"Do you want me to be a medicine cat or something? Because, to be honest, I'm kind of relieved not to be anymore. And if I were a medicine cat, we couldn't be mates."

Chapter description[]

Frostpaw is training with her mentor, Harelight, practicing battle moves. She performs a move perfectly, and Harelight is very impressed. She turns around at the voice of her brother, Graypaw, cheering her on. She sees him and Mistpaw watching her training with their mentors, Breezeheart and Icewing, to her embarrassment. The three littermates hope they can become warriors at the same time, and their mentors encourage them. As they head home, Frostpaw is pleased, wondering why Curlfeather had ever thought she should be a medicine cat and fantasizing about becoming Splashtail's mate. They meet Splashtail and Lizardtail, who are hunting, and Splashtail seems unenthusiastic about Frostpaw's training. As he and Lizardtail prepare to return to camp with their catch, Splashtail steps on a sharp piece of grit, which Frostpaw removes and treats at his request. To Frostpaw's frustration, Splashtail, Graypaw, and Mistpaw comment that they would prefer her to be a medicine cat, though they apologize when Harelight says that she should be left alone.
While her siblings and their mentors go back to camp, Frostpaw stays to fish with Splashtail. Excited that they can be mates now that she will be a warrior, Frostpaw prods for his approval, but he snaps at her and focuses on fishing. He misses a fish, but Frostpaw manages to catch it, and he seems frustrated by this, though he apologizes for snapping. He suggests that he may be able to accept her becoming a warrior and being her mate, but insists that she is better off as a medicine cat, and she reminds him that her visions were false. Despite her protests, Splashtail remains steadfast in his opinion, encouraging her to take time to see if being a warrior is right. Frostpaw snaps again, saying that Curlfeather must have simply been eager for her to be a medicine cat. Splashtail's mind is not changed, however, and after reminding her of Curlfeather's love, he leaves with his prey, and Frostpaw thinks that he simply needs time.
