“Star Flower was just Slash’s excuse to start stealing from us. He is determined to hate us, and he must find a reason to justify his hate. It is deep in his bones, just as it was with One Eye.”

Chapter description[]

Wind Runner angrily comments on the theft of their prey, and Gray Wing follows her and Gorse Fur to the meeting Thunder called. Minnow mews it would have been a good idea to stay at camp with Spotted Fur and Reed, as Moth Flight and Dust Muzzle are too young to fight rogues, in case they attack camp. Slate asks Gray Wing if Thunder has a plan in mind and the ginger tom greets Wind Runner. River Ripple, Tall Shadow and Clear Sky sat perched in the middle and Thunder tells the cats rogues have stolen their prey. The other leaders agree except River Ripple, who tells them the rogues haven’t been stealing their prey. Clear Sky apologizes for pulling everyone into the problem that started with Star Flower’s abduction, but he needed them to be involved. Gray Wing agrees with his brother, saying Star Flower was only an excuse of Slash’s. Wind Runner suggests finding out how many rogues of Slash’s there are, and Gray Wing offers to go alone. Thunder brings up the idea of training, as that’s what’s happening in his camp. The cats agree, and Gray Wing leaves to find Fern.
Gray Wing heads for the rogue camp, listening for sounds. He hears a rustling in the grass and Fern appears, who teases Gray Wing about his horrible smell. Gray Wing tells her he needs information and Fern asks about Star Flower and her kits, and she brings up Juniper and Willow. They argue and Gray Wing asks Fern why she stays even though she hates it here, and Fern explains whenever she tries to leave, she thinks Slash is watching her. Gray Wing asks how many rogues there are, and Fern tells him if the forest cats stand up to Slash, then some of her campmates might rebel too; however, she tells him she can’t promise him anything. Fern tells Gray Wing she must leave now, and Gray Wing offers her to come with him instead.
However, the black she-cat refuses, telling him that her sister would be in trouble if she does go with him. Fern warns Gray Wing that Slash is determined to torture them for being happy, and she leaves him. Gray Wing runs through the pines, feeling him struggle for breath, and believes that is because of the cold night air. As he reaches camp, Gray Wing sees Slate, who worries about him. The gray tom insists on speaking to Wind Runner first, and he has difficulty trying to breathe. He tells Wind Runner if all the groups join forces, then they might be able to win the battle against Slash. Wind Runner decides on having guards, and sends Gray Wing and Slate to their nests. Gray Wing realizes that Slate fixed up the nest for him and falls asleep into disturbing dreams.
