Reedtail is a pale gray tabby tom. He has a long, stiff tail that is darker, thin, and straight like a reed.

Reedkit is born to Ottersplash and Timberfur, along with his sister, Sedgekit, and brother, Loudkit. He, Sedgekit, and Loudkit are looking for Blackkit who is hiding underneath Crookedjaw's stomach. Reedkit frets that his friend might have fallen into the river but his littermates disagree, saying that Blackkit is smart enough to stay away.

When Brightsky is kitting, Birdsong offers to take him into the elders' den, but Reedkit doesn't want to, claiming it's too stinky. Shimmerpelt tells him not to be rude, and Troutclaw takes the kits to play 'hunt the tick.' Later, Crookedjaw plays with the kits, thinking how close they are to becoming apprentices. While playing, Reedkit pretends that the camp may be invaded by Twolegs any moment, so they have to be prepared.

The day he becomes an apprentice, Reedpaw, along with his littermates and his new mentor, Beetlenose, goes training with Sedgepaw and Loudpaw, who have been apprenticed to Crookedjaw and Oakheart. They had wanted to go swimming in the river but Crookedjaw didn't let them because it was too cold. He races along the shoreline with Loudpaw while Sedgepaw is with Crookedjaw. Later on, while Skypaw practices catching a bird with a leaf and she lands half a tail length in over it, he and Loudpaw snuffle with amusement behind Beetlenose. While practicing battle moves to distract Twolegs away from the camp with his littermates and their mentors, Reedpaw acts like a kittypet with an injured leg, walking around and screeching as if in pain. Afterwards, all the apprentices start to practice climbing trees. He hauls himself up the tree until he reaches the lowest branch, which wobbles and shivers under his weight.

Later, he and his siblings are being assessed in battle moves by their mentors, when a dog nearly attacks the RiverClan camp. The three are told to climb up a tree by Oakheart, Crookedjaw, and Beetlenose, who go to attack the dog and defend the camp. After Mudfur fights alone for Sunningrocks and prevails, Reedpaw begs his mentor, Beetlenose, to take him to Sunningrocks. Skypaw says she wishes to go with him but has to clear out Birdsong's nest first. He most likely did not go since he curious about Mudfur's fight with Adderfang, but wants to train battle moves since training was hindered by the dog in camp. They eventually go out to train and he scrambles up a willow tree to practice climbing.

He later becomes a warrior by the name of Reedtail. Soon after, when Hailstar decides to give up Sunningrocks, he thinks that they should fight for it despite Hailstar's orders not to. Reedtail hurries out of the warriors den with Skyheart, followed by Blackclaw and Loudbelly. Timberfur assigns him to a patrol with Echomist and Skyheart. He is assigned to a hunting patrol with Leopardfur and Blackclaw by Crookedstar.

Leopardstar's Honor

As kits, Reedkit, Sedgekit, and Loudkit frequently defend each other from teasing by their denmates. Reedkit is later named an apprentice as Reedpaw with Beetlenose as his mentor. While sharing prey with Sunpaw and Leopardpaw, Skypaw shares her admiration for Reedpaw and Sunpaw also adds that she likes Beetlenose. When Skypaw fails her warrior assessment, Reedpaw and the other apprentices agree to wait until Skypaw passes before earning their warrior names. Reedpaw is then named Reedtail. After Oakheart's death, Leopardfur asks Owlfur to take Reedtail and Piketooth to mark the WindClan border. Later, Leopardfur leads a hunting patrol with Reedtail, Emberdawn, Frogleap, and Mosspelt and the patrol grumbles when they spot a ShadowClan patrol hunting on their land due to Crookedstar granting Brokenstar permission. Continuing their patrol, they spot a Twoleg fishing and decide to steal its fish. Reedtail helps destroy the Twoleg's flappy den while Leopardfur and Frogleap grab one of the large salmon.

While hunting near the gorge, Leopardfur, Reedtail, Whiteclaw, Sedgecreek, and Voleclaw encounter a ThunderClan and WindClan patrol trespassing on their territory. Whiteclaw leads the attack and Reedtail and Leopardfur attack Graystripe. However, ThunderClan reinforcements arrive to help their Clanmates, and Whitestorm bats Reedtail away. Later, Reedtail cleans Tanglewhisker's nest. Following Frogleap's death, Reedtail asks if it was ThunderClan's fault. Following the flood, Leopardfur orders Reedtail, Skyheart, and Heavystep to hunt for prey in the upslope. Later, Reedtail, Beetlenose, and Sedgecreek escort Tallstar and Stagleap into their camp. Following Silverstream's death, Reedtail speaks against having her two kits—Stormkit and Featherkit—from joining the Clan due to their half-Clan heritage until Crookedstar threatens intervention for his kin. Reedtail also stops griping about the kits after Mosspelt begs for the Clan to allow her to nurse them following Robinkit's and Woodkit's deaths.

When Graystripe joins the Clan to be with his kits, Reedtail and Blackclaw are some of his harshest critics. When Leopardstar returns from the Moonstone to receive her nine lives, Reedtail looks up in anticipation as she announces her deputy. Reedtail and the others cheer when Stonefur is chosen. Later, Reedtail flees with the rest of his Clan after RiverClan fails to secure Sunningrocks from ThunderClan. When RiverClan joins with ShadowClan to form TigerClan, Reedtail, Blackclaw, and Skyheart are appreciative of Jaggedtooth and Boulder watching over the camp, though others are not as pleased. Reedtail participates in the raid on WindClan's camp, though they retreat after Tigerstar kills Gorsepaw. Reedtail also witnesses Tigerstar's death at Scourge's claws, though he and Sedgecreek move in front of the apprentices so they don't have to witness his gruesome body.

Trivia

Mistakes

• In Crookedstar's Promise, it is said that Leopardstar's generation, including Reedtail, all decided to wait until Leopardkit reached her sixth moon before they were all apprenticed, but in Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardkit was apprenticed early at five moons old.

• In Su Susann's "Missing Kits" on Vicky's Facebook, Reedtail is described with amber eyes. Reedtail's mate was Greenflower and their kits were Dragonflykit, a white tom with dark gray tabby patches and amber eyes, and Duckkit, a brown tabby tom with green eyes and a straight tail. Both kits were stillborn. Following the deaths of Greenflower and their kits, Reedtail became mates with Skyheart and their daughters were Icewing, Pinefur, and Duskfur. Reedtail also resides in StarClan.
