Chapter description[]

Frostpaw and Mothwing sit in camp waiting for the return of Reedwhisker's patrol. The patrol enters the camp with Podlight, Fognose, Splashtail, and Curlfeather. Mothwing asks the patrol where their deputy was, but Podlight asks the medicine cat if he was in camp. Mothwing announces the death of RiverClan's leader, shocking the patrol. The Clan remembers Mistystar's accomplishments as their leader.
Mothwing interrupts saying that Reedwhisker will need to claim his nine lives at the Moonpool. The patrol explains they had lost track of him and the rain had made his scent hard to find. Mothwing suggests sending search parties for the deputy, and she orders Owlnose, Havenpelt, and Lizardtail to search for Reedwhisker. Mothwing then prepares for Mistystar's vigil but chokes and disappears into her den, overcome with grief. Frostpaw leaves to check on her mentor, and she consoles Mothwing. Mothwing asks Frostpaw to contact her old friend through StarClan, but Frostpaw admits it doesn't work that way. The apprentice tries anyway. Frostpaw recalls her memories of the day in her dreams until a sound rings through. She recognizes Mistystar's voice telling her to move on, but can't make out anything through the fog. As she wakes up, Mothwing asks her if there was any contact. Frostpaw relays the message to her mentor, which seems to comfort her.
