"The story is never the same twice, and parts grow uncertain, or they become suddenly clear in the telling." This article contains information mainly from the 2007 field guide, Secrets of the Clans. While based on canonical information, the book has been repeatedly retconned as the series progressed, and thus its credibility is questioned. |

Chapter description[]
- Many moons in the past, the forest is an untamed land with bountiful lands that would soon be the home to cats. These early settlers were not yet Clans and instead fight constantly over land and prey, fearful their resources may run out. One night, under a full moon, these cats fought each other and loses were great while the wounded tended to each other's injuries. However, while they recovered, spirits visted them and told them to unite or die. Four cats rose from the remaining living cats, a tall black she-cat, silver-gray tom, brown she-cat, a large ginger tom, rise and challenge each other for who will lead the forest.
- The spirits, in anger, cover the full moon, and remind the four cats that the forest holds enough room for them all to live together. One spirit, a tabby, tells them to each find cats like themselves and set borders to ensure peace. Another spirit, a white tom, adds that they will watch from Silverpelt and continue to guide each of them from their dreams. He also explains that they are to meet under the moon, at the four great oak trees in peace and that no blood will be shed and if any is, the spirits will be angry. The tabby spirit speaks once again, announcing the four cats as warriors and that they must abide to the warrior code and if they do, they will be rewarded with inner nobility and justice. Thunder speaks his thanks, and is followed by the other three leaders and they each take their leave to follow the spirit cats' advice.
- River finds more cats that are willing to fish for prey, while Shadow found herself cats that were born nighttime hunters with smarts and quick claws. As for Thunder, he found himself hunters that could track through the thickest undergrowth, and Wind found herself the fastest cats who loved the open space of the moorland. As the moons followed, the four groups each had enough prey and space to sustain themselves and they continued to grow. The leaders followed their promise to the spirit cats to meet in a truce at the four oaks at a full moon. While peace was not always an idea for the Clans, they remain loyal to their warrior ancestors and the code they hold to help guide them in their daily lives.
