  • Monsters arrive at the park, with Ripple noting that they looked different to the ones he has seen before.
    • Arc moves in front of him, telling him to get back while Shine, Dart, and Flutter remain unmoving as well.
    • Ripple tries asking what they are, but is cut off by the monsters breaking into the park and Arc pushing him into a run.
    • He wonders how they could feel nothing as they destroy the park.
  • Ripple spots Flutter and the others unmoving as he sees Twolegs approaching them.
    • He notices that the Twolegs have webs and they are hunting.
    • Ripple prepares to save his friends but Arc stops him as the others are captured.
  • A monster comes towards Ripple and Arc as the former laments the life he could have had with Flutter.
    • Ripple falls into the river as he tries to escape the monster.
    • As he struggles in the water he manages to clamber onto a log as the park disappears from his view.
  • Ripple clings onto the log as darkness overwhelms him.
    • He dreams of the park with Flutter.
    • The tom asks her to be his mate as the two become close.
    • However, he realizes that her soft touch is bark and realizes he is still on the log.
  • Ripple dreads that Flutter is gone forever as the river continues to take him further and further from the park.
  • He wonders if he did find his way back would the home he knew still be there.

[]

  • Ripple remains on the log as the day passes into night.
    • He desperately clings to the log as he tries to sleep due to his exhaustion.
  • He awakes again as the sun has barely risen.
  • The river becomes choppy as Ripple sees that the shorelines were growing closer than they were before.
    • He thinks that once he hits dry land he would reunite with Arc and rescue Dart, Flutter, and Shine from the Twolegs.
    • Ripple thinks of his promise to find Flutter, knowing she would be waiting for him.
  • He hears a distant rumble, thinking it is thunder at first. However he notices the sky is blue, nor could it be rain or wind as the trees alongside the bank remained still.
    • He realizes with dread that the river disappears ahead of him and that the noise was a waterfall.
    • In an attempt to save himself, he tries to steer the log away but is unable due to the river's current.
  • The log goes over the waterfall and the tom tries to cling to it.
    • Ripple comes loose from the log as he hits the water below.
    • He panics quickly but realizes he is still alive.
    • The tom swims to the surface of the water and finds the log.
  • Ripple returns to the log as it is swept gently to a riverbank.
    • He lets go of the log and heads to dry land.
    • He collapses as he struggles to the grass and thanks the river for saving him.

[]

  • Ripple wakes up, unsure how much time has passed since leaving the log.
    • He takes in his surrounds, noting that water meadows gave way to the forest on the shore, and on the far side he could see pastureland give way to moorland.
    • The tom decides to stay by the river, despite the heat.
  • He tries to catch fish in the river, recalling how to hunt mice and likening the experience to that.
    • Ripple struggles to catch the fish, despite their sluggish nature.
    • He grows frustrated and the fish soon swim away from him. Unbeknownst to him, he was being watched by someone.
    • She playfully teases him as he concedes that he did not know how to fish.
  • The she-cat introduces herself as Night, and asks Ripple his name.
    • He hesitates and introduces himself as River Ripple, the addition to his name coming from the perilous journey that had brought him to the new territory.
  • Night politely welcomes him as he asks if he can stay near the river.
    • She tells him it was not up to her if he stayed, and that if he wanted to he just had to not steal prey from others.
    • River Ripple asks about the other cats, but Night keeps the conversation short.
    • He pushes as he questions why each cat does not help each other out, as Night simply seems puzzled by his suggestion.
  • River Ripple changes the subject and asks what else he can hunt.
    • The she-cat tells him there are frogs and birds, but that fish are the best thing to catch.
    • He laments that they are hard to catch and Night offers to teach him how to hunt fish.
    • He accepts her offer and Night goes to fetch her brother, Mist.
  • Night soon returns with the other tom as River Ripple tries to cool down from the greenleaf sun.
    • River Ripple introduces himself to Mist, and the latter is amused by the tom's name.
  • The she-cat explains the first rule of fishing is to wait.
    • River Ripple quietly asks about the silver fish, asking if it is a trout.
    • Mist replies and tells him its a carp, noting the shape and that it was alone instead of with others.
  • River Ripple watches Night stay still before rapidly moving to catch the fish.
    • She asks if he wants to try to catch one, but the tom states he would rather eat what had just been caught.
    • Night urges him to try catch his own as his reactions would be sharper.
  • River Ripple attempts to catch a trout but misses, which frustrates him.
    • He blames the sunshine, which Night agrees with and explains it makes it harder for the fish to see them too.
  • Night encourages him to try again.
    • The silver tom attempts again with a shoal of loaches.
    • He manages to snag one, however, it frees itself from his claws and falls back into the river.
    • River Ripple watches as Night and Mist walk along the shore and wonders if they had given up on him.
    • Night tells him they should have started somewhere easier.
  • They head towards the stepping stones, which surprises River Ripple as at first he believes Night to be walking on water.
    • Night explains they stretch across to the far shore.
    • Mist adds that they are useful for crossing the river without getting wet.
      • His sister chimes in again that the stepping stones can be fished from, but the current around them is dangerous.
  • River Ripple tries fishing again and posts a carp.
    • This time he manages to catch it and brings it ashore to Night and Mist.
    • The tom eats his catch as the siblings ask about where he had come from.
    • River Ripple explains the park and that he had traveled from there on a log.
    • Mist questions why he did not swim, and River Ripple tells them he cannot swim.
      • This shocks the siblings and Night mentions that she would not have had him fish from the stepping stones if she had known that.
  • Night asks then why he had traveled to the forest.
    • He explains that he did not have a choice.
    • She says that his kin must miss him, and he states he does not have kin but that his parkmates would be worried about him.
    • River Ripple thinks about Moth, Stoat, Squirrel, and Flutter.
    • He asks if Mist and Night had mates, which makes Night shut down a little.
      • She explains that she had a mate and kits, which makes River Ripple curious but he does not pry.
  • The subject changes back to River Ripple heading back to the park.
    • He explains to his companions that though the park was destroyed, he still wants to find his parkmates.
    • Night, as she gets up to leave, comments that it could be safer for him to let them go and remain in the forest.
    • River Ripple notes that her advice was smart but he doubts he could follow it due to the love of his former life.
    • He decides to rest for a few days and then would try and return to the park no matter what.

[]

  • River Ripple admits to himself that he has come to enjoy the wildness of the riverbanks, and the flavor of its fish, despite his initial distaste.
    • Even though plenty of mice lived in the surrounding fields, he notes that he would rather indulge in the water prey.
  • The tom heads for his den, which he had built into the reeds.
    • In his den, River Ripple sleeps at night and occasionally during the day.
    • He also uses the secluded area to meditate, following Arc's teachings daily.
  • Hunting so many fish leads River Ripple to overeat and struggle with bellyaches.
    • He collects watermint to alleviate the pains after discovering that eating a few stalks after meals helped with digestion.
  • As he walks over the stepping stones, River Ripple recalls how the newly-lowered water level has made fishing easier.
    • Still, Night has told him that he must start learning to swim at some point.
    • The idea of the stepping stones likely becoming fully submerged and the river getting deeper by leaf-bare is disquieting to River Ripple, but he insists to himself that he would be gone by then.
    • He repeats that he is not planning on staying in the temporary home and muses on his previous attempts to get back to the park, one of which ended in a leg injury after he had fallen from hanging rocks.
    • River Ripple thinks back on a couple of his plans; his continuous failures ultimately led to his admittance that for now, he was effectively stuck beside the river and therefore it would be best to take advantage of his stay.
    • He hopes that Flutter has kept faith in his eventual return and he thinks about how much he misses the she-cat, who has been recently appearing in his dreams.
  • River Ripple turns as Night pads into the clearing.
    • She drops a gift of prey on the ground, shaking out her soaked pelt.
    • River Ripple asks why she does not use the path to stay dry and Night responds that swimming is quicker.
    • The tom questions Mist's whereabouts.
    • Night tells him that her brother has a bellyache.
  • River Ripple offers her some watermint for Mist and explains to her its purpose.
    • Night gratefully accepts before shifting the conversation to River Ripple's continued desire to leave the river.
    • Upon hearing her numerous questions and casual references to possible dangers, River Ripple suspects that she is trying to discourage him from departing.
      • He thinks to himself that potentially, Night and Mist had grown to enjoy his company.
  • Deep down, he wishes one of the river cats would offer to assist him in his journey.
    • He pushes the thought away by declaring that he would never forgive himself if dangers actually did arise to put Night or Mist in harm's way.
  • Night stands up and tells River Ripple that she is leaving.
    • He is upset to hear this, but notes that she is a loner at heart and therefore it is understandable that she did not stay long.
    • As she departs, River Ripple thanks her for the prey that she had given him.
  • Over the next several days, cold weather continues to grip the clearing and the shore beyond.
    • Rain hits River Ripple's face as he crouches by the riverbed and catches sight of a carp.
    • The fish eventually reaches the shallows, and he prepares to strike but is distracted by a frustrated voice repeatedly asking what he is doing.
    • Still, River Ripple manages to ignore the voice and catch the carp.
  • A bedraggled-looking tom, the cat who had been calling to him, appears in front of River Ripple with a glare.
  • The stranger insists angrily that this part of the river belongs to him.
    • River Ripple tells him that he has never known the river to belong to any cat, and asks who the messy-furred tom is.
    • He introduces himself as Hawk while maintaining a tone that River Ripple deems unnecessarily hostile.
  • River Ripple takes notice of Hawk's skinny frame and reasons that perhaps if he helped the tom, he would drop the hostility.
    • Despite Hawk's indignance, River Ripple catches a shoal and flicks it towards him.
    • Hawk immediately refuses the prey, however, insisting that he doesn't want his help.
    • As he leaves the scrawny tom, River Ripple reflects that this encounter had been the first sign of trouble during his otherwise-peaceful time here.
  • The river flows over the stepping stones after the passing of a few more days, and rain relentlessly falls.
    • The heightened water forces River Ripple to fish at shallower parts of the river.
  • He finds newly-flowing shallows that are fishable, but Hawk's accusatory snarl causes River Ripple's heart to drop.
    • The tom's clumsy attempt at fishing spikes River Ripple's curiosity and it becomes clear to him that Hawk needs help.
    • When he again offers his assistance, Hawk growls that he doesn't want any, which River Ripple respects.
  • Over the following days, River Ripple ignores Hawk's demands for him to leave.
    • He contemplates visiting Night and Mist, but the rising water and cold temperatures leave him confined on his side of the river.
  • One day at the hunting shallows, River Ripple catches sight of Hawk, who is now flanked by three large toms.
    • River Ripple refuses to back down, instead voicing his fury at the cowardice behind Hawk's actions.
    • A satisfied-sounding Hawk throws matching insults at the silver tom.
  • The encounter quickly devolves into a physical fight, one that River Ripple is clearly outnumbered in.
    • He recalls how few battle moves Arc had taught him as a young cat in the park.
  • The three toms easily exchange blows against the helpless tom before Hawk triumphantly tells them to back off.
    • Before they leave, Hawk warns the terribly-wounded River Ripple that he now knows what would happen if he keeps refusing to stay away.
  • Weak with pain, River Ripple reflects how he had done nothing to deserve this.
    • He sees Flutter in his dreams after slipping into unconsciousness.
    • Upon waking, he cleans his aching wounds.
    • Exhausted by the effort, he falls asleep after finishing.
  • Hunger gnaws at River Ripple's belly the following morning.
    • He recognizes the need to hunt but refuses to ever return to the shallows where he had been attacked.
    • His attempts to hunt land prey lead nowhere, which only weakens his remaining determination.
  • River Ripple soon spots a line of Twoleg dens past the meadow.
    • He hesitates, but his weak and miserable state has left him desperate for any source of food.
    • The tom, having made his choice, admits to himself that he has no other option but to head for the dens.
