Pebbleshine licks her one-day-old kits as they suckle at her belly. She had collected enough moss to make a nest, and she is amazed that her kits are healthy and strong, promising that she will get them to SkyClan so they can grow up as Clancats. Pebbleshine can't remember the last time she ate, so she exits the tunnel.
She soon scents a shrew and stalks the prey, killing it. Pebbleshine quickly finishes the shrew. She makes her way back to the tunnel but she freezes as soon as she smells badger. The scent is fresh, and she looks around until she sees the badger's head. The badger lumbers toward her, snout in the grass. Pebbleshine guesses that the badger is hunting for slugs or beetles. Pebbleshine first thinks that the badger will ignore her and go on its way, but one of her kits lets out a wail.
Pebbleshine silently asks why her kits had to wake up at that moment. The badger sniffs the air, and as soon as another wail sounds, the badger flings itself forward onto the barrier covering the entrance to the tunnel. Pebbleshine hears a crack, and she attacks the badger, raking its side and darting away. She lets it get close to her and dashes toward the Thunderpath. She races onto the Thunderpath, the badger hard on her paws. Pebbleshine taunts it, and breaks off as a hard blow lands on her side. She flies through the air, and Pebbleshine lets out a cry before the world goes black.
