Below contains in-depth information for chapter fifteen of River (book). If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Sunbeam, Gullswoop, and Yarrowleaf are on a hunting patrol, catching two blackbirds. As Yarrowleaf goes to fetch her squirrel, Sunbeam and Gullswoop head back to camp. Gullswoop praises Sunbeam's hunting, telling her she should be proud of herself. Sunbeam responds that everyone on the patrol did well, but the white she-cat claims that the former doesn't give herself enough credit. Sunbeam wonders if she's trying to cheer her up, wondering if any other cat had noticed that she and Lightleap hadn't been talking. Gullswoop tells Sunbeam that the latter must be bothered that Blazefire and Lightleap were spending so much time together, but takes it back after Sunbeam tells her that although she and Blazefire weren't spending much time together lately, he's still special to her.
When they reach camp, Sunbeam takes one of the blackbirds she had caught, and looks for Blazefire. She asks Shadowsight if he had seen him, to which he replies that he saw him going on a hunting patrol near the SkyClanborder. Sunbeam settles on a flat rock near the entrance of the camp, waiting for him. When she spots Snaketooth and Whorlpelt entering camp, she demands them to tell her where Blazefire is, and if he is spending time with Lightleap. The two say they are spending time, but just as friends. Sunbeam doesn't believe them, and is about to unleash her anger on them, when she and Shadowsight hear Lightleap yell that Blazefire is injured. Lightleap tells them that as they were catching mice, she dared him to go after some that were in a narrow tunnel. He listened, but rocks ended up falling on top of him. The she-cat takes Sunbeam and Shadowsight to the SkyClan border where Blazefire is lying, unconscious. Sunbeam, Snaketooth, and Lightleap take him back to camp, where Puddleshine is waiting. Blazefire eats the poppy seeds Puddleshine feeds him. When the medicine cats go back into their den, Sunbeam lashes out at Lightleap for spending a lot of time with Blazefire, to which Lightleap responds that the two were just friends.
The next day, Sunbeam walks into the medicine den, where she sees Blazefire, awake. With Puddleshine's permission, she talks to him, saying she scared him. He apologizes, and Sunbeam forgives him, saying he shouldn't have gone in. The tom admits he loves her, but doesn't think the two can be mates, stating that the two were too different. Sunbeam feels hurt, and walks out the den, telling him she thought he was a different cat.
