Chapter description[]
- Nightheart inwardly struggles with whether or not to tell Tigerstar about Berryheart's plans with Splashtail, though he promises not to say anything since Sunbeam has decided not to. Sunbeam worries about what Berryheart and her followers may do in order to prevent the other Clans from attacking ShadowClan, but Nightheart does not believe she will be able to do anything serious. He comforts her while she frets over Tigerstar's refusal to listen to opposing viewpoints on the matter. The next morning, Berryheart leads many of her Clanmates to the greenleaf Twolegplace for Nightheart's second task, where there is a Twoleg and its dog. Berryheart instructs Nightheart to steal an item from the pelt-den, a task that Tigerstar and Dovewing argue against, as it is not a typical activity for ShadowClan. However, she persists that it will prove Nightheart's stealth and speed, and assures that there is no dog present.
- Nightheart agrees to the task, and once approved by Tigerstar, he heads off toward the pelt-den. He manages to reach it undetected and finds a small Twoleg pelt inside to steal, but he is discovered by the dog, which had been inside the pelt-den. The dog attempts to take the pelt back, but it rips in half, and Nightheart flees. The Twoleg grabs the dog and Nightheart reaches the other cats, who rush back to the safety of camp. Berryheart and Whorlpelt argue that he failed because he was caught, but Nightheart says that he had completed the task of stealing something. Tigerstar agrees and passes him, telling him to take the pelt out of the camp, though Berryheart threatens that she can still get rid of Nightheart.
