Chapter description[]
- Frostpaw recalls the night before Mistystar's vigil. After the vigil, Mosspelt, Mothwing, and Duskfur take the late leader's body to be buried. Frostpaw can feel the tension from every cat as they wonder about the whereabouts of Reedwhisker. There was no trace of the missing tom inside the territory, and while his scent can be picked up occasionally, there was no path to follow. The apprentice hasn't experienced a transition of leaders in her Clan before. She wonders if StarClan would even let RiverClan pursue a new leader with Reedwhisker still missing. Duskfur suggests implementing an acting leader. She is cut off by Podlight reminding her mother that the Clan should trust Reedwhisker to return, while Owlnose and Nightsky agree with Duskfur's suggestion. Duskfur proposes one of the medicine cats should become leader. Shimmerpelt prompts that Mothwing does not exactly follow StarClan, that Frostpaw had just become her apprentice.
- She enters the medicine den and notices a large dock leaf lying across the edge of her bedding. She inspects the unusually large leaf, and notices parts of it have been torn off into the shape of a star. Frostpaw believes this could be a sign from StarClan to make her leader, but she is hesitant to show the leaf to any other cat. She realizes that it is just a leaf, and walks to the clearing to show her Clanmates what she has found. Curlfeather asks what she is holding, and Frostpaw explains that the leaf was found in her nest. Her Clanmates believe that maybe the star-shaped leaf is a sign. Podlight announces that Frostpaw could speak to StarClan as their messenger. Mothwing reluctantly agrees for she and Frostpaw to become interim leaders until they can find a new leader. She suggests asking the other Clans for help. Frostpaw grows anxious around the discussion of becoming leader.
