Chapter description[]

Slate asks Gray Wing if he should be out here, and he watches Wind Runner, Gorse Fur and Dust Muzzle trying to catch the scent of prey. Gray Wing’s gaze flicks to Dust Muzzle, who dives down a burrow. A rabbit hops out of another burrow and Wind Runner goes towards it, but Gorse Fur blocks her way as Dust Muzzle shoots up from the hole, and pounces on the rabbit. Gray Wing praises the young tom, and Wind Runner tells him to put it in the tuft of grass. Gorse Fur stares downslope, asking if anyone heard the grouse. Wind Runner takes a look and orders Gray Wing to drive it towards them for them to kill, much to Gray Wing’s annoyance. Gray Wing moves forwards and gains speed, and the grouse seems unaware of him. He decides to catch it despite Wind Runner’s orders; however, Gray Wing lands clumsily on it, and the grouse ends up flying away. Gray Wing hears yowls behind him, seeing eight rogues.
An orange she-cat leaps at Gray Wing and attempts to choke him, and he tries to push her off. He feels his fur rip off as the rogue tries to cling onto him. The orange tabby’s gaze is aimed at Gray Wing’s shoulder and realizes she is trying to lame him, casting his memory on what Star Flower had taught the groups. Quickly, Gray Wing stops her move and surprises her. Slate fights an orange tom and a tortoiseshell she-cat while Dust Muzzle struggles against a black tom. Slash tells Splinter to go for Wind Runner’s throat, as the others would surrender if Wind Runner is dead. Gray Wing runs to help but Gorse Fur reaches there before him, pushing Splinter. Wind Runner claws Splinter’s flank and quickly withdraws and in anger, Splinter chases her, but Gorse Fur follows suit.
Gray Wing dives into the fight, feeling Slate beside him. He hears Slash tell Beetle to lame Gray Wing’s legs, but the dark gray tom dodges in time. Wind Runner appears and pulls a rogue off Dust Muzzle. Gorse Fur announces that Splinter is gone, and Gray Wing feels a tortoiseshell she-cat bit down on his leg. He sees Reed, Spotted Fur, Minnow and Moth Flight appear from the heather and plunge into the fight. Gray Wing digs into Slash’s pelt and the rogue leader bits into his neck, causing the gray tom to have issues breathing. Suddenly, Slash’s weight disappears and Gray Wing panics, wondering if he is dying, and Slate calls out to him. Moth Flight asks if Gray Wing is ok and Slate comforts Gray Wing. The dark gray tom thanks Slate, wheezing and the she-cat tells him she isn’t going to let anything happen to the father of his kits. Shock pulses through Gray Wing, and Slate reveals she’s expecting his kits.
