"Did no cat hear some of the accusations that were flung at me during the Gathering? I was called a coward; I was called dishonorable. ShadowClan was too weak to turn away the Kin, so Rowanstar tried to get the other leaders angry at WindClan. I will not stand for that. From now on, WindClan will look after itself, first and foremost." |

Chapter description[]
- Onestar runs through the bushes and into WindClan's camp, not wanting to explain to his Clanmates—especially Whitetail—why they retreated; he enters his den and Harespring soon enters, furious. His deputy demands an explanation, but he cannot say that he never wanted the burdens of leadership or his mistakes to harm others. Onestar evasively replies that leaders must make difficult decisions, and he thinks about how he may have to pay a price higher than just his life—his Clan. Dread and regret fill him as he thinks about the consequences of his choices, and he hopes that some warrior killed Darktail after he fled. Onestar thinks to himself that it is not over, and he will soon no longer be able to escape.
- Onestar leads WindClan to the Gathering, aware of how much more battered the other Clans look. Mistystar, who is severely wounded, furiously asks Onestar why he fled the battle. She continues that Perchwing was killed, and Bramblestar asks him why he retreated. Onestar regrets that he is already in too deep to answer, and he defensively responds that he has his reasons. Rowanstar calls him a coward, and he denies it; trying to cover up his wrongdoing, he snarls that ShadowClan cats protected their former Clanmates instead of fighting. The clearing bursts into argument, and Onestar despairingly realizes that Darktail cannot be defeated without WindClan. Clouds drift over the moon, and the Gathering disbands while Onestar thinks about the possibility of him going to the Dark Forest. He realizes that his mistakes may cost him everything, and he does not know how to stop it. They return to WindClan, and he tells Kestrelflight that WindClan's borders will be closed to all outsiders. The Clan looks shocked and unhappy, but he knows he can only act angry to convince them he is right. He hisses that he was unfairly accused during the Gathering, and WindClan will only look after itself.
