Chapter description[]
- Clear Sky feels time slow down as he reaches out for Black Ear on the Thunderpath. The monster slams into him, sending him tumbling down the Thunderpath. He feels Black Ear safe, and Thunder calls out to him. Clear Sky asks if Black Ear is alive and when the kit asks to go home, he feels relief wash over him. He tells Black Ear that Slate, Silver Stripe and White Tail are all fine, and Pebble Heart are attending to their wounds. Sparrow Fur recommends to take the kit to Tall Shadow’s camp, and Thunder offers for Black Ear to ride on him. The tortoiseshell she-cat tells Black Ear he needs treatment and that she will bring Slate, and the black-and-white kit asks if Gray Wing will also be there. Clear Sky sees Sparrow Fur and Thunder sending a message through their eye contact and asks what happened. Thunder tells Clear Sky nothing is wrong, and the gray tom senses Thunder is lying to him.
- Owl Eyes offers for Clear Sky to lean on him, which he does. They make their way to Tall Shadow’s camp and Jagged Peak calls out to Clear Sky, and Owl Eyes explains what happened to Slash and Black Ear. Tall Shadow appears and asks Mouse Ear to volunteer his nest for the kit. Holly laps Black Ear and asks Thunder to bring over more moss, as the black-and-white kit is cold. Clear Sky lies his head on the edge of the nest and falls asleep.
- Clear Sky wakes to see Thunder, and he asks his son if his campmates need him. The gray tom notices that his tail has herbs stuck on it, and Thunder informs him Pebble Heart made a poultice for his tail. Clear Sky tells Thunder that Gray Wing saved his kits so it was his responsibility to take care of his kits. Thunder gives him some wet moss and Clear Sky drinks from it, telling his son that when he said Gray Wing saved his kits, he meant Thunder, too, not only Dew Petal, Flower Foot and Tiny Branch. Clear Sky overhears Slate arguing with Holly and the dark gray she-cat mews she has to take Black Ear home as it might be his last moment for something, and she doesn’t finish her sentence. Clear Sky concludes that Gray Wing is sick, and Thunder sadly tells him that this time, he might not heal. The gray tom is shocked and vows to see his brother, and Thunder comes with him. Clear Sky stumbles and feels pain, and Thunder promises him he will get to Gray Wing in time.
