"I can't. I don't think I'm supposed to be leader. I just want to be an ordinary RiverClan warrior. I'm not going to the Moonpool."
— Owlnose stepping down as appointed leader in Sky, page 255

Owlnose is a thick-furred[4] brown tabby tom[1] with broad shoulders and glossy fur.[4]

Owlnose is a RiverClan warrior who has served under Mistystar's, Tigerstar's, Duskfur's, and Splashtail's leaderships in the lake territories. He was born to Mallownose and Petalfur alongside Brackenpelt and Jayclaw. As a warrior, Owlnose was outspoken but always had RiverClan's interests in mind. However, after he was chosen by Frostpaw to be RiverClan's newest leader following Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's mysterious deaths, Owlnose's indecisiveness created conflict in the Clan. He did not attempt to receive nine lives from StarClan but appeared before the other Clans as Owlstar, maintaining the ruse only momentarily. Owlnose stepped down from leadership and RiverClan's apparent weakness prompted Tigerstar to take matters into his own paws, establishing ShadowClan presence in RiverClan.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

He is now a warrior named Owlnose.

Shattered Sky[]

Violetpaw encounters Owlnose during the fight between the Kin and RiverClan. She bursts through the undergrowth and comes face to face with him, aiming a blow at his ears. He ducks, causing her claws to miss him, then rises on his paws in an attempt to get her ears with both his forepaws. Violetpaw hurtles forward at his exposed belly, raking her claws across it and causing him to back off with his jaws gaping in a gasp of pain.

Darkest Night[]

Owlnose: "What is Mosspelt supposed to eat?"
Cloudtail: "There's more than enough left for Mosspelt. I don't know why you're making a fuss."
Owlnose: "Have you forgotten the warrior code? The weakest cats eat first. Why do your elders eat while ours goes hungry?"
—Owlnose arguing about prey Darkest Night, page 14
When RiverClan shelters in ThunderClan's camp, Owlnose argues with Cloudtail about Mosspelt not getting prey. Cloudtail responds that there is more than enough for her and that he doesn't understand the problem. Glaring, Owlnose asks if he has forgotten the warrior code, demanding to know why ThunderClan's elders get to eat before RiverClan's. Graystripe explains that Mosspelt had been asleep and Millie offers to share her prey with Mosspelt. Lakeheart and Brackenpelt side with Owlnose as he argues with Molewhisker, but Mistystar arrives to end their bickering.

River of Fire[]

Jayclaw asks Willowshine for herbs after his fight with Owlnose, explaining that Owlnose had ruined his nest by standing on it. Willowshine rolls her eyes and asks if they're kits, to which Jayclaw apologizes. While she's retrieving the herbs, Willowshine wonders what could've made the brothers fight over something so trivial since they're both reasonable toms. Willowshine tells Mothwing about the conflict, who complains that they already have enough trouble, and Willowshine supposes she had better talk to Owlnose.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

"Yeah, this is what happens when your medicine cat can't speak to StarClan. You have to rely on a half-trained apprentice!"
―Owlnose about Frostpaw River (book), page 67
Owlnose and other cats argue with Mistystar about changes being made to the warrior code, with Owlnose worrying that they might weaken RiverClan. Mistystar questions if Owlnose knows more than StarClan, but she abruptly falls over and dies. Owlnose questions Frostpaw's capabilities to speak with StarClan to assess the situation, and with Reedwhisker missing, Mothwing orders Owlnose on a patrol to search for him, but to not inform the other Clans. Owlnose believes the Clan needs to adapt when they have no leadership, and later seeks Mothwing's opinion when Frostpaw believes that Curlfeather should be leader.

Sky[]

«She was wondering if she'd made the right decision after all. Look beyond the obvious choices. Was that the only reason she'd chosen Owlnose? Because he seemed the least likely choice? Was that really what was best for RiverClan? What had made her so sure that he was the cat StarClan had wanted her to pick.»
—Frostpaw about Owlnose's leadership Sky (book), pages 151-152
Frostpaw picks Owlnose as leader as he fits her dream's description of a cat beyond the obvious choices. Owlnose is shocked, and while the rest of the Clan is initially uncertain, some believe he's a good choice. Frostpaw announces that she'll take Owlnose to the Moonpool the next night to receive his nine lives and Mothwing prompts Owlnose to organize patrols in the meantime. However, he has difficulty doing so, and his confidence withers further when Brackenpelt and Podlight are injured by a collapsing riverbank. Owlnose's uncertainty spreads quickly through the Clan and Duskfur presses Frostpaw on how she came to pick Owlnose.
On the way to the Moonpool, Owlnose questions Frostpaw about the ceremony. His hesitancy compels Frostpaw to attempt to speak with StarClan first. However, StarClan doesn't appear, and they remain silent when Owlnose attempts to communicate with them. Their Clanmates welcome him back as Owlstar, but Frostpaw breaks the news that StarClan didn't appear. The Clan surmises that StarClan wants Owlnose to lead for a while first, and his selection of Splashtail as deputy is met with harsh criticism. However, Tawnypelt from ShadowClan interrupts them with news of an emergency Gathering that night. Owlnose is criticized for sitting in the Great Oak until Mothwing reveals to the other Clans that Mistystar and Reedwhisker have died. Owlnose pretends that he is Owlstar, though his ruse fades when the other leaders question him. Owlnose admits that Reedwhisker died before receiving his nine lives and that he doesn't have nine lives either, but pretends that Mistystar died of greencough. Tigerstar suggests that he should lead RiverClan in the meantime; however, Leafstar insists on Fidgetflake taking Owlnose to the Moonpool to receive his nine lives.
While Splashtail's decisiveness balances out Owlnose's own uncertainty, they still struggle to organize patrols without Mothwing's help. Mothwing, Fidgetflake, and Frostpaw guide Owlnose to the Moonpool that night, but as they are nearly at the Moonpool, Owlnose announces that he's stepping down. Fidgetflake decides to inform the other medicine cats in hopes they can help solve RiverClan's problem. However, Tigerstar arrives to establish ShadowClan's presence in RiverClan, and as tensions rise, Owlnose is uncertain what to do. A battle breaks out and Owlnose is driven off by Berryheart. With Tigerstar in control, he orders Owlnose to check his Clanmates' injuries.

Shadow[]

Duskfur: "This is all your fault. If you had done your duty at the Moonpool, we would have a leader by now, and we could tell Tigerstar and his mange-ridden warriors to get their tails off our territory."
Icewing: "That's not fair. Sure, we need a leader, but we don't want one who knows in his heart that it's wrong for him to lead. Owlnose has done something very brave and good for the Clan by choosing to step down."
—Duskfur and Icewing about Owlnose's choice Shadow, page 9
After the battle, several RiverClan warriors confront Owlnose for his decision to step down from leadership, though Icewing and Tigerstar defend his choice and honesty. At the emergency Gathering, Tigerstar announces that Owlnose did not become RiverClan's leader, which causes an outcry. Owlnose is ashamed by the negative attention, but Icewing comforts him. When Frostpaw decides to train as a regular apprentice, Owlnose and Nightsky offer to mentor her. Some of Owlnose's Clanmates still resent him for stepping down, especially with ShadowClan's presence in their camp, and Lizardtail attacks Owlnose when the two argue who should repair the warriors' den. While debating who might've killed Reedwhisker, Frostpaw briefly thinks about Owlnose before realizing he definitely has no ambition for leadership.

Thunder[]

When Nightheart returns from the Moonpool, Sparkpelt asks if he has seen Frostpaw, mentioning that Owlnose and Splashtail came to ThunderClan at dawn looking for her. Whistlepaw recalls this same search party as having visited WindClan to Frostpaw while she cares for her injuries in secret. Neither Clan provided any knowledge of Frostpaw's location.
During a Gathering, Sunbeam spots Owlnose sitting near Lizardtail as both toms stare into the water as if looking for fish.

Wind[]

Ivypool mentions that Owlnose, a terrible liar, had nearly lied about receiving nine lives when ThunderClan discuss the possibility of Splashtail doing so.

In the Super Editions[]

Bramblestar's Storm[]

Although unnamed, he is mentioned at a Gathering by Mistystar as one of Petalfur and Mallownose's new kits.

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

Finleap reports that Owlnose and Havenpelt had accompanied Mistystar to ThunderClan's camp. Mistystar and Tigerstar challenge Bramblestar about their border issues with Harestar before Mistystar beckons her warriors away.

Personality[]

Owlnose is a short-tempered cat who is quick to argue both with other Clans[9] and his Clanmates,[10] having twice gotten in physical fights.[11][12] His Clanmates consider him sensible[11] but resent his indecisiveness.[13] Still, he is fiercely defensive of RiverClan[10] and bravely values honesty over his own pride.[14] His brief stint of leadership demonstrated his inabilities to make clear decisions that involve the safety of his Clanmates, becoming too concerned with their well-being to potentially put them in harm's way.[13][15]

Relationships[]

Jayclaw and Frostpaw[]

Jayclaw is Owlnose's littermate, but the two fought violently with each other when Owlnose accidentally crushed Jayclaw's nest.[11] Moreover, Owlnose showed no compassion for Jayclaw's orphaned daughter, Frostpaw, calling her a half-trained apprentice when RiverClan are forced to rely on her for StarClan's guidance.[10] However, Owlnose worked with Frostpaw after she chose him to be leader even though he subsequently stepped down. Later, Owlnose offered to train Frostpaw when she decided to train as a warrior.[16]

Splashtail[]

Owlnose picks Splashtail as his deputy despite him not having been a mentor, defending his choice by reasoning that he would work well with him.[17] Splashtail defends Owlnose as just needing time to become a great leader,[15] although his genuineness is unclear given his own desire for RiverClan's leadership.

Quotes[]

"And if the Clans make these changes for ThunderClan, they might endanger RiverClan sometime in the future. What's to stop one Clan deposing another Clan's leader, to grab power?"
―Owlnose arguing with Mistystar about code changes River, page 60

«The brown tabby tom stiffened. He was the right choice, wasn't he? His shoulders were broad, and muscle showed underneath his thick, glossy pelt. He'd been her father's littermate and was a strong fighter and good hunter, just like Jayclaw. And if he flared into anger from time to time, that was good, wasn't it? It meant he'd fight for his Clan.»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about choosing Owlnose as leader Sky (book), page 141

"I don't have my nine lives. Neither did Reedwhisker. There wasn't time. But I am RiverClan's leader. It's just that when I went to the Moonpool, StarClan didn't share with me."
―Owlnose at the Gathering Sky (book), page 216
