Chapter description[]
- River Ripple and the other leaders share a dream with the spirit cats speaking with them at the four trees. Despite having no dead to mourn, Frost, Petal, and Fox ask if River Ripple will instead listen to them. River Ripple agrees, now understanding that the mountain cats' are also his own. Frost, Petal, and Fox angrily urge River Ripple to fulfill his destiny and grow and spread like the Blazing Star, or else he will lose everything. The next morning, River Ripple is puzzled how he can achieve that when Shattered Ice and Dappled Pelt arrive asking to join his group: Tall Shadow and Thunder have split their group, with Tall Shadow leaving moor for the pines and Thunder returning to his father in the forest. The pair have decided to live by the river since there are too many bad memories on the moor. Shattered Ice and Dappled Pelt are warmly welcomed into the group, though River Ripple cuts off Hollow's question about gaining more territory to support their growing group.
- Dappled Pelt and Shattered Ice quickly settle into the group. A quarter-moon later, Shattered Ice explains to River Ripple about living in the cold and bleak mountains. In turn, River Ripple elaborates about living with the park cats, though he realizes that his former parkmates were slowly drifting from his memory. They hear a cry nearby and discover a brown tabby she-cat wailing. River Ripple orders Shattered Ice to fetch Dappled Pelt. As the she-cat continues to moan in pain, River Ripple asks for her name. She introduces herself as Kite, and River Ripple sits by her side until Dappled Pelt and Shattered Ice arrive. The healer realizes that Kite is having kits, and the loner explains how she was hoping to find them so her kits can grow up someplace safe. As Shattered Ice leaves to prepare a nest for Kite at their camp, River Ripple grooms the newborn kits as Dappled Pelt helps Kite. She gives birth to three kits: two tom-kits and a she-kit. Shattered Ice returns with Dew, and the two explain how Night and Mist are preparing a nest for their newest members. River Ripple allows for Kite and her kits to join, though he wonders with a pang that he might never have a litter with Flutter.
