"I will always be in your heart, just as you are in mine. You will be a great warrior, Twigbranch. I can see that already. And [Violetshine...] You'll be a wonderful mother to those kits."
— Pebbleshine to Twigbranch and Violetshine in The Raging Storm, page 303

Pebbleshine is a sleek[9] and pale,[10] brown-speckled white she-cat with green eyes[2] and a long, thick tail.[11]

Pebbleshine was a SkyClan warrior under Leafstar's leadership in the gorge. Pebblekit was born to Sparrowpelt and Tinycloud alongside her brother, Parsleykit. Pebblepaw was mentored by Billystorm and developed a rivalry with Hawkpaw. However, when he saved her from a fire, she began to develop feelings for him. When Billystorm was killed by badgers, Pebblepaw was wracked with grief and blamed herself. Following Billystorm's death, Sandynose became her new mentor. When SkyClan was driven out from the gorge, she earned her warrior name of Pebbleshine and became mates with Hawkwing; however, she was kidnapped by a Twoleg monster while expecting his kits. After she escaped, Pebbleshine yearned to find Hawkwing and her Clan. With Micah's guidance, Pebbleshine was able to give birth to two she-kits; however, after attempting to drive away a badger, she was hit by a monster on the Thunderpath. When she reached StarClan territory, Micah allowed her to become a ghost and let her watch over her kits while Alderpaw and Needlepaw brought them to the Clans. When Tree was able to let her appear in front of her kin, she reunited with Hawkwing and her daughters, and with her knowing they're together and safe, she ascended to StarClan.

Hawkwing: "My love. I thought I would never see you again."
Pebbleshine: "I'm sorry I left you alone. I was trapped in the monster. I could feel it taking me farther and farther away. I fought to get out, but there was nothing I could do."
Hawkwing: "I wish I'd been able to find you."
Pebbleshine: "Losing you was unbearable, but then.. then our kits came. [...] I've been with you both since you were born. Even after I died, I couldn't leave you. I couldn't go to StarClan, not while you faced life with only each other."
Hawkwing: "[Twigbranch and Violetshine] have me now. And their Clans."
—Hawkwing and Pebbleshine reuniting The Raging Storm, page 302
Alderpaw of ThunderClan and Needlepaw of ShadowClan discover her abandoned kits and name them Twigkit and Violetkit. They take them back to the Clans. The two sisters often reflect about their mother, more so Twigkit than Violetkit, the former believing their mother was still alive. Twigpaw goes on a journey to find her mother, but the patrol concludes she was hit by a monster and perished. Twigpaw, still insistent to find her kin, discovers SkyClan. She meets her father, Hawkwing, who reveals her mother was Pebbleshine.
Pebbleshine speaks with Tree, a cat who can speak with ghosts, and convinces Twigbranch to bring SkyClan back to the lake. Tree makes her appear, and Pebbleshine reunites with her daughters and Hawkwing. She tells them how much she loves them, as well as informing Violetshine that she is expecting kits. Pebbleshine finally ascends to StarClan, but promises to watch over her family.

"I can't imagine losing you."
―Hawkwing to Pebbleshine Hawkwing's Journey, page 271
In Hawkwing's Journey, she is an apprentice named Pebblepaw with her mentor being Billystorm. Her attitude towards Hawkpaw changes after he saves her from a fire, though he remains hostile following Duskpaw's death. During the first journey to find the other Clans, Pebblepaw saves Hawkwing from a badger and blames herself for her mentor's death. When Hawkwing thanks her for saving him, she says that if she hadn't helped Hawkwing and Blossomheart first, her mentor would still be alive. Sandynose is named her new mentor. She and Hawkwing begin to grow closer, to the point that even Darktail can begin to tell. When Darktail's rogues drive SkyClan from the gorge, she and Hawkwing gather Birdwing's kits and escape in the night. She earns her warrior name, Pebbleshine, alongside her brother, Parsleyseed.
During SkyClan's journey to find the other Clans, Pebbleshine reveals to Hawkwing she's expecting his kits. She discovers a Twoleg monster full of birds, and while attempting to catch them for the starving Clan, Pebbleshine is trapped and the monster drives away. Hawkwing despairs over his lost mate and their unborn kits and frequently wonders if they survived. Echosong reveals that she saw a cat that resembled Hawkwing in one of her dreams, giving Hawkwing hope for his family's survival.

"If I've learned anything on this journey, it's that I can rely on myself to do what has to be done. I hope my daughters can learn that lesson too—either on their own or because I'll be watching over them. Being part of a Clan is a wonderful thing, but so is knowing that you can depend on yourself."
―Pebbleshine to Micah about returning as a ghost Pebbleshine's Kits, chapter 8
In Pebbleshine's Kits, Pebbleshine is trapped in a monster and is separated from her Clan. She attempts to find her Clanmates at the monster camp, but two kittypets, Milo and Olive, lead her to the wrong one. After following the advice of her Clanmates in a dream to follow the setting sun, Pebbleshine gives birth to two daughters in a tunnel underneath a Thunderpath with Micah's guidance. Pebbleshine is killed by a monster when she attempts to lead a badger away from her kits onto the Thunderpath. She is determined to not leave her kits, and Micah and the other SkyClan spirits allow her to walk among the living as a ghost. While watching two young Clan apprentices find her kits, Pebbleshine promises to watch over her kits.

Personality[]

As an apprentice, Pebbleshine was a haughty, stuck-up, and bossy young she-cat. However, as she matured, she became sweet, caring, and curious.[12] Pebbleshine was also shown to be daring and brave on several occasions.[13] Examples of these include when she participates in fighting Dodge's group in the Twolegplace and when she attempted to hunt chickens for her Clan.[14][15]

Relationships[]

Hawkwing[]

"Hawkwing rested his chin on his mate’s back, resolving that he would protect her to the last drop of his blood. He would take care of her, and their kits, and the whole Clan."
―Hawkwing thinking about Pebbleshine Hawkwing's Journey, page 201
As an apprentice, Hawkwing very much dislikes Pebbleshine, and thinks it is annoying how she acts superior to all the other apprentices.[16] However, after he saves Pebbleshine from a fire, she tries to become closer to him and thank him. He rejects her, feeling as though he should have saved his brother Duskpaw instead of Pebbleshine. However, after they are both made warriors, they begin to grow close, and Hawkwing realizes how kind and friendly Pebbleshine is. They become mates, and eventually, Pebbleshine reveals to Hawkwing that she’s expecting kits. Hawkwing is overjoyed, and vows to protect her and the kits. Unfortunately, soon after this, Pebbleshine is taken away in a Twoleg monster. Hawkwing is devastated, and clings to the desperate hope that she will come back.[17] But she never does, and Hawkwing mourns for her still, but finds joy in her kits, who somehow found their way to him.[18]

Billystorm[]

Pebblepaw: "Billystorm! It’s okay. They’ve gone."
Waspwhisker: "I’m sorry, Pebblepaw. He’s dead."
Pebblepaw: "No!"
—Pebblepaw grieving over Billystorm Hawkwing's Journey, page 60
Pebbleshine enjoyed being Billystorm’s apprentice, and they have a good relationship. Pebbleshine is greatly affected when he dies, and mourns for her mentor for a long time, as she feels like it’s her fault he’s dead and that she could have saved him.[19]

Violetshine and Twigbranch[]

"I will always be in your heart, just as you are in mine. You will be a great warrior, Twigbranch. I can see that already. And [Violetshine...] You'll be a wonderful mother to those kits."
―Pebbleshine to Twigbranch and Violetshine The Raging Storm, page 303
Pebbleshine loves her kits very much. She gave up her spot in StarClan to be with them in the form of a ghost.[20] After the prophecy of having SkyClan beside the lake was fulfilled, Tree showed her to her kin, where she told Twigbranch, Violetshine, and Hawkwing how much she loves them and also told Violetshine that she was expecting kits.[21]

―Hawkwing about Pebblepaw Hawkwing's Journey, page 31

"I want to thank you for rescuing me. I was trapped, and you saved my life. What Leafstar said about you is true. You really are brave and courageous. I'm so happy to be alive, and it's all because of you."
―Pebblepaw to Hawkwing Hawkwing's Journey, page 31

"I can't imagine losing you."
―Hawkwing to Pebbleshine Hawkwing's Journey, page 271

Pebbleshine: "I've something to tell you. Just to prove that things aren't all that bad."
Hawkwing: "Well, what is it? Has Echosong had another vision?"
Pebbleshine: "No, nothing like that. I'm expecting kits!"
Hawkwing: "So that's what you were being so secretive about the other day!"
Pebbleshine: "I wasn't certain then, but I am now. Are you pleased?"
Hawkwing: "Pleased? I'm...Oh, Pebbleshine, this is wonderful! I'm going to be the best father I can be to these kits."
Pebbleshine: "You won't be raising them all by yourself, you know!"
Hawkwing: "I know. And you're going to be a wonderful mother."
—Pebbleshine telling Hawkwing she's pregnant Hawkwing's Journey, pages 283-284

Hawkwing: "Then Pebbleshine should stay here too."
Blossomheart: "Yes, Pebbleshine, you have to be careful."
Pebbleshine: "I'm not big enough yet for it to make any difference. I can still run just as fast as the rest of you. And it was my idea."
—Pebbleshine insisting she can hunt chickens even though she's pregnant Hawkwing's Journey, page 293

"It's amazing up here! There are so many of these fat birds, and they're all just trapped here. If we can work out how to open these nests, we can feed the whole Clan!"

Micah: "There is a way to go back."
Pebbleshine: "How? Tell me what I have to do! I'll risk anything!"
Micah: "You'll only be an observer. Your kits won't be able to see you, or know that you're near them. And neither will any other cat you care about. It's a lonely way to be. Are you sure that's what you want?"
Pebbleshine: "Of course I'm sure! Let's get on with it!"
Micah: "If you leave now, you might not be able to get back to StarClan for a long time. Perhaps you should do what all your warrior ancestors have done, and watch over your kits from StarClan."
Pebbleshine: "I'm sure. I've lived as a loner for many days now. I can stand it for as long as I need to, to take care of my daughters. And I don't need to be in StarClan to watch over them. Besides, my warrior ancestors knew that their loved ones would be safe in their Clan—in SkyClan. But the other Clans drove SkyClan from the forest. Why should I trust those Clans now? I hope they'll treat my kits fairly, but there's no way I can know that. I want to stay at least until SkyClan finds them—until they reach the end of their journey to the lake."
—Micah and Pebbleshine about the latter becoming a ghost Pebbleshine's Kits, chapter 8

"She had always believed that she and Hawkwing would grow old together, proudly watching their kits grow up and raise kits of their own. Now she had to let go of that dream, or part of it, anyway. She would never again be with Hawkwing in the way that she wanted to, but nothing would stop her from watching over her newborns. She remembered what Micah had said, that she wasn't following the path of her warrior ancestors...no, she was striking out on her own path, just as she had on the journey that began with the chicken monster. But now, as then, she knew she was on the right path: close to her kits, and close to these two young cats who must be deeply connected to her destiny and the destiny of her Clan."
―Pebbleshine's thoughts Pebbleshine's Kits, chapter 9

"Pebbleshine was kind and warm. I loved her very much."
―Hawkwing to Violetpaw and Twigpaw Darkest Night, page 48

Hawkwing: "I hope you don't mind me talking about Pebbleshine. I know you must miss her."
Violetpaw: "I don't really remember her."
Hawkwing: "You were very young when you lost her."
Violetpaw: "Don't you find it hard to talk about her?"
Hawkwing: "I like to remember her. And it's easier now that I have found you both. She was the kindest, sweetest cat I've ever known, and I miss her every day. But missing her doesn't have to feel so sad anymore because I have part of her with me."
Twigpaw: "Do we remind you of her?"
Hawkwing: "You remind me of her very much. Thank you for finding SkyClan. It's the sort of thing your mother would have done. She was brave and adventurous too."
