"I wonder if I ought to tell Tigerstar. I feel like I should—but if I don't know what the problem is, will I just be making more trouble? Besides, Tigerstar told me to watch my step. If I'm not careful, I'll be making trouble for myself."

Chapter description[]

Padding along ShadowClan's border, Sunbeam is on a dawn patrol with Hopwhisker and Hollowspring, trying to distract her thoughts from Lightleap and Blazefire. When Hopwhisker and her sister talks about how peaceful it is, Sunbeam tells them that there will always be cats that go bad. As they go into the Twolegplace, the calico she-cat cuts herself on a Twoleg object, and the patrol heads for the nearest Clan, RiverClan for help.
Soon, a RiverClan patrol arrives, and they escort them to their camp. However, the ShadowClan cats are asked to wait outside the camp instead of inside the medicine-cat den, and they are confused and suspicious of RiverClan's behavior. Frostpaw and Mothwing treat Hopwhisker's wound, but when Sunbeam asks or tries to talk with the two medicine-cats, they act suspicously. This clues Sunbeam that something is wrong with RiverClan, thus noticing she was not able to see Mistystar or Reedwhisker, RiverClan's leader and deputy. Sunbeam asks the medicine cat apprentice about Reedwhisker, and Frostpaw avoids the brown and white tabby she-cat's question and answers vaguely. After Hopwhisker gets fully treated, they help her back to ShadowClan's camp and Sunbeam wonders if she should tell Tigerstar her suspicions, but she decides to be careful and not create any more trouble for herself.
