Petalstep: "No. This is all wrong. You saw what happened to Kestrelwing. I can't stop thinking about it. I can't stop...hearing it."

Galestar: "You think it's a warning from StarClan? It was only an accident, Petalstep. A terrible, awful accident...but nothing more. The rest of the Clan made it safely, didn't they?"

Petalstep is a former WindClan and StormClan warrior. Galestar wakes to find Petalstep sneaking away, and Petalstep is spooked upon realizing that her leader is watching her. Galestar follows and confronts the older warrior, wondering how she can leave after all they have been through together. Petalstep confides that she is haunted by Kestrelwing's death, and that she is unhappy with StormClan's new life. Galestar argues that there had been no place for them back at home, but Petalstep points out that the moor had held enough prey for WindClan. She says that she wants to become a kittypet, and questions the validity of Galestar and Stripestar's dream for StormClan, before saying goodbye. Petalstep's choice to leave is remembered by StormClan, including Stripestar, Thrushcall, and Galestar.
