- Mothwing asks Frostpaw if she received another dream from StarClan. She tells her mentor that she was at the Moonpool again and it was covered in curled feathers. Mothwing tells Frostpaw they must get ready to announce the news to the Clan.
- Mothwing calls a Clan meeting on the Highstump and offers the stage to Frostpaw. Frostpaw announces that her vision reveals Curlfeather will become RiverClan's new leader. Her Clanmates share doubtful glances, and Owlnose asks the medicine cat if she feels comfortable with this decision. Mothwing reminds the Clan that StarClan will have to give Curlfeather her nine lives, and if they don't, Frostpaw will be wrong. The Clan eventually accepts Frostpaw's decision.
- That night, Frostpaw and Curlfeather walk past the horseplace to head for the Moonpool. Mother and daughter comfort each other, and Frostpaw knows her mother will make a great leader. As the two cats walk up the moorland, dogs abruptly arrive and chase at them in a fury. Curlfeather orders her daughter to climb some nearby trees to escape as she dodges branches and bushes in hopes of losing the dogs. Frostpaw grabs onto the nearest tree and scrapes on the branch. She turns her head to find her mother being trampled by the dogs. Curlfeather tells Frostpaw to keep RiverClan safe and trust no cat. before disappearing under a swarm of angry dogs.
- Frostpaw safely touches the ground once she doesn't hear dogs. When the apprentice reaches camp, she tells her Clanmates what happened. The camp erupts into hysteria as Frostpaw remembers her mother's final words. Her littermates Mistpaw and Graypaw comfort her as they fall asleep together. Mothwing tells Frostpaw that Curlfeather's body has been recovered, and that the Clan will sit vigil for her. Mallownose and Splashtail wonder about the state of the Clan and suggest Frostpaw return to the Moonpool. Frostpaw fears the idea, until Duskfur dismisses the plan. Mothwing tells the cats that it might be time to ask the other Clans for help.
