and Rabbitkit, are always getting into mischief. Just before Bouncefire, Rockshade, and Tinycloud have their warrior ceremony, Plumkit accidentally pushes him in the river while they are play-fighting. His father, Waspwhisker, jumps in and saves him. Once he gets out of the river he tells Plumkit that he will teach her to push him into the water. Fallowfern rushes over and starts to lick his fur, but he gets away and pounces on Plumkit. He and his four littermates tell Fallowfern that they can't wait to become warriors and that being six moons was forever away. He and his siblings tumble out of the nursery. When Leafstar reprimands some warriors that were speaking out against the daylight-warriors, she says that no cat can blame them for Nettlekit falling into the river.

Nettlekit says that he wanted to train with the apprentices. When Leafstar gives permission for some cats to try out other caves, as dens, Nettlekit says that he wanted to sleep in one. After the battle with the rats he and his littermates are seen running down the trail and climbing on Waspwhisker. Nettlekit is then seen by Leafstar as she sees Fallowfern trying to smooth out Nettlekit's rumpled fur.

Leafstar and Billystorm then offer to take Nettlekit and his littermates out for a while, so Fallowfern can get a rest, Fallowfern agrees and they decide to go to the training area. The kits are shown to be very excited when Billystorm catches a blackbird. When they pretend that they are the warriors in the Twoleg attack, he chooses to be Billystorm, saying that the warrior knows everything about fighting. His siblings retort, saying that Billystorm is a kittypet, and didn't show up at the battle, though Nettlekit refuses to be anyone else until his sister threatens him by saying that he can't play. He then quickly changes his mind to Sparrowpelt. He is then seen saying he wanted to be Billystorm in a game the kits were playing and the kits tell him that Billystorm was not a real warrior, he was a kittypet, and that if he wanted to be Billystorm he could play by himself.

When Echosong tells Leafstar that she needs an apprentice, Leafstar tells her to wait until one of Fallowfern's kits are old enough, but the kits say that they don't want to be a medicine cat. When a Twoleg kit gets trapped upstream from the camp, Fallowfern says that Plumkit and Nettlekit heard strange noises. Nettlekit is then seen saying that he wanted to see Twolegplace. Nettlekit is then seen with his siblings having a fake warrior ceremony. Nettlekit says that he'd rather be a kittypet, and Leafstar worries for a moment, but then she remembers that it was all just a game.

He later complains to the fact that Fallowfern wants the kits to clean out the nursery. When Waspwhisker leaves camp with the rest of the warriors, he is seen telling him that he should not leave, and that he didn't want anything to happen to him. In the comic the end of the book, Nettlepaw, along with his siblings, Creekpaw, Plumpaw, and Rabbitpaw all pass their assessments and receive their warrior names: Nettlesplash, Creekfeather, Plumwillow, and Rabbitleap.

Hawkwing's Journey

When Echosong mentions she had a vision when the fire happened, Nettlesplash asked if the vision predicted the fire then, jumping to his paws. This unsettles the Clan and it takes Sharpclaw to quieten them. However, they still murmur following Nettlesplash's question. When the patrol that was sent to find Firestar's kin returns, Nettlesplash, Rabbitleap and Plumwillow emerge into the open, giving out caterwauls and hurling onto Waspwhisker. After finishing their greetings with their father, Nettlesplash asks where Billystorm is, not realizing the tom was killed by a badger. Leafstar announces the failure of the quest during a Clan meeting but is still determined to fulfill the prophecy. Nettlesplash questions how they would do that and his mate and mother of his four kits, Mintfur, agrees with him.

Nettlesplash is seen as part of the larger patrols, due to the two attacks from raccoons. Hawkwing stops and Nettlesplash, along with the rest of the patrol, vanishes into the undergrowth. After a border patrol is attacked by rogues, Nettlesplash questions how long SkyClan can keep fighting against every threat. After SkyClan is driven out by the rogues, Nettlesplash regroups with the Clan in Ebonyclaw's garden, his mate and kits with him. Sparrowpelt announces since they have daylight-warriors again, they can attack the rogues. Nettlesplash yowls his agreement, growling they'll rip their fur off. Nettlesplash's apprentice, Rileypaw, has his warrior ceremony and Nettlesplash says that he is ready for his warrior name, not waiting for Leafstar to ask him as traditional. The leader dips her head in acknowledgement to the warrior instead. When Leafstar decides for SkyClan to leave, Nettlesplash stands protectively over his mate and kits as he announces they have thought carefully and decided to remain behind. He explains this is because the pair's kits are too small to make the long journey. SkyClan leaves that day, with Nettlesplash, Mintfur and their kits remaining behind as loners.

Sharpclaw mentions that he sent Nettlesplash out on patrol with Waspwhisker, Tinycloud and Sandypaw to check on the fox scent. When Leafstar and Harveymoon go for a walk, they encounter Waspwhisker and Tinycloud looking for Nettlesplash and Sandypaw, who had disappeared when the patrol had split up beyond the border. After some searching, they find the two young cats, and Leafstar asks them what they were doing. Nettlesplash and Sandypaw uneasily reply that they were looking for the fox-scent, but couldn't find it. However, Leafstar detects the scent of food on them and asks them if they had been eating. Sandypaw replies they did, but only ate a little, and Leafstar reminds them that it is against the warrior code to eat before the kits and the elders. She then sends them back to camp, telling them that for a punishment they have to check Lichenfur and change her bedding. Once back at camp, he and Sandypaw clean Lichenfur's and Tangle's fur for ticks.

Later, Rockshade tells Leafstar that the apprentices, Plumwillow and Nettlesplash are missing. However, they promptly return to camp with only a mangled pigeon. Waspwhisker asks what their story is and why they came back with bad fresh-kill, and Nettlesplash, who had been carrying it, insists that they got carried away when they caught it. After a few days, Leafstar spots the young cats heading up the gorge again, and Sharpclaw confronts them. Nettlesplash stammers that they thought they would go on their own dawn patrol. Later, Leafstar overhears Nettlesplash telling Sandypaw that he can't tell Tinycloud about their secret. Leafstar decides to keep a close eye on the young cats from then on.

Nettlesplash embarrassed

Nettlesplash, Birdpaw and Sandypaw later tell Sharpclaw that they are going to cool their paws off in the water. Clovertail is glad that at least Nettlesplash has gotten over his fear of water, as he had never liked it since Plumwillow pushed him in when they were kits. Leafstar decides to follow them, and finds them at a Twoleg nest, being fed by an elderly Twoleg. Leafstar angrily confronts them, and Nettlesplash stammers that the Twoleg is really nice and her food tastes good. Leafstar furiously orders them to go back to the gorge.

When Leafstar and her kits are captured by the Twoleg, Leafstar doesn't want to eat any kittypet food, but thinks that since Birdpaw, Honeypaw, and Nettlesplash ate it for days with no ill effects, she must eat it for her kits. When Leafstar meets Sol, he comforts her that she will be fed, though he is surprised that the other wild cats didn't stay after tasting the food. Leafstar exclaims that they would never stay, as they are warriors like her. After Leafstar and her kits are rescued, Leafstar reminds the apprentices that they must never take food from Twolegs, and Nettlesplash is embarrassed.

Beyond the Code

Nettlesplash and the patrol returning with bountiful prey

When Leafstar and Sharpclaw decide to send the hunting patrols in groups of eight, Patchfoot's patrol return, but with only four cats. He tells Leafstar that it was Sol's idea to divide their hunting patrol into four cats. Fallowfern worries that Nettlesplash and his sister, Plumwillow, could be attacked by foxes or badgers. However, Nettlesplash, Plumwillow, Mintfur and Sol return with enough fresh-kill to keep the Clan fed for days.

Nettlesplash and the patrol stealing prey from foxes

Sharpclaw is unsure about Sol's unexpected hunting skill, so Leafstar volunteers to join Sol and his patrol on another hunting session. When they go very deep into the woods, Leafstar asks what they are doing, and Nettlesplash shows Leafstar a fox den. Leafstar is surprised and exclaims that they must get away from there, but Nettlesplash tells her to wait, reassuring her that it's okay. When Sol gives the order to steal prey from the fox den, Nettlesplash and the others snatch rabbits and run back to the gorge. Later, at the top of the gorge, he and the patrol are scolded by Leafstar and Sharpclaw for potentially leading the foxes to their camp, and Leafstar makes the young warriors promise not to bring this up with the rest of the Clan.
