Chapter description[]
- Gray Wing is dreaming about the forest, until suddenly shadows caved in. Then he saw StarClan cats, his old campmates appearing in starry figures. He demands to know who they are but is woken up abruptly by Slate’s cries, and she informs him their kits are coming. Gray Wing calls for Reed, who is still asleep, and Minnow goes to fetch Wind Runner. He remembers Turtle Tail’s kits and is deeply concerned if Slate will have a safe kitting.
- Reed and Wind Runner comfort Slate, and Reed tells Gray Wing to wait in the clearing to ease his anxiety. Fern approaches him and asks about the kits. He notices that Fern is way happier than she was previously, and that she is more plump and well-fed. She talks about how much better the living conditions are here than in Slash’s camp.
- Spotted Fur mentions that Bee needs to be taught how to hunt but is interrupted by Wind Runner announcing the arrival of Gray Wing and Slate’s kits. Gray Wing and Slate rejoice over their newborn kits, while Reed and Wind Runner leave the den. Later, Gray Wing is notified that Jagged Peak and Tall Shadow have arrived to visit the kits. The three of them chat a little, and Jagged Peak and Gray Wing reminisce about mountain life and Quiet Rain. While talking, Gray Wing has an asthma attack, but right afterward, Reed howls that Fern is injured and needs help.
