- Leaving camp, Nightheart and Sunbeam follow Berryheart and her followers toward RiverClan, taking a different path to keep from being detected when they return. When Sunbeam steps on a thorn, Nightheart worries that Berryheart could have him kicked out of ShadowClan if they are caught. The group stops in a clearing, and Nightheart and Sunbeam hide. Nightheart wonders if they are attacking RiverClan, but Sunbeam dismisses the idea. The group sets off again, leading Nightheart and Sunbeam to the greenleaf Twolegplace by a patch of Thunderpath, near the RiverClan border. After a long wait, Sunbeam alerts to someone's approach, and Nightheart scents RiverClan before Splashtail, Duskfur, and Mallownose emerge and approach Berryheart's group. Sunbeam notes their hatred for ShadowClan's occupation of RiverClan, and the pair wonder if the two groups will fight.
- However, Splashtail greets Berryheart respectfully, and the two agree that Tigerstar is wrong to occupy RiverClan. Berryheart asks about finding a medicine cat, and Splashtail suggests that he can help StarClan with that and assures her that he has a cat in mind to influence. Berryheart says that they need to get Tigerstar to leave RiverClan, unnerving Nightheart, who accidentally alerts her upon stepping on a leaf. He tells Sunbeam that they need to leave, and once they see that they cannot hear the group anymore, she agrees. They discuss Splashtail's plan to find a false medicine cat, acknowledging that things would be easier for RiverClan without ShadowClan's interference. Sunbeam decides to speak with Berryheart before taking the issue to Tigerstar, and they head home, with Nightheart wondering if ShadowClan is just as unstable as ThunderClan.
