Chapter description[]
- Pebble Heart urges Thunder to go looking for Black Ear as he can take care of Gray Wing, and Owl Eyes tells him he can see a trail. They try to figure out how Black Ear was stolen and Thunder realizes that Swallow must have been the one who took the kit, as she wasn't at the meeting. Sparrow Fur mews they can't be far from them and Thunder leads them across the tracks. He smells Slash’s scent, and they go inside a cave. Sparrow Fur tells Thunder and Owl Eyes she can detect Black Ear's scent, and to the ginger tom's relief, there is no blood scent. However, Thunder scents a fox that corners them inside from the entrance, and he panics but quickly figures out a plan. He tells Owl Eyes and Sparrow Fur that he will lead the fox away, and then they run. He slashes at the fox’s muzzle and Owl Eyes and Sparrow Fur leap past and fight it, and Thunder realizes the fox is planning to kill him.
- However, he sees gray fur leap across and slams into the fox, and Thunder realizes it is Clear Sky. Together, the four battle the fox, driving it away. When Thunder asks why he is here, Clear Sky tells his son when he went back to camp finding Star Flower safe, he assumed that Slash attacked Gray Wing's camp. Thunder informs Clear Sky that Black Ear has been taken by Slash’s rogues, and they continue following the trail. Clear Sky realizes the rogues are heading into the pines, and Thunder believes they must cross the Thunderpath, but Sparrow Fur offers an alternative for the rogues, and what they can do.
- Thunder sees a monster about to zoom by and the rogues near the Thunderpath, with Black Ear in Swallow's jaws. He cries out to the black-and-white kit and Slash circles his rogues, glaring at the orange tom. Sparrow Fur mews to not attack here near the Thunderpath, and Owl Eyes suggests attacking after they cross. Clear Sky warns them there is no snow in the pines, so their scent can easily become stale. The gray tom decides that after the monster passes they should attack. Slash runs across the Thunderpath with his rogues following, and Swallow, stumbling, drops Black Ear due to the slush. She follows Slash and they disappear, but Black Ear stands in the way of the monster. Owl Eyes howls that the monster is going to kill him.
