"If I'm bloodying my paws already, why stop at one cat?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Wind. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Frostpaw has to be inventing these visions. She's done that before, don't forget. Remember how much trouble she caused in RiverClan after Mistystar died. [...] I don't know. I'm not even sure she knows she's lying. The poor cat has certainly been through a lot in her young life, witnessing her mother's death, living in exile...Maybe Frostpaw just doesn't know what is real anymore. It's true that a cat did terrible things in pursuit of the leadership of RiverClan, but that wasn't Splashtail. I'm sad to say it was my littermate, Curlfeather. How she became a ruthless killer, we'll never know."
— Podlight about Frostpaw in Wind, chapter 7

Podlight is a sturdy[1] gray-and-white tom.[4]

Podlight is a RiverClan medicine cat under Splashtail's leaderships in the lake territories. He was born to Duskfur as Podkit alongside his sister, Curlkit. He earned his warrior name, Podlight, and sought refuge in ThunderClan when the Kin drove RiverClan away. Moons later, Podlight, Curlfeather, Fognose, and Splashtail were on a hunting patrol when Reedwhisker disappeared and assumed he had returned to camp without them. He advocated for the medicine cats to temporarily lead RiverClan, and he supported Owlnose during his time as leader, despite wanting leadership himself. After Frostpaw was believed to be dead, Podlight claimed to have dreams from StarClan and became RiverClan's newest medicine cat under Mothwing. He plotted with Splashtail to secure leadership for the younger tom, though Podlight had no proper connection to StarClan himself.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

Podlight and his sister, Curlfeather, are now warriors.

Shattered Sky[]

Podlight takes refuge in ThunderClan's territory alongside the rest of his Clanmates when the Kin drive them out of RiverClan territory. When Violetpaw makes her way there in order to get the Clans' help, she spots Dewnose, Podlight, and Beetlewhisker on a patrol. She waits as the three bound up to her, and Podlight is suspicious of her intentions. He asks why they should believe her when she explains she has come for help, and to see Twigpaw, saying they did not know if she was not a part of a rogue attack. Dewnose gives him a shove, asking if Darktail would really send an apprentice.
Violetpaw assures them she is there on her own, telling them they could get the others to escort her if they had to. Podlight gives a curt nod at that, seemingly satisfied. The patrol agrees to take her after she tells them the RiverClan prisoners are part of the reason she is there, Dewnose mewing they had better bring her to Bramblestar. Podlight cuts in sharply, adding Mistystar's name to his statement. They escort her to ThunderClan's camp, the two RiverClan cats flanking Violetpaw on either side.

Darkest Night[]

Podlight: "They chose rogues as their campmates."
Rowanstar: "I didn't."
Podlight: "But your Clan thought Darktail would be a better leader than you!"
—Podlight to Rowanstar at a Gathering Darkest Night, page 28
Podlight appears in a patrol with Mistystar, and the cats enter camp in the middle of an argument. Podlight stops and stares, before silence drops over the camp. At the Gathering a few days later, Podlight challenges ShadowClan and snarls that they chose rogues as their campmates. Rowanstar stares back at him and answers that he didn't, but the RiverClan warrior, holding his gaze, replies that his Clan still thought Darktail would make a better leader than him.

River of Fire[]

When RiverClan is escaping the fire in their camp, Podlight gets to safety and joins Mistystar's group of cats. Mistystar insists that no cat will be left behind, and the gray and white warrior says he thought he saw some of their Clanmates escaping a different way.

The Raging Storm[]

At a Gathering, Podlight is part of RiverClan's patrol. While on the island, he talks to Plumwillow and Sandynose.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

Mothwing: "Where's Reedwhisker?"
Podlight: "Nice to see you too, Mothwing. Isn't Reedwhisker here with you?"
Fognose: "I'm sure he'll be back soon. Have you noticed all the prey we brought home? It was a fantasic day's hunting!"
—Podlight and Fognose when they return to camp River, pages 87-88
Podlight goes on a hunting patrol with Reedwhisker, Curlfeather, Fognose, and Splashtail. At some point during their hunting patrol, Reedwhisker goes missing, and Podlight and the others assume he got lost or returned to camp without them. When they return to camp, they are surprised to learn that Mistystar is dead and Reedwhisker is missing. Mothwing assumes that Podlight must be right and orders him and others to search for Reedwhisker, though Frostpaw is skeptical. Podlight insists that Reedwhisker will return eventually, and when the Clan argues who should be leader in the meantime, Podlight volunteers but Mallownose challenges him. Podlight later advocates for the medicine cats to lead instead.

Sky[]

"I'll take a look once Podlight swallows this yarrow. Eat them. Who knows what else you swallowed with all the mud. It's better to be sick once now than to spend half a moon in the medicine den throwing up."
―Mothwing to Podlight Sky (book), page 150
Shortly after becoming leader, Owlnose takes Podlight, Splashtail, Mallownose, Sneezecloud, and Brackenpelt to hunt. However, the riverbank collapses and Podlight and Brackenpelt fall into the river. Sneezecloud and Owlnose help carry Podlight back to camp since he had swallowed muddy water. When Owlnose panics, Sneezecloud and Mothwing help Podlight into Mothwing's den and Mothwing gives him yarrow and watermint to eat, though he is reluctant to eat it.

Shadow[]

"You're not our leader!"
―Podlight to Tigerstar Shadow, page 59
Podlight questions Owlnose why he did not receive his nine lives, to which he responds that he did not receive them on his own accord as he knew he would never be a good leader. The gray-and-white tom is extremely vocal about his dislike of Tigerstar taking temporary leadership of RiverClan, and spits that the ShadowClan cat is not their leader. When Tigerstar shows up to perform a ceremony for Frostpaw, Podlight objects and says that these things should be reserved for RiverClan's leader. He believes that Tigerstar is treating RiverClan like young kits by assigning Cloverfoot to attend to the Clan, and is not happy with the way things are going.
While out hunting, Frostpaw makes a mistake and admits that she was not paying attention and it resulted in the loss of prey. Podlight is part of this hunting patrol, and Frostpaw expresses her apologies for letting prey get away. Despite the apprentice's blunder, Podlight, Havenpelt, and the others are able to successfully bring prey to RiverClan, having caught many mice between them.

Thunder[]

"I've always had strange dreams, but I didn't realize they were special."
―Podlight at the Gathering Thunder (book), page 335
At the Gathering, Podlight is announced as RiverClan's newest medicine cat after Frostpaw's disappearance. He claims to have had dreams from Riverstar in StarClan, and in turn becomes a medicine cat. Shortly after this announcement, Podlight declares Splashtail as RiverClan's new leader. Frostpaw speculates if Podlight is working together with Splashtail, since Podlight is her mother's littermate.

Wind[]

"You're no longer RiverClan. You can't speak for us. I am the new medicine cat for RiverClan."
―Podlight's scathing remark to Frostpaw Wind, chapter 7
Mothwing begins training Podlight as her new apprentice, though he barely listens to what she is trying to teach him. At Podlight's first half-moon meeting, Jayfeather questions the validity of Podlight's and Frostpaw's conflicting visions, suspecting that only one of them can be correct. Podlight explains how he received two visions: one of marigold after Duskfur injured her paw and another of Twolegs leaving sharp rubbish that was removed before any cat could get hurt. He scorns Frostpaw's visions, claiming that they are false and Frostpaw must be confused; Frostpaw speculates that Splashtail must have informed him what to say earlier. However, Kestrelflight, Frecklewish, and the other medicine cats press Podlight to bring Splashtail to the Moonpool to receive his nine lives at once, and Podlight begrudgingly accepts. After the disagreements, Mothwing officially presents Podlight as her new apprentice to StarClan, though none of the other medicine cats chant his name. When the medicine cats share with StarClan, Podlight claims to have received a vision of his Clanmates sharing plentiful of prey. He mocks Frostpaw's vision of shadows consuming the river as bat droppings.
Frostpaw still believes Podlight to be a fake medicine cat. She Puddleshine spy on Podlight and Splashtail at the Moonpool for the latter's leader ceremony. Splashtail does not intend to receive his nine lives, and Podlight is unsure how the ceremony is even supposed to commence. He and Splashtail joke about what the ceremony might even look like, with Podlight suggesting that Splashtail might have to fight nine StarClan warriors. Frostpaw and Puddleshine watch Riverstar appear from the Moonpool, though Podlight and Splashtail fail to see the StarClan spirit. Frostpaw realizes that Podlight is not a medicine cat after all. At the Gathering, Podlight corrects Tigerstar that Splashtail is now Splashstar and has received his nine lives.

Mistystar's Omen[]

Mistystar: "Great catch, Podkit. Make sure it doesn't eat you first!"
Podkit: "It won't. I killed it with one paw!"
—Mistystar and Podkit about the 'fish' the latter had killed Mistystar's Omen, chapter 6
When Leopardstar is brought into the camp after her fall, Duskfur is in the clearing with her kits, Podkit and Curlkit. Podkit looks at Leopardstar and asks his mother if she's dead. Duskfur tells him that she's not dead, she's just very tired. He is mentioned, though not by name, by his mother, when Mistyfoot announces that RiverClan's elderly leader, Leopardstar, had died during the night of an illness that Mothwing and Willowshine could not treat. Duskfur draws her kits closer to her and says she had hoped that Leopardstar would live to make her kits apprentices.
Later, when Mistyfoot returns to the camp after Dapplenose and Pouncetail show her where they think will be an excellent spot to bury the deceased leader, Grasspelt's hunting patrol had returned with two minnows, and Duskfur tells Mistyfoot to have them, because her kits, mentioned again not by name, can eat later. He is again namelessly mentioned when Mallownose's patrol returns with only tiny minnows, and Mistystar asks if that was all they had, because that would not be able to feed Curlkit, Podkit, and Duskfur let alone the whole Clan. Duskfur asks Mistystar if she can take her kits to bed after moonhigh on the night of Leopardstar's vigil.
Later, Podkit plays in the clearing after Mistystar returns from her leadership ceremony. He calls to Mistystar when he sees her, telling her to watch him as he sinks his claws into a twig and begins dragging it toward the nursery. He tells her that he's caught a giant fish to feed to the whole Clan. Mistystar congratulates him on his brilliant catch, and tells him to make sure the fish doesn't eat him first. Podkit replies that he knows it won't, and that he killed it with one paw. Duskfur walks out of the nursery and tells Podkit that she hopes he wasn't been bothering Mistystar. Mistystar assures her that he isn't bothering her, and adds that if he can catch a fish that size already then she would be glad to make him a warrior right away. Podkit looks around, his eyes wide, asking her if she really means it. His sister, Curlkit, walks out of the nursery at that moment and tells him not to be so minnow-brained. Duskfur scolds her for being rude. Podkit adds that Curlkit had started it and starts to shred his twig with his claws. After Mistystar and her patrol return from RiverClan's first patrol in the territory in the opposite direction from the lake beyond their territory, Podkit is seen eating one of the baby mice they brought back, exclaiming that mice are almost as yummy as trout.

Mothwing's Secret[]

Before the Great Battle, Mothwing treats Podkit's cough with some comfrey, but the small protests, insisting the herb tastes nasty. Mothwing soothes Podkit by explaining the herbs will help him and he needs to behave like a brave warrior. Duskfur thanks Mothwing, and Mothwing reminds her to stay in the nursery and defend her kits during the battle.

Author statements[]

  • Kate has said that she would like Reedwhisker to be Duskfur's mate and the father of Curlfeather and Podlight, and even wrote it in her Allegiance list, but it isn't confirmed as canon.[blog 1]

Quotes[]

"Reedwhisker will come back! Why would any cat think he won't? We don't want to tempt fate like that, do we?"
―Podlight to Duskfur about Reedwhisker's disappearance River, page 121

"And now Podlight barely listens to what I'm trying to teach him. He can't tell tansy from marigold—and what's more, he doesn't seem to care. I'm not going to leave my Clanmates to die from battle wounds when a competent medicine cat could save them."
―Mothwing about Podlight Wind, chapter 4

Podlight: "They are. [Frostpaw] is the only RiverClan medicine cat who's had false visions."
Frostpaw: "To begin with, I was manipulated by my mother. No cat is manipulating me now."
Podlight: "You're responsible for your own decisions. Just like any cat. And you have made some very bad ones."
Frostpaw: "Really? Then what do you think about this? I had a vision where Riverstar, the first leader of our Clan, came to speak with me. And he showed me how Reedwhisker died. Splashtail killed him! [...] My visions are real!"
—Podlight and Frostpaw at the half-moon meeting Wind, chapter 7
