Chapter description
- Gray Wing hides in the shadowy pines, staring at the Carrionplace and wondering how Slash could keep Star Flower in the disgusting place. Lightning Tail is beside him with Leaf and Reed close behind them. Reed had instantly volunteered once Gray Wing told him his plan, and Leaf and Lightning Tail wanted to join as he discussed his plan to Thunder. Leaf asks where Fern is, and that he wants to get back before Slash gets back from the meeting.
- Gray Wing recalls tracking Fern for a quarter moon until he finally found her on a patrol with Slash's cats. They had discussed a meeting place and Fern told him to meet her by the Carrionplace the night of the meeting.
- As the four cats wonder if she is coming, Fern appears from behind a bush. She leads them around the scrubland near a dense patch of bracken. Smelling fear on her, Gray Wing tells Fern to go back to her camp and they'll handle it. She thanks them before pelting off. Gray Wing asks everybody if they know the plan, and the cats confirm it.
- Lightning Tail stalks towards Swallow and Snake who are guarding the bracken. He asks if there are any good places to hunt around there. Angry, the two guard cats stalk towards them but stop as Leaf lets out an anguished yowl.
