- ShadowClan has gathered in front of a cave to wait for Fringewhisker, who is required to get out without guidance, as Berryheart and Dovewing have used onion scent to keep her from tracking herself. Sunbeam explains to Nightheart that Fringewhisker needs to learn how to navigate the darkness calmly, and warns him that his task will be just as difficult. Berryheart asks Tigerstar how much longer they should wait, and just as he seems ready to declare Fringewhisker's failure, Sunbeam detects her scent. Fringewhisker emerges at last, terrified, and Tigerstar announces her as an official ShadowClan member, to Berryheart's irritation. As ShadowClan welcomes Fringewhisker, Tigerstar asks Berryheart about Nightheart's next task, and while she says that speed will be involved, she refuses to elaborate. When they return to camp, more cats welcome Fringewhisker, while others, like Yarrowleaf and Whorlpelt, are annoyed.
- Sunbeam and Nightheart retreat to the warriors' den, where Sunbeam warns him to be relaxed for his next task. Nightheart expresses confidence, which irritates her, and she questions his lack of anxiety. He reminds her of the effort he has put forth to prove himself, and he tells her about how Berryheart told him that Sunbeam never recovered from her love for Blazefire. She reassures him that he is the cat she wants, and when she doubts that he feels the same, Nightheart again points out the toil he is going through for her and says that he does not care what anyone thinks except her. Sunbeam apologizes, feeling guilty, and they settle down to sleep. However, Nightheart alerts her that Berryheart is leaving with several Clanmates, and they decide to follow.
