"There's peace, and there's letting another Clan walk all over us! I think we should go to WindClan and at least let them know that this can't happen again. It's more important than ever to defend our territory after everything ThunderClan has been through. We can't let other Clans think we're so weak that we allow WindClan to steal our prey!"

Chapter description[]

Flamepaw, Lilyheart, Stormcloud, and Twigbranch enter camp with measly bits of prey as there is not a lot of prey at the moment to be hunted. Bramblestar questions Twigbranch's hunting skills upon seeing that she had only brought back one mouse. The she-cat hurriedly exits camp again as she does not want to let down her leader. Stormcloud follows, stammering while Lilyheart angrily stares at Bramblestar as she beckons to Flamepaw to follow her as they will hunt alongside the others.
Later, Finchlight asks Flamepaw what he thinks about when hunting prey. Not answering, the black apprentice asks himself if he will always be practicing for an assessment he'll never pass. His sister chastises his way of thinking, stating that he only failed because ThunderClan standards are much higher than any of the other Clans. Flamepaw humorously thinks that every Clan must think that of themselves. Finchlight notices that something is wrong with her brother, and the black apprentice voices his doubts to her that he doesn't understand why he can't live up to the long line of ancestors he has come from, questioning if that was the reason his mother had abandoned him when he was a kit. Finchlight defends Sparkpelt, stating that she was full of grief when Larksong died, and soon after, she had gotten exiled by the impostor.
Flamepaw wonders if that's why Finchlight passed her assessment first, because she and Sparkpelt had gotten exiled together. The tortoiseshell she-cat brings the conversatoin back on topic, but both of them are distracted by commotion from Highledge. Squirrelflight exclaims to Bramblestar that his decision could leave ThunderClan vulnerable, but the ThunderClan leader defends his statement, saying that it was Crowfeather who was leading the patrol and the both of them are friends with the WindClan deputy.
Squirrelflight continues to try and persuade Bramblestar that the incident was done purposefully and that the vole in question was a ThunderClan vole, but the WindClan warrior took it. The ThunderClan leader defends WindClan, saying that he and Squirrelflight shared a bond with Crowfeather in the journey to the lake territories, and the WindClan deputy was one of the Lights in the Mist. The deputy barks back, saying that regardless, the vole was still a ThunderClan vole, and they cannot allow WindClan to assert dominance over ThunderClan.
After not hearing a response, Squirrelflight states that they should give WindClan an amiable reminder that an event like that cannot happen again, but Bramblestar tells the deputy that he trusts Crowfeather, and he will get some rest. Turning to the rest of the camp, she informs them that she will take a patrol the next day. As some cats give their thoughts about how the ThunderClan leader seemed that he was against this confrontation idea, Squirrelflight backs up her idea, stating that it will not be a confrontation. She then states that she will only take two cats, picking Sparkpelt and Flamepaw for the job. Flamepaw straightens up, thanking the deputy for giving him a seemingly enjoyable task. The black tom asks the ginger she-cat if she was positive that Bramblestar was in favor of the idea, but Squirrelflight hesitantly replies that he will be fine with it.
