RiverClan is a group of cats that live in a part of the forest that is primarily wetland, or on shores of lakes, rivers, and streams. Their founding leader, Riverstar, got his name due to the river that saved his life, so by extension the name was thought to be given to the Clan.

Description

RiverClan is one of the five Clans that consider StarClan to be their warrior ancestors. They used to live on the reedy, pebbly plain near a river with very few trees in the forest territories, but now live in a patch of land surrounded by two streams. RiverClan cats are known for their amazing skill at fishing and love for the water. They also love beautiful things and are known to collect rocks, shells, and feathers to decorate their dens. Their diets mainly consist of fish, but they also eat water voles, shrews, and mice occasionally. They are contented, sleek, well-fed cats with well-groomed fur. The fish-eating Clan are known to be clever and graceful, but are perceived outside their Clan as being stubborn and lazy. Their long fur and glossy coats are an asset while swimming. RiverClan gets by in leaf-bare because, according to other Clans, they fatten themselves on fish during greenleaf in preparation for leaf-bare. RiverClan cats dislike adding birds to their fresh-kill pile. Sometimes other Clan cats, or Clanmates call them "fish-faces" or "fish-breath" as insults. RiverClan are strong swimmers and move through water as if they are part of it. RiverClan cats also have fast reflexes, which are useful to scoop fish from the bank. RiverClan cats often go well-fed, even during leaf-bare, and their sleek, handsome pelts are often something Twolegs are attracted to. Many Twolegs see this, and often take these cats to live in their homes, although RiverClan keeps quiet about it because many of those cats never come back.

Territory

In the forest territories

Notable landmarks in RiverClan's forest territory

The RiverClan forest territory is located in what Twolegs call Morgan Farm's Campsite and the River Chell. Landmarks in this territory include:

• Camp - A well-drained island surrounded by the river and reeds. The other Clans' fear of water means this camp has never been attacked.
• The gorge - A deep gorge cut by the river in the terrain, border with WindClan. Apprentices are forbidden to go near it.
• The river - A source of food and protection to the Clan. Sometimes, it is peaceful, while other times, it floods.
• Twoleg bridge - A bridge built by Twolegs that allows the cats to go to Fourtrees when the river is high.
• Beech copse - A training area for apprentices and warriors.

The whole camp is surrounded by reeds. In the central area, the cats lie and share tongues in the sun. The warriors' den is in a tangle of the reeds. It is also right next to the nursery. On the roof of the den, cats have woven in sparkling rocks and shells, collected from the river. Whenever sunlight shines into the den, brilliant reflections are made. The river comes up very close to the nursery, which allows the kits to practice getting wet and start swimming, preparing them for when they become apprentices. To keep the nursery from floating away in case the water levels rise, or floods, the walls are built very thickly. Across the central clearing stands the elders', leader's, apprentices', and the medicine dens. They are all in a tangle of reeds covered by a hard reedy roof.

In the lake territories

Notable landmarks in RiverClan's lake territory

The lake territory for RiverClan does not have any name by Twolegs. However, the Twoleg names for the borders are Littlepine Road, Littlepine Sailing Center, and Whitechurch Road. The territory includes the River Alba. Landmarks here include:

• Camp - Like the previous camp, this one is tucked away on a piece of land surrounded by two streams, making it well-defended.
• Greenleaf Twolegplace - During greenleaf, Twolegs come here to swim noisily.
• Halfbridge - A peculiar bridge that ends halfway in the water. Twoleg boats are anchored to it.
• Lake shore - RiverClan owns the south to western part of the lake shore.

The camp is full of lush trees, tall reeds, and streams full of fish. There is a main stream that joins a smaller one, and on that triangle of land, RiverClan's camp resides. In the camp, there is a nest of brambles which is where the nursery is. It is strongly reinforced to prevent any threats and dangers. In other thickets are the elders' and leader's dens. The medicine cat's den is located behind a thorn bush and overhangs the stream. The earth was washed away, leaving a pool in the roots and a hole in the bank. This is essential for the medicine cats, who can store their supplies and get fresh water at any time. There are not as many shiny things as in the old camp, but Twolegs often leave behind unique things that the cats can use to decorate their nests. However, they have to be careful, as not all Twoleg things are safe for them.

Eras

Riverstar

Riverstar was the founder of his Clan. He implemented many aspects of his past of the Cats of the Park into Clan tradition, including mentoring.

Riverstar was the founder and first leader of RiverClan. His deputy was Night, and his medicine cat was Dappled Pelt.

Ripple spent his younger days in a park filled with cats, where they lived peacefully together. One day, Twolegs came to the park and captured all the cats Ripple had known for years. Ripple and his mentor, Arc, escaped, but Ripple was separated from Arc and fell into the river. Unexpectedly, the river carried him to safety, and Ripple changed his name to River Ripple to thank the river for helping him.

River Ripple was a mellow and calm cat, and he lived peacefully by the river until the mountain cats come to the forest territories. He met Gray Wing, Wind, Gorse, and Rainswept Flower, who thought he was weird. River Ripple did not interfere with the mountain cats' business, but he drew their attention when he saved Clear Sky's group from a fire. He then created his own group by the river, and many cats joined him, including Shattered Ice and Dappled Pelt. His group was later named RiverClan.

When Moth Flight received a message from StarClan saying that the leaders needed to come to the Moonstone to receive their nine lives, River Ripple went and took the name of Riverstar.

Hailstar

Hailstar was determined to take back Sunningrocks. He also made sure even the most troubled RiverClan cats got chances to prove themselves.

Hailstar was the leader of RiverClan before Crookedstar. His deputies were Shellheart and Crookedjaw, and his medicine cats were Brambleberry and Mudfur.

Hailstar was a confident and respected leader. He sent RiverClan into many battles for Sunningrocks, and was not afraid to start border fights. He had a mate, Echomist, and three kits, Voleclaw, Petaldust, and Beetlenose.

Hailstar watched Crookedkit as he grew up, and was proud of what he saw from the young tom. When Crookedjaw's father, Shellheart, retired to the elders' den, he made Crookedjaw deputy. When Hailstar lost his final life to rats, Crookedjaw became leader.

Crookedstar

Crookedstar dedicated his life to serve his Clan above all else, originally as part of a promise to Mapleshade. Once he rejected her, Crookedstar continued being loyal, but for the right reasons.

Crookedstar was the leader of RiverClan after Hailstar. His deputies were Timberfur, Oakheart, and Leopardfur, and his medicine cats were Brambleberry and Mudfur.

Crookedstar was a noble and sensible leader who led his Clan during the time of Brokenstar. His mate was his childhood friend, Willowbreeze, and he had three kits with her: Willowkit, Minnowkit, and Silverkit. However, Willowbreeze, Willowkit and Minnowkit died of greencough soon after the kits were born, and Crookedstar became very protective of his remaining kit.

During Brokenstar's reign, Crookedstar agreed to let ShadowClan hunt in the river, fearing that if he did not, his Clan would be driven out. When WindClan returned, he allied with ShadowClan to try and drive them out, as he liked having WindClan's territory available for his Clan.

Crookedstar's daughter, Silverstream, started seeing a ThunderClan tom named Graystripe. Crookedstar knew he could do nothing to stop it, and that he must wait for her mistake to catch up to her. Soon after, Silverstream died giving birth to Graystripe's kits, Stormkit and Featherkit. Graystripe took the kits to ThunderClan, but when Crookedstar found out that they were Silverstream's kits, he sent a RiverClan patrol to bring them back. Graystripe came with them to RiverClan and lived there with his kits for a while, but ended up returning to ThunderClan.

When the river flooded the RiverClan camp, Fireheart and Graystripe saved two of Mistyfoot's kits. Crookedstar believed them when they told him about it, but his deputy, Leopardfur, was doubtful. He let Fireheart and Graystripe bring prey to RiverClan in their times of hardship. When the ThunderClan camp was destroyed by a fire, Crookedstar let them stay in RiverClan's camp.

After a long leadership, Crookedstar lost his final life to greencough and went to StarClan, Leopardfur succeeding him as leader.

Leopardstar

Leopardstar was a proud RiverClan leader who, despite making brash decisions, cared for her Clan and the cats in it.

Leopardstar was the leader of RiverClan after Crookedstar. Her deputies were Stonefur, Mistyfoot, and Hawkfrost, and her medicine cats were Mudfur and Mothwing.

Leopardstar led RiverClan during Tigerstar's tyranny. She was an independent, proud leader, who allowed little room for disobedience. She appointed Stonefur as her deputy.

Leopardstar exiled Graystripe from RiverClan when he refused to fight ThunderClan in a battle for Sunningrocks. She banded her Clan together with ShadowClan, forming TigerClan, mostly because she had a crush on Tigerstar. She was horrified with his plan to kill all Half-Clan cats, as he killed her own deputy, Stonefur. She immediately regretted joining TigerClan, and did not fight on Tigerstar's side in the battle with BloodClan. She appointed Mistyfoot to be her new deputy, in honor of Stonefur.

After this, there were many moons of peace. When Mistyfoot was captured by Twolegs, Leopardstar appointed Hawkfrost to be her temporary deputy, but he was replaced when Mistyfoot returned. When the other Clans said that they had to leave the forest territories, Leopardstar was adamant that RiverClan could survive off the river, but eventually admitted that the Twolegs would destroy everything and went with the other Clans to the lake territories.

At the lake, Leopardstar received a sign faked by Hawkfrost about Stormfur and Brook being obstacles to RiverClan's success. At first she was skeptical, but banished the two cats after Stormfur attacked Hawkfrost. When Sol came to the lake, she helped Onestar attack ThunderClan using the tunnels. She then sided with the other leaders in demanding Sol be banished.

When the lake dried up, Leopardstar's Clan was heavily affected and guarded the remaining water fiercely. Leopardstar lost her remaining lives during the drought, ascending to StarClan, and Mistyfoot succeeded her as leader.

Mistystar

Mistystar was one of the longest reigning leaders, using her wisdom to lead.

Mistystar was the most recently StarClan-appointed leader of RiverClan, succeeding Leopardstar. Her deputy was Reedwhisker, and her medicine cats were Mothwing and Willowshine, and later on Frostpaw.

Mistystar was a wise and competent leader. When Mistystar traveled to the Moonpool with Mothwing to receive her nine lives, she was shocked to learn that Mothwing did not believe in StarClan. She demoted Mothwing to an elder, but eventually came to understand that Mothwing only wanted the best for her Clan and let her become a medicine cat again.

When Twigkit and Violetkit were brought to the Clans, Mistystar suggested that ShadowClan take Violetkit and ThunderClan take Twigkit. Mistystar tried to protect her Clan during the reign of Darktail's Kin, but she was forced to shelter in ThunderClan with Reedwhisker when her Clan was taken over by Darktail. She helped drive the Kin away, and temporarily closed her borders afterward to give RiverClan time to recover.

Later, during an unusually harsh leaf-bare, Mistystar was troubled by the lack of connection to StarClan. When she tried to ask Bramblestar what it was like to come back from the dead, he grew defensive and said it was a secret. Later, she exiled Harelight and Icewing for fighting with the rebels instead of with RiverClan. When the Clan leaders voted to kill Bramblestar's body, Mistystar voted with Squirrelflight to preserve it, but was outvoted by the three other Clan leaders. Later, when Willowshine ventured into The Place of No Stars in an attempt to rescue Squirrelflight, she was killed by Ashfur.

Mistystar traveled into the Dark Forest to defeat Ashfur and was given the title of A Light in the Mist. After changes from the warrior code happened and cats began to question her, Mistystar collapsed in camp and later died after losing her ninth life. It was assumed that Reedwhisker would take her place, but after his mysterious death, Frostpaw interpreted a fake sign to mean that StarClan chose Curlfeather, who was killed by dogs on her way to the Moonpool, leaving RiverClan without a leader and Mothwing and Frostpaw scrambling to protect their Clan.

A Starless Clan Succession Crisis

Owlnose

Owlnose decided not to receive his nine lives, saying he did not think he could lead RiverClan in the right way.

After a vision of "Curlfeather" told Frostpaw to "think beyond the obvious choices" for the new RiverClan leader, Frostpaw decided to choose Owlnose as he was an unlikely choice. However, once Owlnose was in charge, he had trouble managing the Clan correctly. When Frostpaw took Owlnose to the Moonpool to get his nine lives, StarClan did not appear and Owlnose did not receive his nine lives, causing him to fake as leader during the Gathering. This enraged and confused many cats. Frostpaw decided to take Owlnose to the Moonpool again, hoping that StarClan would give him his nine lives this time, but Owlnose refused, telling Frostpaw that he did not want to be RiverClan leader.

Owlnose was an incompetent leader, as he was easily swayed and changed his choices based on how his Clanmates wanted them. He wanted to please all RiverClan cats and had trouble making decisions; it was noted that even Splashtail, the deputy, was brighter than the leader. When Tigerstar and his warriors invaded, the weakened RiverClan succumbed easily to the strong ShadowClan warriors. Afterwards, Icewing and Cloverfoot temporarily took over managing the Clan, with Tigerstar supervising.

Cloverfoot and Icewing

Cloverfoot held acting leadership with Icewing when ShadowClan annexed RiverClan following a succession crisis.

Icewing and Cloverfoot unofficially led RiverClan after Tigerstar's invasion. Cloverfoot, the ShadowClan deputy, was sent by Tigerstar as a stand-in ShadowClan leader because Tigerstar needed to focus on ShadowClan. Most RiverClan cats did not appreciate Cloverfoot's presence in the RiverClan camp, while Icewing was supported by most of the RiverClan cats and had won over Tigerstar's favor. However, since Icewing spent lots of time in ShadowClan during her prior exile and trained in the Dark Forest, some cats like Duskfur thought she was biased and was fine with ShadowClan taking over RiverClan.

Duskfur

Duskfur briefly became leader of RiverClan before stepping down.

Splashtail

Splashtail assumed the role of deputy after causing a coup by murdering Reedwhisker.

Splashtail was the unofficial RiverClan deputy during Owlnose's rule. He, along with Curlfeather, conspired to kill Reedwhisker so that they could lead RiverClan. After Reedwhisker's murder, Frostpaw saw a curled feather on her way to the Moonpool and interpreted that Curlfeather should be the new RiverClan leader. After Curlfeather was mauled and killed by dogs, Frostpaw had a fake vision of her mother telling her to choose an "unlikely" leader. This led to Frostpaw choosing Owlnose as leader, and he chose Splashtail as deputy. After Owlnose stepped down, Splashtail was also back to a normal warrior. Splashtail was hostile to Tigerstar and the other ShadowClan warriors.

Icestar

Following Splashtail's defeat, Icestar was chosen as RiverClan's new leader, ending the succession crisis.

Icestar is the current leader of RiverClan following the defeat of Splashtail. Her current deputy is Owlnose and her medicine cats are Mothwing and Frostdawn.

Interesting facts

• Black Ear gave RiverClan its name.
• In The Ultimate Guide, Crookedstar says that in the lake territories, RiverClan first settled on the island, to make their camp. At first, the island was thought to be a Gathering spot, but there was no way to access it without swimming.
