"I am WindClan's leader. My word is the code. You need to decide where your loyalties lie. Because I speak to WindClan. Are you loyal for WindClan, or to ShadowClan?"

Chapter description[]

A half-moon later, Onestar enforces his warriors to rigorously patrol their borders. Crowfeather arrives with Puddleshine, Tigerheart, Scorchfur, and Violetpaw from ShadowClan, though Onestar questions why Violetpaw is with them, having previously joined the Kin. Tigerheart explains that Violetpaw is part of ShadowClan again, however, they come with more pressing news. Several of their Clanmates are ill and StarClan informed Puddleshine of a cure growing on the moor. Suspecting they are up to something, Onestar staunchly declines their request despite Kestrelflight's protests. After the ShadowClan patrol leaves, Kestrelflight questions Onestar in his den about the herbs. Still fearing for his Clan's safety from Darktail and his Kin, Onestar still refuses. Whitetail also presses him about the issue, and although Onestar longs to tell her the truth, he fears she will leave him if she knew the truth about Darktail.
At the Gathering, Onestar grows tired of talks about the prophecy. He yowls that they should be discussing more important matters, such as the ShadowClan patrol who invaded his land. Dovewing argues that it was not an invasion, though WindClan's warriors yowl how ShadowClan has forgotten what it means to be a Clan. However, Leafpool accuses Onestar of denying ShadowClan a valuable herb. At that moment, Crowfrost and ShadowClan arrive, having been late since Rowanstar is ill. Mothwing of RiverClan offers to gather the herb for ShadowClan, but Onestar declines her request. He declares that he will only help ShadowClan after they've driven the rogues away. Later, Onestar discovers Leafpool and Alderpaw in his camp speaking with Kestrelflight. Onestar is outraged that Bramblestar's son is in camp, though Alderpaw explains that ShadowClan has taken Twigpaw hostage in exchange for lungwort. The WindClan again adamantly refuses to help ShadowClan as long as the Kin are staying on their land. Leafpool and Alderpaw leave disappointed. Kestrelflight questions Onestar's decision, but he insists his word is the warrior code. Onestar can feel his Clanmates' respect for him slipping away, but he knows he is doing what he can to keep them safe from Darktail.
