"It's all this talk of changing the code when it's cats like Tigerstar and Dovewing who will benefit the most. Obviously, I'm not Ashfur. He went much too far in his obsession with the code. But sometimes I think too many cats aren't all that trustworthy, and when that happens, the code is there to help them do the right thing." |

Chapter description[]
- Spireclaw walks into the warriors' den and asks how Sunbeam is doing. He tells her she can't waste her days sulking and convinces the she-cat to live her life, regardless of Lightleap and Blazefire's opinion on her. Sunbeam agrees and leaves the den in hopes of finding something to do. The deputy assigns Sunbeam to join Snowbird, Whorlpelt, and Gullswoop on their hunting patrol. During the hunt, the patrol members excessively praise Sunbeam's hunting skills, which irks Sunbeam as she doesn't want any sympathy from her Clanmates. They later finds Flaxfoot and Hollowspring lamenting the loss of their pigeon in a bramble thicket, and Sunbeam volunteers to retrieve their lost prey despite Snowbird's objections. The thorns dig into her skin as she grabs the pigeon, and her Clanmates send the injured warrior to the medicine den once she is free.
- Shadowsight scolds Sunbeam for her mistake while treating her injuries. When Shadowsight leaves the medicine den, Sunbeam finds Blazefire is also being treated for his injuries. Sunbeam asks the tom if he is in love with Lightleap. Blazefire denies quickly and the two cats agree to be friends again. The next morning, Sunbeam wakes up to her mother Berryheart entering the medicine den. She sympathizes with Sunbeam, telling her Tigerstar's kin does whatever they like. Berryheart reminds Sunbeam the importance of the warrior code, and with it changing, Clan cats have to stay true to themselves. Sunbeam evaluates her friendship with Lightleap, believing that her old friend might not be trustworthy after all.
