"So, StarClan must want RiverClan to contact them directly. That's why it's so important for RiverClan to find their own way to reach StarClan. Each Clan should be in control of their own destiny. After all, their Clanmates still bear the scars—in their bodies and their hearts—from when they were under the control of Darktail." |

Chapter description[]
- Relaxing in camp, Sunbeam observes her mother speaking with her followers and worries about what she and Nightheart had heard the previous night. Hesitantly, she begins to approach, but Nightheart stops her, uncertain about taking action and concerned that Berryheart may retaliate against him. Sunbeam promises not to mention him and he relents. She asks her mother to go for a walk with her and takes her to the Twoleg halfbridge, where she confronts Berryheart and asks about her and Splashtail's plans. Berryheart snaps at her for having spied on them, arguing that she only wishes to get ShadowClan out of RiverClan and that, despite Tigerstar's attempts to avoid conflict, it may still come about if he has not left RiverClan by the next Gathering.
- When Sunbeam does not respond, Berryheart persists, telling her that it is necessary to prevent bloodshed and that Bramblestar and Harestar may still agree to help Leafstar in battle against ShadowClan. Sunbeam inquires about the other medicine cats, to which Berryheart reports that StarClan offered no advice on RiverClan, except that they disapprove of Tigerstar's actions. She uses this to justify her group's plotting, though Sunbeam still disagrees with it. Berryheart goes on to say that Tigerstar disregarded StarClan's disapproval and suggests that RiverClan should control its own fate, recalling how she had supported Darktail and suffered for it, swearing to protect ShadowClan. Sunbeam still disagrees with Berryheart's actions, and, believing Sunbeam will tell Tigerstar, Berryheart insists that she is protecting their Clan from war. Sunbeam relents, though she still has doubts, and they return to camp, where Sunbeam decides to confide in Nightheart.
