"The story is never the same twice, and parts grow uncertain, or they become suddenly clear in the telling." This article contains information mainly from the 2007 field guide, Secrets of the Clans. While based on canonical information, the book has been repeatedly retconned as the series progressed, and thus its credibility is questioned. |
- Below contains in-depth information for the Other Animals chapter of Secrets of the Clans. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Chapter description[]
[]
- Foxes have red fur, bushy tails, sharp teeth, pointed noses, and look somewhat like dogs. They live alone or with their cubs in dens, which are often in sandy ground. Foxes are hostile, and while they do not eat cats, they still kill not just for prey but also for pleasure. They have an unpleasant scent and hunt mostly at night.
[]
- Badgers are large and have short black fur with a white stripe on their muzzles. They have small eyes, sharp claws, and powerful shoulders. They live alone or with their kits in caves or tunnels, and have a unique smell. Badgers sometimes prey on young cat kits and can trample or bite their victims. They also have extremely powerful jaws. However, Midnight is a badger at the sun-drown-place who is not hostile to cats and has a connection with StarClan. She can communicate with cats and foxes, and passed on the message that the Clans must leave the forest.
[]
- Dogs have long or short fur in many colors, and can also be a wide range of sizes. They are loud and chase cats, and mostly live with Twolegs. Wild dogs can live anywhere, such as those that lived in the caves below Snakerocks. They have sharp teeth and are fast, although some cats think they aren’t smart enough to be truly dangerous. However, packs of dogs are always feared, such as those that injured Brightheart and killed Swiftpaw.
[]
- Birds of prey include hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls. They have sharp beaks and talons, and nest in trees or cliffs. These birds have sharp eyes and swoop down for prey, such as Snowkit, who was carried off by a hawk after the forest fire. Hawks and eagles hunt during the day while owls hunt at night. The Tribe has created ways to catch these birds.
[]
- Horses, sheep, and cows are farm creatures with four legs. Horses are tall and fast, have long manes and tails, and pounding hooves. Sheep look like small clouds, and cows are black and white or brown and their hooves should be avoided. These animals live on large fields or in Twoleg barns. They are mostly harmless, but can trample cats.
[]
- Rats are rodents with brown fur and beady eyes and are not much larger than kits. They have long, naked tails and sharp teeth. Rats live in places where they can find Twoleg food, such as the Carrionplace. They live in packs, and while they aren’t dangerous individually, their numbers can be overwhelming. Rat bites can cause infection, such as the rat that contaminated ShadowClan under Nightstar’s leadership.
[]
- Twolegs are tall, smooth-skinned, and have some fur on their heads. They live in large, boxy dens with hard roofs and floors that are surrounded by gardens and fences. Twolegs are also called Nofurs or Upwalkers, and they travel in monsters and like dogs. They should be avoided, as they can be very unpredictable.
