"StarClan didn't speak to me at all. They left me a sign instead — a curled feather beside the path that leads down to the Moonpool. You can't get much clearer than that, can you?"

Chapter description[]

Frostpaw heads to the Moonpool with Splashtail as her escort. The medicine cat apprentice doubts her abilities as the two cats make their way to the Moonpool, but she reminds herself that her choices could affect the Clan for generations. Splashtail tries to reassure the young apprentice, but she says nothing. When they arrive, Frostpaw tells Splashtail to wait as she makes her way to the Moonpool. She wishes for the other medicine cats' guidance as she sits at the edge of the water. She closes her eyes and touches the water, in hopes of reaching StarClan.
Frostpaw hears faint noises around her, but nothing distinct. She wonders if StarClan had nothing to say to her. She wakes from her sleep disappointed. On her way back to Splashtail, she notices a white object in the grass. As she gets closer, she notices a curled feather sitting peacefully. She believes this must be a sign from StarClan, that Curlfeather would become the next leader of RiverClan. Frostpaw happily returns to Splashtail and the two make their way back to camp.
Frostpaw reveals the sign she has received to Mothwing. Mothwing doubts her apprentice's conclusion. Mothwing reveals that he brother Hawkfrost had faked signs, including a sign to make herself a medicine cat. Mothwing tells Frostpaw to sleep and think about her sign a little more. As the apprentice falls asleep, she dreams of the Moonpool covered in white curled feathers and a voice tells her to have faith in herself.
