"My littermates said I was too small…too weak. But I have proven them wrong. I've learned how to be strong…how to live for blood. Because that's the key. The only answer. I am leader of BloodClan. I am Scourge. And I have won!"
— Scourge thinking about his victory over Tigerstar in The Rise of Scourge, page 82

Scourge is a small black tom with one white paw,[1] ice-blue eyes,[5] glossy fur,[6] and a torn left ear.[7] He has a purple[8] collar studded with teeth from dogs and cats,[9] and claws reinforced with dogs' teeth.[10]

Scourge was the founder and the first leader of BloodClan. He was born as Tiny to Quince and Jake along with his siblings, Socks and Ruby, as a kittypet. After a run-in with Tigerpaw that nearly killed him, Tiny fled to the Twolegplace. He attempted to break free of his collar with a dog's tooth, which became embedded in his collar and resulted in him lying about killing a dog to gain the respect of the Twolegplace cats. He renamed himself Scourge, and rose as their leader.

Moons later, Tigerstar came to BloodClan with an offer to Scourge in exchange for territory. Scourge agreed, but withdrew his cats from the potential fight with the Clans after learning of Tigerstar's treachery. In retaliation, Scourge murdered Tigerstar when he attacked, and aspired to conquer the forest. Scourge was killed in battle by Firestar after the ThunderClan leader was revived. With their leader dead, BloodClan retreated, and was reduced to only a memory among the forest cats.

The Prophecies Begin

"You see what happens to cats who defy BloodClan? Your friend here thought he could control us. He was wrong."
—Scourge after killing Tigerstar The Darkest Hour, page 125
Scourge is recruited by Tigerstar to help the ShadowClan leader take over the Clans by force, and leads BloodClan's cats to their territories. He and BloodClan are introduced by Tigerstar to the other Clans, though Scourge's cats refuse to fight under Tigerstar's command due to their loyalty to their leader. Firestar reveals all of Tigerstar's crimes to him and the Clans, and due to this, Scourge refuses to fight until he has thought it through. Enraged, Tigerstar attacks Scourge, but the latter outmaneuvers him and rips open Tigerstar's throat, chest and stomach, causing him to lose all nine of his lives at once. He gives Firestar an ultimatum; either surrender the forest to BloodClan or fight for it. Scourge leads BloodClan against the united force of LionClan, formed from all four of the forest Clans. He takes Firestar's first life, but is then killed by the ginger tom upon his revival. With the fall of their leader, BloodClan admits defeat and retreats.

Stand-Alone Manga

"I must have ice in my veins to do what I just did. I expect the ice to melt...But it doesn't. It just gets colder and colder...And I welcome it."
—Scourge The Rise of Scourge, page 71
In The Rise of Scourge, Scourge is born as Tiny to Quince, a kittypet. He lives in torment from his siblings, Ruby and Socks, and after they tell him unwanted kittens get thrown in the river, he escapes, not wanting to meet that fate. Tiny finds himself in the forest and is happened upon by a patrol consisting of Tigerpaw, Thistleclaw, and Bluefur. Tigerpaw is instructed to attack Tiny for trespassing and the small tom survives only due to Bluefur's intervention. Tiny escapes and vows to never to forget the tabby apprentice.
Never forget.TRoS

Tigerpaw's last words for Tiny.

Arriving in the Twolegplace, Tiny is told he is a kittypet and, in an attempt to remove his collar, gets a dog tooth lodged in it. He lies to the rogues that he fought and killed a dog so that he can eat. His story spreads and Tiny is taken by Bone and Brick to fight another dog that is causing cats to go hungry. He goes to fight the dog, but, it is scared of his shadow and runs off. He renames himself Scourge from this moment on and is named as the leader of the Twolegplace cats.
Securing his lead, Scourge kills a rogue to prove to his cats that he was a fit leader. He later banishes his littermates when they turn to him for help. Scourge meets with Tigerstar and Boulder, the tabby tom asking for his help. Scourge agrees and takes his cats to the forest and following Tigerstar's betrayal, the tom kills his old enemy, having never forgotten what he did to him many moons prior.

Interesting facts

  • Scourge's Warriors App profile notes that he hated the dog teeth that studded his collar. He felt that they smelled awful and pressed on his throat, making swallowing difficult. However, Scourge put up with the discomfort because he knew it made him look more fearsome.[11]
  • Scourge is described to have a 'brittle and high-pitched' voice, mentioned to be like the splintering of ice.[12]

Author statements

  • Scourge has been mistakenly said to be Violet's littermate.[15]

Killed victims

"He sounded like a cat who had enjoyed killing."
—Lionblaze's thoughts on Scourge Sunrise, page 32

This list shows the victims Scourge has killed:

"I try not to let it show, but it really hits me: nobody here has ever asked me what my name is. And you know what? It isn't 'Tiny'. Not anymore."
—Scourge about his name The Rise of Scourge, pages 57-58
As a kit, Scourge is extremely resentful of his size as it is the source of his siblings' torment and roughhousing.[22] However, despite Ruby and Socks' teasing, he maintains a curious and courageous attitude to exploring, willingly venturing out into the forest without his mother or siblings. His inquisitive attitude, in turn, is easily put down by his family.[23] After a fair amount of torment from his siblings, they eventually scare him enough to make him run away from their home. His gullibility makes itself evident through in his automatic trust in their words.[24] Upon leaving home for his own safety, he is met with nothing but harshness and cruelty.[25] After being attacked and almost killed, it is only by the mercy of one warrior that he escapes. His first encounter with Clan cats has a lasting effect on Scourge's mentality.[26]
A liar.TRoS

Socks and Ruby doubt their brother's stories.

As he grows, Tiny sheds a lot of his former personality upon learning that life is harsh. He sees it fit to lie to other cats in order to survive.[27] However, his actions have consequences as the alley cats begin to see him as a solution to their problems, such as dogs and other rogues.[28] As these occurrences take place, he gains their respect, and renames himself from Tiny to Scourge in order to completely remake himself.[29] Scourge secures his place as a leader amongst the alley cats after he kills a rogue. His experiences cause a shift in his attitudes as he becomes less naive. He becomes colder and unnervingly at peace with his actions.[30]
Despite his outwardly cold demeanour,[29] Scourge shows some mercy to his estranged kin, such as feeding them once, and thinking of them on occasion.[31] As time passes, Scourge becomes absorbed with his desire for revenge to be satisfied. He puts aside his grudge with Tigerstar to follow along with the other tom's proposition for BloodClan gaining territory in the forest. Scourge knows that if he wants to exact his revenge he must time it well,[32] and he evidently does.[10] However, by getting his revenge, Scourge starts the path that would become his own downfall. He becomes cocky and sure of himself against the other Clans, and more importantly, Firestar. His lack of moral code,[33] would evidently end his reign of terror.[3]

Socks and Ruby

"I hate being small. All I want is for my brother and sister to like me. I'd grow if I could."
—Tiny wanting acceptance The Rise of Scourge, page 5
Socks and Ruby are Scourge's littermates. As kits, they would exclude him from their games and make fun of his size. They openly showed their dislike of Scourge to their mother as well.[34] Ruby, at times, is worse than Socks as she cruelly tells Scourge that unwanted kits are thrown in the river.[35] Her statement acts as a catalyst for him running away and starting a new life away from his family.[36]
At some point, Socks and Ruby's Twolegs abandon them and the two seek out their brother. The pair beg him for help and food, pushing the point that they are littermates and blood. Scourge tells what blood means to him, albeit through his perspective, but, sees that they care more about the food he gives them. He orders Bone and Brick to take them away, stating they are not welcome in BloodClan territory, with Ruby appearing to glance back at him solemnly as she and Socks are escorted away.[31]

"Mama doesn't say it…But I think she likes them better than me."
—Tiny thinking about Quince's thoughts on her kits The Rise of Scourge, page 14
Quince is his mother and she showed him love and affection whenever she could. She would often berate her other two kits for making fun of him and not including him.[37] But, Scourge suspected that she loved them more than him.[38] She is the one who tells him about the forest and how his father explored it.[39] After he runs away and is attacked, Scourge thinks of home and how he can't go back. He thinks of his mother and says goodbye to her.[36] He thinks of her description of the forest cats and takes the word she uses as his new name after he remakes himself.[40]

"You'll never forget me."
—Tigerpaw to Tiny The Rise of Scourge, page 33
Scourge is haunted by his first encounter with Tigerstar, then Tigerpaw. He was attacked by the huge tom under orders from his mentor. The attack was only stopped by another warrior before he was left to run.[25] Tigerpaw tells the young tom that he will never forget him, which proves to be true over time as Scourge's thoughts often wander to the tabby.[41] Scourge doesn't feel content with his life until he believes he has his revenge on the tabby.[42]
In the end, Scourge is able to exact his revenge when Tigerpaw, now known as Tigerstar, is brought to him by a former BloodClan member. Tigerstar offers him a deal, and Scourge takes it and accompanies the tom back to the forest to assist in Tigerstar's plan.[5] However, the impending conflict goes awry when Firestar reveals Tigerstar's crimes to the Clans and Scourge.[43] Scourge picks his moment right and takes Tigerstar's nine lives, finally getting his revenge on the tom.[10]

"Oh yes. Blood is everything. But the only blood I'm interested in flows from my enemies. Look around you! These cats are bathed in blood. It soaks their fur and laps at their paws. This is why we survive! We are BLOODCLAN!"
—Scourge to his littermates The Rise of Scourge, page 74

"We are taking over this territory now. I shall rule the forest as well as the town. But I understand that you may need some time to reflect on this. You have three days to leave—or meet my Clan in battle. I shall wait for your decision at dawn on the fourth day."
—Scourge to ThunderClan and WindClan The Darkest Hour, page 235

"[…] Brambleclaw remembered the clearing at Fourtrees, the blood pouring out onto the grass as Tigerstar lost all nine lives at once. He saw Scourge looking down at his twitching body with cold triumph. Was that what Hawkfrost and Tigerstar wanted him to become?"
—Brambleclaw remembering Tigerstar's death Sunset, pages 295-296
