“I’m punishing no one. Star Flower chose you, and I respect her decision. I’m sorry she’s in trouble, and I’d help if I could, but I can’t let my campmates starve to save her. You must solve this problem yourself.” |

Chapter description[]
- Thunder and Lightning Tail hunt and the orange tom crouches, springing at a mouse. They share concerns about leaf-bare prey, and Thunder thinks about Quiet Rain’s burial, and then his present, as the leader of his group. Lightning Tail tries to stalk a blackbird, but frightened, it flies away. Thunder sees a thrush on the rocks and crouches, keeping his eye on the thrush, but Lightning Tail gets there before him, killing the prey. They go back to camp and Thistle and Clover are excited to eat it, but Milkweed tells them to not be so eager to eat the prey. Pink Eyes allows them to eat the thrush, while old cat takes the mouse. Owl Eyes, Cloud Spots and Leaf go on another hunting patrol, with Owl Eyes leading it.
- Owl Eyes recommends looking through the ravine for any possible signs of prey, but Thistle tells him he has already check it, and nothing was to be found. Thistle and Clover argue, but Thunder promises to let both of them explore the forest, to which Milkweed is grateful for. Milkweed offers to make Pink Eyes a new nest, but he declines, snapping that he can do that himself. She starts collecting bracken anyways. Lightning Tail tells the kits about how he caught the thrush. Thunder wonders if he can protect his group enough, worried that his cats might go back to Clear Sky's group. He promises that he will be there for him, and Thistle and Clover exclaim that they can smell Owl Eyes.
- Owl Eyes bursts into camp, announcing that Clear Sky and his patrol of Sparrow Fur, Alder and Acorn Fur are here. Lightning Tail is extremely wary and doubtful of Clear Sky, and Thunder tells him to try avoid arguments and fights. Clear Sky tells Thunder that Slash has Star Flower abducted, and seeing Thistle and Clover share tongues with Acorn Fur, he growls they should be of some use, irritating Thunder. Thunder tells Clear Sky prey is already scarce, and he can’t risk any to the rogues, and his campmates agree. Clear Sky begs just to meet Slash and the rogues, but Thunder and his campmates refuse to, as he can’t sacrifice them to Star Flower. Clear Sky is angered and his campmates try to comfort him, before they leave. Thunder wonders if he has made the right decision, and thinks about the consequences.
