"Things change. Is it possible that the will of StarClan has changed also? StarClan gave each Clan the skills they need to survive in their own territory. RiverClan cats swim well. ThunderClan cats are good at stalking prey in the undergrowth. SkyClan cats can leap into trees because there's not much cover in their territory. Doesn't this mean that each Clan couldn't live in another Clan's territory?" |
— Redstar to Cloudstar in Cloudstar's Journey, chapter 10 |
Redstar is a muscular[4] dark ginger tom[2] with yellow eyes.[5]
Redstar was an ancient ThunderClan leader during the destruction of the SkyClan forest territory. He led his Clan to victory against SkyClan in a battle for a strip of contested territory. Redstar and the other Clan leaders refused to give land to SkyClan after their territory was completely destroyed, forcing SkyClan to leave the forest. However, Redstar allowed Cloudstar's kits, Spottedkit and Gorsekit, to join ThunderClan. After joining StarClan, Redstar came to regret his actions, apologizing to Cloudstar and giving Leafstar a life for wisdom.

In the Super Editions[]
Firestar's Quest[]
- "All of ThunderClan joins with me to tell you we're sorry for what we did."
- ―Redstar's posthumous apology to Cloudstar Firestar's Quest, chapter 35
- Seasons later, Redstar's spirit appears alongside the spirits of Birchstar, Swiftstar, and Dawnstar at Leafdapple's leadership ceremony. He apologizes to Cloudstar, saying that he was wrong to abandon SkyClan and that all of ThunderClan were sorry for what they had done. He gives Leafdapple her fifth life: wisdom to make the hardest decisions. He and the other leaders approach Firestar, thanking him for righting their wrongs. He stays with Firestar for a moment, and tells him his Clanmates are safe and waiting for his return.
Bramblestar's Storm[]
- Although unnamed, Redstar is mentioned by Firestar, when the old ThunderClan leader is talking to Bramblestar about SkyClan. He says that the leaders of ThunderClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, and RiverClan had to deal with the consequences of their actions after being responsible for driving out SkyClan. Firestar goes on to tell Bramblestar that each of these leaders had come to visit Leafstar during her leadership ceremony, and in turn, gave her a life. Firestar says that this served as not only an apology, but a reminder that one Clan is not able to survive alone.
In the Novellas[]
Cloudstar's Journey[]
- Redstar: "Patrolling the borders again, Cloudstar? Seedpelt told me she'd seen you here recently. Is SkyClan lacking in warriors?"
- Cloudstar: "There is no reason why a Clan leader shouldn't patrol with his warriors. After all, isn't that what you're doing here, Redstar?"
- Cloudstar's Journey, chapter 5
- Redstar confronts Cloudstar at the ThunderClan-SkyClan border, taunting him about the possibility of SkyClan being low on warriors. Cloudstar retorts back, but Redstar changes the subject, asking about the noises coming from SkyClan territory. Cloudstar responds coolly, concealing the fact that there is Twoleg trouble. They part ways, with Cloudstar leading his patrol deeper into SkyClan land, struck by the lack of concern ThunderClan payed his patrol. Stoatfur asks Cloudstar if they should have told Redstar the truth, but Cloudstar points out that they have no reason to tell ThunderClan of a weakness to exploit. When they reach camp, Cloudstar resolves not to trust Redstar.
- At a Gathering, Redstar stiffens as he hears Cloudstar's news of Twolegs activity in SkyClan territory. The ThunderClan leader murmurs to Cloudstar that he is glad to hear SkyClan does not mind sharing the territory with Twolegs, but Cloudstar responds that they are not sharing the territory, assuring him that they have strong borders. Redstar mentions that the SkyClan scent markers are being refreshed more than usual, suggesting they are afraid.
- Cloudstar leads an attack on ThunderClan in an attempt to reclaim a strip of their former territory, which was given to ThunderClan by Darkstar. Redstar tussles with Fernpelt, sending her tumbling into the bracken with one powerful well-dealt blow. ThunderClan achieves a decisive victory, and at the next Gathering all of SkyClan arrives at Fourtrees. Redstar is shocked to hear that all of SkyClan territory has been destroyed, but when Cloudstar asks for the Clans to provide them with new land, Redstar and the other leaders refuse. He declares that SkyClan should leave, and is joined in agreement by Swiftstar. The WindClan medicine cat, Larkwing, protests that there has always been five Clans in the forest, but Redstar responds coldly that things change. As the Clan leaves, Redstar calls for StarClan to go with them, but Cloudstar snarls that StarClan has abandoned SkyClan and that he will have nothing more to with them. He walks out, his Clan following him.
In the Field Guides[]
Battles of the Clans[]
- Redstar: "StarClan approves, doesn't it?"
- Kestrelwing: "You won this battle with the blessing of our ancestors. You're a hero in the stars already."
- Battles of the Clans, page 152
- After the battle with SkyClan, Redstar returns to his Clan to tell them of ThunderClan's victory. He is wounded, but can hardly feel it from his triumph. After jumping down from the Highrock to check up on Kestrelwing, the ThunderClan medicine cat, his deputy, Seedpelt, reports that all was quiet when he was out. Redstar says that he thought it would be, and thanks Seedpelt for staying behind, even though he knew she would have liked to have been there. He congratulates his brother, Amberclaw, on a well-fought battle, commenting on a move against Mousefang.
- He refuses Kestrelwing's treatment on his shoulder until all the other warriors are treated. He later meets the medicine cat in the clearing, and Kestrelwing shows him that the stars are especially bright. Redstar knows that it means StarClan approves, and he feels proud and relieved. He tells Kestrelwing that their ancestors must have meant for them to win the battle, and that Darkstar's word on the territory still stands.
The Ultimate Guide[]
- Although not mentioned by name, it is mentioned on Cloudstar and Skywatcher's page that when Twoleg dens started to destroy SkyClan territory, Cloudstar looked to his rival Clans to help him survive. Instead, Redstar and the other leaders protested that sharing territory would be impossible, that SkyClan could not catch different prey, and that if there were only four Great Oaks in the hollow, perhaps there were only meant to be four Clans.
