At numerous points in the Warriors series, the Clans and other groups have taken in prisoners during times of battle and conflict. Some prisoners are held for ransom, while others are confined because they are deemed too dangerous. This page aims to list the cats who were imprisoned by various groups.
As the Clans are inherently enemies, any chance to capture an enemy warrior to gain information is seen as a benefit.[1] Prisoners may be kept for ransom, such as obtaining herbs,[2] or to prevent retaliation.[3][4] The length of imprisonment varies from less than a day to several moons.[5] Prisoners are usually kept in a separate den away from the others under constant guard by warriors.[6] While prisoners may leave their prison under guard in camp,[7] rarely are they let outside of camp.[8]
Per the warrior code, Clan cats treat their prisoners with dignity and respect.[1][5][9] Only with Ashfur did the Clans collectively agree to kill him.[10] Prisoners in the Clans are typically provided clean bedding, fresh-kill, have their wounds treated, and provided opportunities to make dirt.[11] Care for the prisoners may fall unto the apprentices,[1] the queens,[12] or other warriors.[7] Both and Ivypaw and Twigpaw were surprised how welcoming ShadowClan was when they were captured.[13][7]
Prisoners held by other groups are typically not treated as well compared to the Clans. In TigerClan, their prisoners were held in an abandoned fox hole and starved.[14]Tigerstar showed no regard for TigerClan's prisoners, and advocated for their deaths.[15] In Darktail'sKin, the prisoners were kept in the bramble thicket that used to be RiverClan's nursery and were also starved with threats of death.[16]The Sisters prohibited Squirrelflight and Leafstar from leaving, and Snow attacked Leafstar when she tried to escape.[17] However, they treated Leafstar's wound and Squirrelflight was allowed to help around their camp.[18]
In order to quantify it, prisoners are defined as:
Cats who are confined by another entity/Clan/group against their own will. This does not include their own Clan.
May include cats who are physically confined to a den or camp and/or placed under a guard.
Are not kittypets or cats who are confined by a Twoleg as they are defined as kittypets.
Living cats.
And are cats confined for an extended period of time.
Notable exceptions[]
Hollypaw was held in RiverClan's temporary camp on the island when she wanted to check up on Willowpaw.[19]Leopardstar confined her to the island as her punishment for spying,[20] though she was allowed to leave when Squirrelflight arrived to bring her home.[21]
Ivypaw was held in ShadowClan's camp when she was caught on their territory.[13] However, she was only captured for less than a day in exchange for herbs for Littlecloud.[22]
After fleeing ShadowClan, Yellowfang is captured by Firepaw and taken into ThunderClan as a prisoner from the enemy Clan so she could heal her wounds.[1]
After protecting the kits against ShadowClan, Bluestar offers for Yellowfang to join ThunderClan. She accepts,[25] and she later becomes their medicine cat.[26]
After being blinded by Yellowfang following a failed attempt to destroy ThunderClan, Brokenstar is taken prisoner and is renamed Brokentail.[5] He is demoted to the rank of elder.[27]
He is killed by Yellowfang when she feeds him deathberries after Brokentail fails to overthrow ThunderClan with Tigerclaw.[28]
Twigpaw visits her sister Violetpaw to explain that their mother is dead. ShadowClan decides to keep her hostage to coerce ThunderClan to convince WindClan to give them lungwort they need to cure the yellowcough plague.[2]
A ThunderClan patrol demands for Twigpaw to return home, and Crowfrost lets her go without the lungwort.[32]
Posing as Bramblestar, the impostor is imprisoned in ShadowClan's camp after it is revealed he is an impostor.[33]
The Clans debated on what to do with Ashfur before finally agreeing to kill him.[10] Ashfur manipulates Shadowsight into letting him escape to save Bramblestar.[34]
While Tigerstar and his strongest warriors were stuck on the island, Splashtail led a violent assault on ShadowClan's camp. After defeating ShadowClan, Splashtail threatened to kill their kits unless they obeyed.[35]
A joint-patrol with ThunderClan, SkyClan, and WindClan defeated Splashtail's meager guards and rescued ShadowClan.[36] ShadowClan remained terribly wounded and could only spare Blazefire, Cloverfoot, and Hopwhisker to help the other Clans battle Splashtail.[37]
Splashtail kept Mosspelt, Havenpelt, and her newborn kits trapped in with rotten food and bedding. Havenpelt's kits were held ransom and threatened with death unless RiverClan obeyed Splashtail's orders.[38]
A joint-patrol with ThunderClan, SkyClan, and WindClan defeated Splashtail, rescuing RiverClan from Splashtail's claws.[36][39][40]
Nightheart bargains his freedom for Ridgekit and Duskkit so Sneezecloud and Fognose can let them go. After narrowly escaping the RiverClan cats, Nightheart is imprisoned in ShadowClan's camp.[38]
Gray Wing sends Jackdaw's Cry and Thunder to tell Clear Sky to meet the moor cats at the four trees at the next full moon to discuss peace between the groups.[41] Clear Sky keeps Jackdaw's Cry prisoner until then as ransom.[3]
At the four trees, Clear Sky brings Jackdaw's Cry. Because he was starved, Jackdaw's Cry catches a bat, which instigates a battle.[42] Jackdaw's Cry is eventually killed in the battle.[43]
