"Nightheart is my real name. No cat gets to decide what kind of warrior I am. Only I get to decide that."
— Nightheart to Myrtlebloom about his name in Sky, page 33

Nightheart is a night[8]-black tom[1] with flame-colored[10] amber eyes[11] and a nicked ear.[12]

Nightheart is a ThunderClan warrior who has served under Bramblestar's and Squirrelstar's leaderships, briefly a ShadowClan cat under Tigerstar's leadership, in the lake territories. He was originally born in ThunderClan to Sparkpelt and Larksong as Flamekit alongside Finchkit and Flickerkit, the latter of which was stillborn. Flamekit was named after his ancestor Firestar, something he grew to resent. Moments after his birth, Larksong died, and Flamekit and Finchkit were fostered by Sorrelstripe while Sparkpelt recovered from her depression. Flamekit never grew close with his mother as a result. He later became an apprentice named Flamepaw and was mentored by Lilyheart. Flamepaw grew up in a tumultuous time in ThunderClan when Bramblestar was possessed by Ashfur who tore the Clans and the warrior code apart.

Flamepaw struggled from the legacy of his kin and what was expected from him. After failing his warrior assessment twice, Flamepaw received his warrior name of Flameheart, but rejected his name to free himself of Firestar's shadow. Bramblestar instead named him Nightheart which earned him the disapproval of both his Clan and family. Finding himself unhappy with his Clanmates and having growing affection for Sunbeam, Nightheart joined ShadowClan to be with her, hoping to find a fresh start in a new Clan. However, Nightheart realized his heart belonged in ThunderClan, and he and Sunbeam left ShadowClan for ThunderClan under Squirrelstar's new leadership. He journeyed with Frostpaw to the Cats of the Park as her protector, and he later mentored Wafflepelt, who followed during the journey home. Following Splashtail's defeat, he and Sunbeam had a litter of kits: Goldenkit and Shinekit.

The Broken Code

"It would be a good way to prove to your Clanmates that you're more interested in helping them than in wandering off on your own private missions. A mother who's so worried about taking care of her kits would want to set them a good example."
―Bramblestar's impostor to Sparkpelt while threatening Flamepaw The Silent Thaw, page 198
Flamekit is a ThunderClan kit alongside his sister, Finchkit. After the sudden revival of his grandfather Bramblestar, Flamekit was apprenticed as Flamepaw with his grandmother Lilyheart as his mentor. However, his grandfather begins to act strangely, strongly enforcing absolute loyalty to the warrior code. The impostor indirectly threatens Flamepaw to coerce Sparkpelt to obey his orders. Later, Flamepaw's mother and sister are exiled, but they return under Squirrelflight's temporary leadership. ThunderClan and the rest of the Clans continue to suffer under the impostor's reign until the Lights in the Mist defeat him.

A Starless Clan

"I can see ThunderClan for what it is, and I want ThunderClan to see me for who I am. I have great love for this Clan, the Clan of my ancestors, and I want to be the best warrior I can be."
―Nightheart to Squirrelflight about rejoining ThunderClan Shadow, page 269
Resentful and bitter about his mother's distance and the expectations from his Clanmates due to his heritage, Flamepaw fails his warrior assessment twice, much to his ire. After finally passing his assessment, Bramblestar names him Flameheart in honor of Firestar. Furious of the reminder of his legendary kin, he rejects his warrior name, prompting Bramblestar to name him Nightheart. Nightheart's frustration grows when he's still treated like an apprentice, though he gains confidence while journeying to find catmint during a catmint shortage. He grows close with Sunbeam, a ShadowClan warrior. Believing his Clan doesn't respect him, Nightheart abruptly leaves ThunderClan to be with Sunbeam in ShadowClan. However, Nightheart purposefully fails his third trial to become a ShadowClan warrior when he realizes his heart belongs in ThunderClan. To his surprise, Sunbeam follows him.
Shortly after returning to ThunderClan, Nightheart is called by StarClan to join Frostpaw on a journey to the Cats of the Park as her protector. While he laments leaving Sunbeam so soon, Nightheart demonstrates true friendship to Frostpaw, providing her security after moons of turmoil in RiverClan. Nightheart befriends Waffle and Wasp, who eventually travel with them back to the Clans. He becomes Wafflepaw's mentor. Nightheart continues to advocate for his friend Frostpaw, helping her lead Mothwing, Icewing, and Duskfur to escape to ShadowClan. When RiverClan assaults ShadowClan in retaliation, Nightheart leads Mothwing and Duskfur to ThunderClan but gets captured by Fognose and Sneezecloud. His attempts to turn RiverClan's warriors on their heinous leader fail, and Nightheart is nearly killed by Gorseclaw when the other Clans arrive. Following Splashtail's defeat, Nightheart and Sunbeam prepare to start a family.

"Your kits are a blessing. You should enjoy them while you can. They'll be grown before you know it."
―Squirrelflight to Sparkpelt Squirrelflight's Hope, page 399
In Squirrelflight's Hope, Flamekit is born to Sparkpelt and Larksong alongside his littermates, Finchkit and Flickerkit, though Flickerkit and their father die upon his birth. Because of the death of her mate and son, Sparkpelt is unable to take care of her two remaining kits, leaving Daisy, Sorrelstripe, and his grandparents, Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, to look after him and Finchkit. Sparkpelt begins to develop a proper relationship with her kits after Squirrelflight returns from StarClan.

Personality and traits

"So I should think first, instead of just throwing myself into my task. I'm a throwing-myself-into-it sort of cat."
―Nightheart Shadow, page 74
As a young cat, Nightheart was stubborn, irritable,[20] and resentful.[21] He especially despised having Firestar's legacy overshadowing his own individuality.[20][22] He felt that no one else understood his worries and anger.[23][24] Beyond his anger, Nightheart is also resourceful,[25] creative,[22][26] impulsive,[27] earnest, and determined.[28] His time in ShadowClan allowed Nightheart to grow more confident in himself,[29] and as he matured, Nightheart became more resolved and mindful,[30] though his heart still rested with those he cared about.[31][32]

Relationships

Sparkpelt and Finchlight

Sparkpelt: "I'm glad you're here. And...I'm sorry I was so hard on you that you felt you had to leave. I feel I never got it quite right, being your mother."
Nightheart: "It wasn't your fault..."
Sparkpelt: "I wasn't there when you were younger. And I feel guilty for that. I suppose I was hard on you because I was hard on myself. I thought maybe if I pushed you harder...maybe I could make up for all the time I wasn't there. But it didn't work, did it? It only pushed you away."
Nightheart: "I...I only wanted you to see me for who I was. Nightheart, not Flameheart."
Sparkpelt: "I see you, Nightheart."
—Sparkpelt and Nightheart Shadow, page 275
Sparkpelt grew distant from her kits after the deaths of Larksong and Flickerkit, resulting in Sorrelstripe nursing Flamekit and Finchkit.[5][33] During his apprenticeship, Sparkpelt and Finchpaw were exiled by the impostor, leaving Flamepaw behind.[34] Flamepaw resented his mother for leaving him, resulting in a stiff and awkward relationship between the two.[35] However, Sparkpelt missed her son,[21] and she thought being hard on him would help him become stronger.[36] Sparkpelt was deeply offended when Nightheart rejected his name of Flameheart, only furthering Nightheart's anger.[37] Finchlight and Sparkpelt were disappointed when Nightheart left for ShadowClan, and Nightheart interpreted Sparkpelt's absence at the Gathering as a sign that she didn't miss him, despite Finchlight's reassurances.[38] Sunbeam suggested that his kin merely missed him,[39] which Nightheart later realized she was right. Sparkpelt apologized for not being there for Nightheart during his youth and finally saw him as Nightheart.[36] The two reconciled upon his return to ThunderClan, and both Sparkpelt and Finchlight welcomed Sunbeam to ThunderClan.[25]

Sunbeam

"Squirrelstar was right that I had a bad start. And I doubted myself for a long time. But now I feel I'm ready for my paws to walk along this new path—and that's partly because of your belief in me. I know I haven't been here for you as much as you were for me when I was in ShadowClan, but I promise I'm going to make it up to you."
―Nightheart to Sunbeam Wind, page 195
Sunbeam.ASC-4

Sunbeam is Nightheart's mate. Despite their rough start, Nightheart and Sunbeam are always willing to listen to each other

Flamepaw first met Sunbeam at a Gathering when she admonished other apprentices for teasing Flamepaw about failing his assessment.[23] At another Gathering, the two found comfort in listening to each other's worries, and Sunbeam was one of the first to validate Flamepaw's anger.[40] The two grew closer during the journey to find catmint,[41] with the two playfully stealing chicken from a Twoleg carnival.[42] To Nightheart, Sunbeam was the only cat who treated him like a warrior.[43] His decision to leave ThunderClan to be with Sunbeam in ShadowClan was made partly because of his own anger at his former Clan,[44] but also because he did have feelings for Sunbeam. Despite his abrupt decision, Nightheart placed the decision in Sunbeam's paws, content either becoming mates or friends.[45] Sunbeam helped Nightheart become more familiar with ShadowClan's territory in preparation for his own trials.[26] His earnestly and determination won her over,[28] though Nightheart felt guilty when he realized he belonged in ThunderClan.[46] Sunbeam followed him to ThunderClan,[47] though Nightheart felt guilty for leaving so soon for his StarClan-appointed mission with Frostpaw.[48] Upon his return to ThunderClan, he and Sunbeam became mates and planned to have kits eventually.[30][49] Nightheart and Sunbeam are perceptive of each other's feelings, always willing to listen and help each other despite their own worries.[50][32]

Brambleclaw

Bramblestar: "Did Tigerstar send you?"
Nightheart: "No. I'm here as a ThunderClan cat. A former ThunderClan cat. And as your kin, Bramblestar."
Bramblestar: "I'm grateful for what you've said. And I promise you I'll think about it. Maybe you're right. I hope things work out for you in ShadowClan. And with Sunbeam. I've always seen something special in you, Nightheart, and I think you deserve happiness."
—Bramblestar and Nightheart about the former stepping down Shadow, page 238
Nightheart was born during his grandfather Bramblestar's leadership. His grandparents frequently played with him and Finchkit while Sparkpelt was grieving.[51] However, Flamepaw felt distant from his kin during his youth since Bramblestar was possessed by Ashfur, though Flamepaw warmed up to his kin when Bramblestar gave him encouragement for his warrior assessment.[23] Bramblestar offered to watch over his next assessment, though Flamepaw grows disappointed when Squirrelflight comes instead.[27] Bramblestar later ordered Nightheart to ask Sunbeam about Tigerstar's plans in ShadowClan, though not to let Squirrelflight know.[52] Bayshine informed Squirrelflight, who canceled the mission, and Nightheart resented her for interfering.[43] However, Nightheart grew worried for Bramblestar and despite being in ShadowClan, Nightheart went to visit his kin. Nightheart convinced Bramblestar to consider stepping down from leadership due to his mental trauma, which Bramblestar appreciated.[29]

Squirrelstar

"Enough! Nightheart is building a legacy all his own. He has more than earned this honor, and with the bravery and resourcefulness he has shown, I believe that he could teach certain older warriors a thing or two."
―Squirrelstar to Nightheart Wind, page 192
Like Bramblestar, Squirrelflight doted on her grandkits while Sparkpelt was grieving for Larksong and Flickerkit.[51] However, Flamepaw grew to resent Squirrelflight when she disapproved of his second warrior assessment, resulting in Lilyheart failing him.[27] Despite Squirrelflight being hard on him because she knew what he was capable of,[22] Nightheart felt he was being singled out for apprentice duties.[24][43] Nightheart resented Squirrelflight for canceling his mission to spy on ShadowClan as prompted by Bramblestar.[43] After realizing he went so anyway, Squirrelflight reprimanded him, resulting in Nightheart abruptly leaving ThunderClan for ShadowClan.[44] Squirrelflight encouraged Nightheart that he should've communicated with his Clanmates instead of leaving so abruptly.[53] One of Squirrelflight's first decisions as the new leader of ThunderClan was to accept Nightheart back into the Clan.[36] At the end of her ceremony, StarClan gave Squirrelstar a message about Nightheart's important mission.[54] When Squirrelstar decided to not interfere in RiverClan yet, Nightheart understood his leader's decisions despite disagreeing with her.[30] Squirrelstar honored Nightheart's loyalty and appreciation for his Clanmates by appointing him as Wafflepaw's mentor.[32]

Frostdawn

Nightheart: "Aha! That's called teamwork, Frostpaw! ThunderClan style!"
Frostpaw: "Oh, are you ThunderClan this week? Weren't you ShadowClan last week? I keep losing track."
—Nightheart and Frostpaw playing with the park cats Thunder, page 235
Frostdawn is a close friend of Nightheart.[55] Nightheart was chosen by StarClan to accompany Frostpaw on her journey to the Cats of the Park.[56] Frostpaw convinced Nightheart to join her by implying he would become famous by saving the Clans.[57] Nightheart knew that she distrusted him, despite Frostpaw telling him to trust her.[58] Frostpaw begins to open up after he saved her from otters, and she confided with him about the turmoil in RiverClan.[48] Nightheart's faith in Frostpaw provided her with much needed reassurance.[59] When they arrived at the Cats of the Park, Nightheart patiently waited for Frostpaw to figure out what she needed to learn,[60][55] even though he wanted to return to Sunbeam.[61] Nightheart advocated for Frostpaw when she attempted to reveal the truth at the Gathering,[62] and he encouraged Squirrelstar to believe her.[30]

Firestar

"I never asked to be Firestar's kin. I don't feel like Firestar's kin. Every cat says that you look just like him, and maybe Finchlight at least has a bit of orange in her pelt, but I'm an all-black cat!"
―Flamepaw to Sparkpelt about the expectations of his kin River, page 84
As a young cat, Flamepaw resented his kinship with his great-grandfather, Firestar, believing that his Clanmates only saw his legacy instead of Flamepaw himself.[20][22] He felt he was only named Flamepaw because his mother wanted to remind everyone of his kin.[35] When Bramblestar named him Flameheart after Firestar's warrior name Fireheart, he sharply rejected his warrior name. He wanted to be named for himself instead of his legacy, prompting Bramblestar to name him Nightheart to still honor Firestar's qualities within him.[22] Sparkpelt felt that Nightheart rejecting his original name was an insult to Firestar.[37] Eventually, Nightheart felt proud to be kin to the great Firestar.[50][63]

Quotes

«I'm even sort of named after Firestar, Flamepaw thought. Gazing at his black paws, he added to himself, Which is weird, because I'm not at all fire-colored. I guess Firestar was such a great cat, it was more important to Sparkpelt to remind every cat that I'm his kin, instead of looking at what I'm actually like. I wonder if my father would have gone along with it.»
—Flamepaw about his name River, page 9

"I guess I'm sad. And confused. I'm supposed to be this brilliant ThunderClan warrior from a line of important ThunderClan warriors—so why do I feel so out of place? Am I just not a good fit for this Clan? Is that why my mother wasn't here for me when I was a kit cowering in the nursery, worrying about the bad cat who'd taken over the Clan?"
―Flamepaw to Finchlight about the expectations of his kin River, page 140

«Flamepaw gazed at her. No cat in his own Clan had said this to him. They all act like my problems are my own fault. But here was a cat from a different Clan, a cat who really saw him, who knew what he was going through. It feels so great to be understood, but she's a ShadowClan cat, so I might not get to talk to her again.'»
—Flamepaw's thoughts about Sunbeam River, page 211

«Flamepaw wondered when his mother would give him credit for his efforts, instead of pointing to the skills of some long-ago kin he had never even met. The answer seemed to be never. [...] His kin seemed to think they were honoring him, but Flamepaw felt as trapped as a mouse kept prisoner under their claws. Or as if he walked through his days under an enormous shadow—a shadow cast by the great leader Firestar.»
—Flamepaw about Firestar River, page 232

"I think it's better to focus on the present. We ought to care more about what warriors are like now. Maybe that's why I don't fit in here. Maybe I'd do better in another Clan. [...] It might be easier to become a loner. Then I wouldn't have to fit in."
―Nightheart about fitting in Sky, pages 66-67

«Nightheart watched [Sunbeam] go. Traveling had made him feel close to his patrolmates, even Lightleap. But he felt a special sort of kinship with Sunbeam. They'd hunted, eaten, and sat watch together, and shared confidences he'd never shared with his own Clanmates. They were friends now, and he couldn't help hoping it was a friendship that would outlast their return to the lake.»
—Nightheart about Sunbeam Sky, pages 134-135

Nightheart: "Are you happy I came to see you?"
Sunbeam: "Sure. But why are you here? It's dangerous."
Nightheart: "I just wanted to see a friendly face."
Sunbeam: "Are you still having a hard time in ThunderClan?"
Nightheart: "No cat appreciates me there. I don't fit in at all. Even Sparkpelt and Finchlight don't want me around."
Sunbeam: "I'm sure that's not true."
Nightheart: "It feels true. Do you remember when we caught the rabbit on the way to the Twolegplace?"
Sunbeam: "Yes."
Nightheart: "You didn't boss me around or tell me I didn't have enough experience. You were the first cat to treat me like a real warrior."
Sunbeam: "You are a real warrior."
Nightheart: "If only my Clanmates thought so. It's like you're the only cat who really sees me."
Sunbeam: "I know how you feel."
—Nightheart and Sunbeam Sky, pages 282-283

Nightheart: "And you think inter-Clan relationships are fine?"
Sunbeam: "I think they make the Clans stronger. Berryheart is stuck in the past, that's all. She thinks that all cats from outside ShadowClan must be rogues, even if they're warriors. But the Clans have changed since she was young. We're all closer now, and it makes sense for cats to choose who to love and where to raise their kits."
Nightheart: "So if one day I, say, wanted to join ShadowClan...that would be okay with you?"
Sunbeam: "Sure. We need all the strong, young warriors we can get."
—Nightheart to Sunbeam about joining ShadowClan Sky, page 284

Squirrelflight: "Did you go on Bramblestar's mission after all?"
Nightheart: "So what if I did?"
Squirrelflight: "It was dangerous, that's what!"
Nightheart: "I was careful!"
Squirrelflight: "What if you'd been caught? You could've started a war!"
Nightheart: "I'm not mouse-brained!"
Squirrelflight: "Really? Right now you seem to have no more sense than an apprentice!"
Nightheart: "That's all you'll ever let me be. For some reason you hate the idea of me being a warrior. You think I'm only fit to fix nests and pull ticks out of elders' fur. I'm so glad I spent all those moons learning how to hunt and fight, it really helps when I'm doing all the nastiest tasks in camp."
Squirrelflight: "You know full well that ThunderClan has no apprentices right now. Every warrior has to help out, and that includes you."
Nightheart: "Is that why you noticed I was missing tonight? Did you have some important den cleaning for me to do?"
Squirrelflight: "It doesn't matter why we needed you here! You shouldn't have left without permission. You pushed and pushed for your assessment—before you were even ready—because you wanted to be a warrior so badly. But your attitude stinks like crow-food. You'd better improve it soon or—"
Nightheart: "Or what? You'll give me apprentice duties? You don't realize how much I could do for this Clan. You won't give me a chance. Tonight I got the information Bramblestar asked for. Without getting caught. And I get home to this!"
Squirrelflight: "You disobeyed my order! From now on you'll-"
Nightheart: "You can't tell me what to do anymore! I'm not part of ThunderClan!"
—Nightheart to Squirrelflight about his duties and leaving ThunderClan Sky, pages 314-316

Sunbeam: "Nightheart, what in the name of StarClan are you doing? We barely know each other—how can we be mates? I don't know if I want a mate!"
Nightheart: "I'm sorry..."
Sunbeam: "I shouldn't have snapped at you. I'm flattered, sort of. But honestly, Nightheart, couldn't you have told me how you felt, instead of just showing up in my Clan with no warning?"
Nightheart: "I suppose you're right. I admit I rushed it, and I'm really sorry. But I do really like you, Sunbeam, and I want to get to know you better. How could I do that while I was trapped in ThunderClan?"
Sunbeam: "You could still have talked to me first."
Nightheart: "I know. Please forgive me, and give me a chance to prove myself, to you and your Clan."
Sunbeam: "I forgive you, Nightheart. But I need time to think about what I want. What will you do if my answer is no?"
Nightheart: "The choice will be yours. If you really don't want me around, I'll leave. But I hope that if we don't end up being mates, you'll be okay if I stay so we can still be friends and Clanmates."
—Sunbeam and Nightheart after the latter joins ShadowClan Shadow, pages 18-20

Nightheart: "I'm sorry...so sorry. I wish I could have told you. I wanted to, but there was no time—I only realized this morning. And I knew I had to fail this task. If I'd just left, every cat would have said it was because I didn't want to be with you anymore. And I do, Sunbeam, oh, I do. I care about you so much. This is the hardest thing I've ever had to face. But...I need to be in ThunderClan right now. I've had trouble with my kin and my former Clanmates, it's true. But they need me. And I think I've grown enough to finally be the warrior I've always wanted to be. When Dovewing took me to ThunderClan to say good-bye, she said that after a while, going to ThunderClan felt like just visiting any other place, because ShadowClan was home. I've tried hard to get there, but...I can't. Each time I go back, I feel it a little more strongly. ThunderClan is my home. I just wish...I wish I didn't have to leave you to get there."
Sunbeam: "'So you were just playing with me. You came to my Clan and made me care about you, Nightheart. I didn't ask you to do that!"
Nightheart: "I'm so sorry. I never expected to feel this way. I came to ShadowClan because I thought you were the best cat I'd ever met. I still do. But...ThunderClan needs me now, more than they ever have before. And I can't leave my Clan."
Sunbeam: "I don't believe this. All I've heard from you since we met is how ThunderClan misunderstands and disrespects you!"
Nightheart: "That's true. But...I think now I can make them see the warrior that I am, not the warrior that they expect me to be. I plan to stand up for myself more, to speak up when I feel misunderstood. It may not be perfect. But I realize how much I still care for my Clanmates. And I think I have to try."
Sunbeam: "If that's true, then I've nothing more to say. You broke my heart."
—Nightheart to Sunbeam about his decision to return to ThunderClan Shadow, pages 255-257

«He would have liked to stay and hear the story, which he had only ever heard snatches. When he had been a kit, and then an apprentice, he hadn't wanted to hear anything about the cat his whole Clan expected him to live up to. But now that he had achievements of his own, and a place in his Clan, he felt proud to be kin to the great Firestar.»
—Nightheart's thoughts about Firestar's legacy Wind, page 79
